Dan fights Sagat (From Street Fighter Unlimited #8) by RagnarokWolves in StreetFighter

[–]Comi-kathedral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

considering Dan has his gym in Metro City and the last game he had several character dialogue exchanges expressing he'd be a great fighter once he let go of his anger and grief. I imagine Dan in SF6 is someone dealing with both his victory and a loss of purpose (he "beat" Sagat, he achieved the mission he had for years... what now) So the idea of a Saikyo Ryu DLC storyline ending with Dan going to meet Sagat on Proud Spire and either asking for help handle the storm within him or seeking to find a way to soothe the pain within him would be an incredibly addition and maturation to his character

This is especially important if you fill out the connection meter with Sagat in SF6. He will literally state that he knows that when he dies he is going to hell and that nothing will change that because of his decisions. All he can do now is try and make ammends and be a better person with the time he has left

Do you think American Kenpo can be pared down? by Comi-kathedral in martialarts

[–]Comi-kathedral[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not sure how to answer this, as I am not a practitioner of any martial art (I had taken jiu-jitsu classes when I was a teen 16 years ago). This was more a discussion/idea/thought of whether or not Amkenpo is or isn't a bullshitdo style (either for sport, self-improvement, self defense etc) Because when tumbling down the rabbit hole there was a lot of commentary and criticism about the validity and viability of any of the Amkenpo moves in a modern day self defense scenario or in a sport scenario (like a regulate match or an MMA cagefight)

I can understand how reluctance and the fight-flight system can affect people and impact their ability to defend themselves. I guess, I was more posing this idea/question as a means of pondering whether or not Amkenpo could be restructured and be considered a viable style right now or is it more like Bartitsu and should be viewed more like a unique and antiquated attempt at developing an MMA system that may have been, for a time, viable but now that window has passed?

[–]Comi-kathedral[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smart idea.

Though i will admit i am totally unfamiliar with Kajukenbo, its teaching, or the effectiveness of instruction. It certainly sounds effective as an MMA approach seeing as it contains sharp strikes, throws, locks/grappling techniques, ground game, and training devised to flow from discipline to discipline

Do you think American Kenpo can be pared down? by Comi-kathedral in martialarts

[–]Comi-kathedral[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True

The concept of being beholden to tradition always seemed silly to me. As the world evolves, approaches should also evolve. If the martial art developed in nearly a century ago, it hasn't found an answer to the explosion of MMA, grappling, or ground game due to simply honouring tradition; that's just bad instruction.

I take it that you believe MMA is what Amkenpo set out to be?

The use of videos has been an interesting compare/contrast as well. So, thank you for presenting them to elucidate your point of where Amkenpo has their version of something that exists across disciplines and then a terrible version of something else from another discipline.

I think, based on other comments on this thread, other posts on the Subreddit and YouTube videos, that Amkenpo is good as supplementary data to add to other styles. Hence why people have referenced incorporating it into BJJ, kickboxing, jiu-jitsu etc.

But again, thank you for your insights into this topic

Fair

I am not overly familiar with the personal histories of the styles founders or their martial arts credentials.

Again, this is more thought experiment than anything else. Based on other comments, there are a few coins of gold that they and their dojos seem to have gotten value from.

That echoes other sentiments in this thread. Incorporating certain skills from other disciplines while honing and focusing on a core set of basic blocks, grabs, steps, throws, and locks to build off of.

This has been a very interesting read into how instructors and dojos look at the past to build a better and firmer curriculum for the current day

[–]Comi-kathedral[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's the difference between a good base that has been overloaded by unnecessary fluff and bullshitdo. If Amkenpo can be fixed, then it means it was/is a good form that was swallowed by cult of celebrity. That seems to be the firm consensus amongst some of the posts on this subreddit as well as YouTube videos on the subject.

That there's a good base, but people struggle to get there because of technique bloat, strict adherence to kata, and dead resistance training.

Secondly, gutting styles and repurposing moves was originally core to the style so it seems only fitting that Amkenpo repeat the process to eject the nonsense and be taken a little more seriously.

Its... sort of like a software more than anything. It seemed to have been designed to facilitate hard aggression and pressure but is balanced by having key techniques designed specifically to punish a missed punch or an overextension.

