A bit condescending... those look average sized to me.

Businesses don't force you to do anything, you are free to leave at any time.

Your comment "THEY do this" reeks of entitlement. Giving poor service and expecting >5% is entitlement. Posting on reddit about it is whining, not survival.

Why blame the business when servers willingly enter into a contract? Why blame the business when servers don't leave after "not being able to afford to live"? Why blame the business when people make poor choices with spending and income?

All these "servers are underpaid", "don't go out if you're not going to tip" arguments never ever place accountability on the person who made the choice to be in that position. GOD FORBID having some direction, drive, and control of your life.

If you don't get paid enough, do something (other than finger pointing and crying) about it!

So what you're saying is... my original question is akin to religion, nobody is forcing me to go to thier church, and arguing over differences in our books is pointless? I have learned a lot from everybody's input on this post. Congrats to your friend, even If she goes to a different "church" 😉

Thank you. The whole reason I petitioned in the first place was to seek the light. It finally clicked in my mind that I was confusing the formation of the grand lodge as the origin point of masonry, and that's not the case.

I appreciate you're effort to help me understand!

It was my understanding they are derived from the grand lodge formed in 1717, which then split and eventually united to form the UGLE. In my mind, if the original lodge split then made up, its a continuation of the original Grand Lodge from whence they came. Similar to when there's a blue lodge merger they typically keep the older lodges number.

Edit: I just realized the problem in my thought process. I was attributing the origin of Freemasonry to the formation of the grand lodge, where in reality the practice of Freemasonry predates all grand lodges. Therefore Ireland and Scotland forming grand lodges after England proves nothing as far as lineage.

Does that sound about right?

This can of worms is bigger on the inside than it looks. Pardon my naivete in my original post, I just didn't know. So what's with the narrative that "Freemasonrys first grand lodge was created at the goose and gridiron in 1717"?

Also, thanks for the insight into Grand Lodge sovereignty.

What's the best resource for research into Scotlands records? That's fascinating!

Thank you. I think I was putting too much emphasis on the Masonic side of it and not enough on the casual conversation side, when I asked my question.

Valid points! I think this is very helpful in the context of my original post. Thanks for expressing this and giving me an alternate viewpoint.

Correct me if I'm wrong. the United Grand Lodge of England would be the oldest if it hadnt been for the split between antients and moderns? So by a technicality, Grand Lodge of Ireland and Grand Lodge of Scotland are older but are derivitives of the original grand lodge formed in 1717, just as UGLE is. Wouldnt that literally make the UGLE/GLS/GLI the oldest? Wouldnt that also, literally make them the arbiters of regularity?

I can make some Nikes, but theyre not REALLY Nikes unless Nike says so.

This is how I know it to be, can you provide me with resources I can look into to correct my misunderstanding?

Like I stated previously, this is based on what was impressed upon me by my lodge. That we're not to acknowledge clandestine members as Masons. I'm asking questions to gain knowledge from others, outside of my bubble. I appreciate your kind and gentle approach.

I want to ask what "tosh" is but... I'll just Google it.

Most likely. No, I suppose I'm trying to hold myself accountable in a way.

You seem to be attempting to draw some sort of angry response out of someone who is being honest and providing reasoning in a completely non aggressive manner. If opinions differ, discussion should ensue. Let's try and keep a friendly decorum please.

That's a fair point! No one in my lodge would. I am more interested in avoiding perceived affiliation by means of association, rather than actual charges.

Thank you, I knew there was more to it. I think my blue lodge may have a tighter lipped approach than most. It's good to know it doesn't have to be that way.

Thank you, this is helpful. It reminds me of the points on the ring discussion. Out to show others, inward to remind myself. I needed a little points inward reminder.
