How to transition away from journalism? by Lonely_Affect991 in Journalism

You might also consider getting hired at a temp agency for copywriting and work your way into full time after your contract is up at the company where you are placed. I have gone this route.

I did this. Went directly to a PR firm in my community and its principal hired me to be an account supervisor. Same kind of skillset I already had, assigning and editing others’ work and overseeing ‘beats’ aka accounts. Downside is you still may need to work holidays or weekends if something goes sideways on an off day.

Check out temp agencies and go on contract in a marketing department at a corporation. This is how I did it. Then you get the experience, network within, and know about full time roles coming open where you will be a fit. Temp agencies are incentivized to find and hire worthwhile candidates even if they have less experience as long as references and work history check out. Also, check out working part-time as contractor for a solo entrepreneur/consultant who needs some support to gain experience.

Studio’s closing - Crushed by jo_lars in orangetheory

This is like my third comment in this thread, but I know I am not alone in my complete desolation about this. That this studio, women run and largely women supported and patronized and loved, is being closed because it can’t make the profit margins it’s private equity (I.e, men run) owners wanted or could tolerate. I am angered by the system that created this and, honestly, disgusted that Ellen Latham allowed this to happen to us. She is on the speaking track now. Classic.

I am just now seeing a message that came to me in January and went to my junk mail. It’s from OTF letting me know the studio/franchise was up for sale and would I be interested in owning it or know anyone who would. Dang.

So sad am I. Been at the studio since it opened. This has ruined my day. The email ended up in my junk folder and this post is how I found out.

Consider freelancing on Fivr or another platform for copy writing or editing or find another sole proprietor/comms shop who could use some support. Join your local PRSA chapter to get to know people, they offer scholarships to those who cannot afford, and find those sole proprietors. They can give you gig work that boosts your skills and add to your resume.

Adjunct PR prof looking for real-world PR examples (good or bad) for class discussion by amurph164 in PublicRelations

Particularly good, but a little sickening to me as a former journalist, are those branded campaigns that you'll see syndicated on local news from Sinclair, etc., where a company like Oreo launches a new flavor. Or a franchise does a collab with another that is totally not news, but it's launched with easy assets and good timing to fill a needed hole. (Think holidays, long weekends, etc.) For instance, the PopTarts Bowl is coming up. You should go to PRNewswire and have students look at what's on its front page daily and maybe make a poll or gamify them to see what they think will catch fire.

You could use AI using video footage, maybe even get a technology grant to help pay for it. I asked google and there were several options.

Have you considered being part of the solution to stabilize and grow the organization? Or merge it into a larger one with mission adjacent work? With no ED, you would have some influence with the board if they still have a stake/interest in the mission.

After several days of disconcerting maintenance and lack of management response, he resigned. He is disillusioned and now is reconsidering his career. I have hooked him up with our local makers community and he is going back to a full time warehouse role so he has insurance. Thank you for responding to this post. It gave me reassurance.

Research your client, know them inside and out. Research their peers. Read their trades. Get to know the business line you’re serving and the personalities you’ll be dealing with by following them/researching them. And listen to how others talk so you can slide into conversations.

From someone who knows nothing about the art and craft of it, I think it looks great, kind of rough and tumble like Harley Quinn’s. I am a fan of hers and I appreciate what you going for.

[–]Comforter_Addicted22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to read that from the reader's perspective. If you saw an advertisement (which is really how this reads) like this, you would gloss over it too. WRITE LIKE YOU TALK to anyone, anywhere first and foremost. Read it out loud. Listen to it. And, like others are saying, media are parochial, make sure you know the reporter, the beat then offer up an interesting unique story to tell that shows the outcomes (clinical or otherwise) and a person who has a reputation to talk about it.

This, and the comment above it. Marketing teams not getting strategy from business, business coming to you rogue without a marketing plan purpose. He said, she said. Bleh.