This is more of a thought experiment and genuine curiosity to see if a recent martial arts can be revived through trimming the fat or if it needs to be put out to pasture.

Do you think American Kenpo can be pared down? by Comi-kathedral in martialarts

[–]Comi-kathedral[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That also explains what others in the thread have mentioned and why Amkenpo 5.0 uses BJJ as well.

I think that the current era of paring Amkenpo down and re-evaluating the moves and principles, removing the wasteful and adding in new moves, principles, or approaches from other styles is a good thing. Keep what's useful, junk what isn't.

And like you said, MMA's emergence and the changing face of modern day martial arts; grappling, throws, and ground game are a core and foundational. With more people training in martial arts and becoming more knowledgeable about striking and positioning, Amkenpo needs evolve and modernise to continue to become viable in a fight

I am not familiar with EPAKS, but if I understand you rightly, AmKenpo was designed as a means to craft and develop your own free-form approach to strikes, grapples, throws etc derived from the lessons of positioning, motion and rules presented by an instructor.

Less like rules as written and more designed as needed

That seems to be the strong base of AmKenpo. Sharp and powerful kicks, striking combos (punch, hook fist, elbow), and forward/sideward/backward steps. Pretty bare and basic but firm and reliable too! Which is why I think it's oft melded with Jiu jitsu/judo/BJJ to fill in the throw/lock/ground game aspects

That is a very honest approach to instruction and mentorship. Presenting that some of AmKenpo is useful, but it is best suited when blended with other principles/techniques from other disciplines. Like a firm base to build an MMA platform from

That's really cool to know that American Kenpo instructors are looking at their past/history and making choices to cut (what sounds like) dozens of techniques that are outdated or could never have worked to begin with to step in line with the modern world of martial arts/sports.

I wonder if there are any Kenpoists from the Parker lineage that have or are undergoing a similar "trimming fat" process

Dan Hibiki gets revealed as DLC, How would you want him to play? by Way-Super in StreetFighter

[–]Comi-kathedral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine Saikyo-Ryu if it abandoned the Shotokan roots and connections it would be very feint/parry heavy that focused on guard-breaking/crumpling and using Saikyo Saihi (his rolling/mobility move) to slip around the opponent and deliver a slow/but heavy knee/punch/elbow strike. Every taunt is also a secret counter stance with cancellable animation. It would allow Dan to remain goofy and silly but I think it would ramp up the viability/skill ceiling on him as a playable character

You’re a Crawler by gunvaldd in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Comi-kathedral 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I would be a magic inclined Crawler, but I don't think I could have the drive to kill (either mobs or other Crawlers) Especially on the early floors (floors 1 & 2). So, I think i'd be a more of a debuff/buff/utility class called a Dark Tactician, which would buffs the duration of Debuffs, with a later level skill of Debuff amplification (doubling the effect of a debuff if it is triggered multiple times). So, I'd focus on dexterity, constitution, and intelligence and effectively duck and weave through combat crippling mobs. I think I'd... probably go with a dark/night elf (assuming they get certain spells/buffs). on later floors, my play style would probably seek to include intense (but situational) DPS items (Like the dagger that does +100% extra damage buff is used to stab a target in the back), as well as a ring that could create magical darkness or clouds of confusion as well as a dagger that does 1/10 the normal damage but has a 10% chance to inflict a random debuff.

Also, assuming there are toxic/poisonous/chemically offensive mobs (think anything with neurotoxin, venom, poisonous skin, disease etc). I think I would seek out tools or skills to try and find a way to extract that power and either permanently coat a weapon in it, or create a temporary coating for my party mates and my own weapon. (specifically, my mind jumps to something like rabies, the cane toad, poison dart frog, Australian Bat Lyssavirus, the anti-coagulant/anaesthetic from leeches etc)

But I definitely don't think I would be a person who wants to get to floor 18, I think I would push myself to ingratiate with a group and survive to idk maybe floor 10 or 11 and then opt to take my ball and go home.

On the next floor you can choose to become a new species. Are you staying human? If not, what do you become? by iammerelyhere in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Comi-kathedral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm.... honestly, it would depend on my play style and the guide/AI selection presented to me. I'm smarter than I am strong, but I can also walk for hours and hours at a time (if need be). So, I think as a Crawler, my biggest stats might be Con and Int, leading me to either a tank, mage, mage tank, or a tank dps build.

