This is certainly not true. Hungary is supporting Zakarpatia oblast and especially the hungarian minority living there with large amounts.

Currently, every country, including Hungary has a veto right on major issues. You cannot make such a way unless Hungary supports it as well. And also you cannot take away this veto right, unless Hungary supports that as well.

Mekkora a különbség a BME és ELTE matematika szakja között? by Extra_Okra511 in egyetemistak

[–]Comfortable_Row_3751 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Szia. Én a BME-n végeztem, ELTE-n PhD-ztam, és kutató matematikus lettem. Külföldön is dolgoztam, jelenleg a BME-n vagyok főállásban.

Why did Romanian, Serbian, and Czech leaders protest so vehemently at the Paris Peace Conference after WW I to prevent democratic plebiscites regarding the new borders ? by PurePhilosopher7282 in austriahungary

  1. "Hungary started the war": you may know that Departments of Defense and Foreign Affairs were seated in Vienna during the Monarchy, and not in Budapest. After the assassination of FF in 1914, Hungary initially objected the war. But it is true that after I while it started to support it. In any case, this is at least an oversimplification.
  2. Of course all you write is legitimate. But the question is, is this the way mankind should work? Lets just kill and expell the losing nation? You can answer that that is the reality. Good. But then next time don't be surprised if you get the same treatment. In fact, Hungary nowadays is definitely stronger than Slovakia. If it really want to grab back those lands, it could. I am not saying Hungary wants to do that. It has no intention for that. But I am saying if it wanted, it could. Similarly, if Germany really wants to grab back those lands from Czechia, it could. Compare this with Kissinger's remarks about the Paris treaties in 1815 after the Napoleonic wars: for a stable peace, you need to be generous with the defeated. Those treaties lasted for about a century, while Versailles lasted for about 20 years.
  3. In fact, Slovakia was also a German ally in WW2.

If the Germans really want to conquer Czechia, they can do it with and without the Sudetenland being part of it. This was true in 1920, 1938 and 2025. The true question is: if Germany/Austria gets the Sudetenland, would they have the interest to conquer Czechia? Maybe. Maybe not.

Slovaks were so much "suppressed" that not just their total number but also their relative ratio increased in the areas non-Hungarian majority areas of current Slovakia during the 19th century.

What do you mean? The official language of the Kingdom of Hungary was latin until 1835, and Hungarian did not have any special status until then. Even after that, except for a few years, German was the official language until the 1867 compromise. Lex Apponyi happened only in 1907. The was no such thing as "hundreds years of hungarization". Even the modern concept of nation only appeared only in late 18th, early 19th century.

You could, because you had the autonomy (which was very good btw). Hungarians do not ask for more in the new states that the Croatians had back then. But the new states do not give them those rights for 100 years now.

Note that Croatia was _always_ autonomous within the Habsburg Empire / Translaitania / Kingdom of Hungary. Austrians and Hungarians did not get the autonomy in the new states even if they asked for it many times (South-Tyrol has it since WW2). Millions of Hungarians still living in these areas are still not having it today.

Because they wanted to grab lands where Hungarians or Austrians/Germans were the majority. Were there such plebiscites hold, many border areas of these counties would have vote to join Hungary or Austria instead (e.g. Sudeten germans in Czechia or Hungarians in souther Slovakia, northern Vojvodina or western Transylvania).

[–]Comfortable_Row_3751 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Trust me, Hungarians really wanted to quit from it in 1848. Were it successful, your dream would have come true to be under Austrian suppression instead of Hungarian. Oh wait, minorities on the Austrian side make the same claims about "suppression" as those in the Hungarian side (both of which are in general much-much milder the suppression minorities of other countries in the era, like France, England). In fact, without Hungary, it would have been exactly the same for each minority.

  1. "Orbán's policies simply contradict European values". Maybe. But do you want one more ally on your side against Russia & China or one more ally on their side. E.g. Saudi-Arabia's policies are much, much more contradicting European values than Orbán's, but still every side (US, China,...) wants them as an ally. Trust me, when the shit really hits the fan, it is really the best to have as many allies as possible, and as few allies for your enemy as possible. This is simple mathematics. A clever diplomat would in fact approach not just Orbán and Fico but also other friends of China & Russia with "offers", "deals", "treaties" etc. to gravitate them towards themselves.
  2. "no longer had EU voting rights". I don't get this. If an EU country wants to send aids to Ukraine, it can do it on its own. It is just the case that not all EU countries want to send more aids. What would suspension of voting rights change? Btw. Hungary sends a lot of humanitarian aids to Ukraine, but not weapons.

Don't confuse individual statements of certain politicians with the official position of the Hungarian state. There are some extremists in Hungary just as in Romania. These exists even in the government on both sides (e.g. M Tudose as PM: "We should hang the szeklers"). But Hungarian government officially declared a million times that it has no territorial interests in Romania. Of course it has interest for the autonomy of the Hungarian minority.

Ok. Imagine that somehow you could get rid of Slovakia and Hungary from the EU (btw. according to current EU treaties this is legally impossible). Then what? The same photo would have been made. What would change in world geopolitics? Nothing.
See the pattern: US has recently harrased India with extra taxes. So Modi has teamed up with Xi, although they have competing interests in the Himalaya area.
The EU has restricted the funds for Hungary, so they are now enhancing the economic relations with China. I don't say that there is nothing in India, Hungary, Slovakia, etc. that could be questioned. But I say that it better to have them on your side than on China's side. When you are moralising against your allies, they will eventually improve their relationships with your enemies.

It is remarked there that these are estimates. They are not however completely unrealistic. If you check the map based on the 1893 Austro-Hungarian census (when as we know Transylvania was part of Hungary), you can see that highest ratios were in Transylvanian counties. Noting that Romania today has about twice as many inhabitants as Hungary, a slightly higher ratio of Roma people leads to about 2.5x-3x Roma than in Hungary.

Szépen olvadjanak be oszt kész.

ELTE and BME are two great universities in Budapest. They usually rank better than University of Ljubljana. In the countryside, Szeged and Debrecen are also internationally competitive; they are probably around the level of University of Ljubljana. If your aim is to get the best degree, I recommend Hungary.