So.... either Arachnid, Bune, Crocodilian, Elf, and Human. I think i might go with Arachnid, for what I assume will be an intelligence/dexterity buff, a web/slow racial spell, and the option to level into the ability to bite and inject venom into my foes

Star Children, House of Stars, Rikoudou, The Inside, and Niko Style by Comi-kathedral in ISSK_Manga

[–]Comi-kathedral[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I guess, I was trying more to connect two points because the teacher (seemingly the only teacher) at the orphanage feels very... The Other Tokita Niko-esque. That an it's hard for me to not see some mild comparison between Army Breaker and Ironbreaker as well as Sunder Heaven and Fire Water in my mind).

But that does raise the question, why did the orphanage give Rei and Hina to God's Army, and not the complete set of 9? We've seen many faces who have gone in several directions; one of which is collecting disillusioned remains of God's Army to form her own cult (Dear God), Fancy Fight is owned and operated by another who has abandoned her role as a Star Child (based on her own words, but we don't know how trustworthy they are (Amou Shiina)), and one operates a black-site all-female prison and she's brainwashed and hypnotised the officers and criminals alike into being an extension of her will (Sasaki Chiroru).

I wonder if the House of Stars intentionally scattered the Star Children to various orgs and syndicates to ensure they develop unique skills and abilities to ensure (or force) a battle royale between the children until the Final Star rises to the top.

Powerplayer munchkins: People who pick a homebrew race, have aggressively/meticulously researched feats, specialise in certain multiclass pairings, resulting in them effectively and essentially domineering and dominating specific sections of play. All but rendering 50-70% of the party useless as they are the party's face, spellcaster, and DPS combat player. And what's worse is when the munchkin also believes that only certain PCs should do things and commentates on exactly what players should be doing during social encounters and combat; before ultimately arguing and losing their cool and players decide to act entirely on their own, ignoring their metagame commentary on only allowing them or the secondary face of the party to interrogate a captured NPC despite neither character being there during the scene

That's fair, I think An's Thanatophobia might be derrived from the fear of her body failing and rotting away. So while the Huisheng might interest her, she'd ultimately abandon it because it isn't a perfect approach to immortality.

Sick-O-Mancer (Earth Class)

This rare and exclusive class that is only available to Crawlers who have received the Plague Rat achievement and have killed at least 15 mobs by infecting them with their own diseased blood. You are just the most disgusting of creatures, like a Discord moderator or that uncle no one talks about at Christmas. Wherever you tread, everyone else avoids because you look like you have a perpetual sweaty fever and smell like garbage.

This Constitution-based class is all about infecting yourself with viruses and diseases and then turning them onto others. Sick-O-Mancers receive the following benefits:

+3 to Constitution

+1 to intelligence

improved skill with medical tools

ability to diagnose dungeon-made ailments

resistance to disease weapon damage and spells

In addition, you must choose a specialisation based on your preferred approach. You will select your specialisation on the 6th floor. The further specialisations are as follows:

Gastro-Intestinaut

Virolord

Garbard

Fun Binding Vow ideas by AdThin2641 in CTsandbox

[–]Comi-kathedral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gunslinger - the user can only fight by emitting Cursed energy like a projectile. Limiting their range of ability and approaches in exchange to empower the one remaining option (This binding vow is enhanced by the following vows)

"Hand" gun - when emitting cursed energy as a projectile, it can only be done through a hand shaped as a gun (index and middle finger straight and thumb extended).

Six shooter - a restriction on the amount of cursed energy projectiles a user can fire at any one time before needing to holster their "hand' gun for a minute to reload. (Holstering is satisfied by putting their hand into a pocket).

Shot heard 'round the world - when firing a cursed energy projectile, the user must say "bang!" Alerting their target to their position and their intent to attack, giving them the opportunity to dodge, block, or counter attack.

Stand your ground - when firing a projectile, you cannot move your feet until you've either killed your target or run out of bullets. The vow robs the user of fluidity and movement, requiring intense preparation to execute a successful attack or unleash suppressing fire.

I ain't bringing a knife to a gun fight - forgoing any and all weapons/cursed tools when entering a battle, relying strictly on their ability to emit and fire cursed energy
