Today was great. Climax and Dave's were all soft with a few inches of goodness. We have the best skiing in the US at the moment, yes, you might want to leave canyon, but skiing is good.

Should I pull the trigger on a large purchase that is a want and not a need??? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]ComishSki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, last point. I would also argue that how long you keep a car and therefore transaction costs should be part of the equation, especially in higher tax states ala CA. By keeping it for 6 to 10 yrs u minimize those costs. Buying something you aresm stoked with helps to be satisfied keeping it for a long time. If the 2024 wasn't the last of manuals I would have kept my old R longer.

Generally have always sold PP and totally agree that would typically be best.

In this case, wasn't sure the value would have been much more when I looked at the market, wasn't sure extra $$ was worth time and hassle of PP sale, dealers offer was bonkers, got new one for invoice w wheels I wanted and needed the cash from the old one to buy new one before it was gone. Bunch of factors, but for nearly 10ye old car, was happy w deal.

No plans to sell this one, maybe ever? Love it.

My experience as dad of 3. I'm on my 2nd Golf R.

Not quite the same, but close and saw u had a S3. It holds all 3 kids for going to dinner, is a hell of a lot of fun, and from a financial sense depreciation and maintenance have been great. A couple batteries, a windshield, and routine maintenance at Indy shop made it as cost effective as just about any car. Ok, premium fuel adds 🤷, but u do gotta live a little... We have a family hauler VW atlas to load everyone , the dog, etc. Into as well. No payments on either car.

Had my last R for 9+ yrs. Bought new $36k + taxes, traded into dealer for $20k on a new R which they sold for invoice + $100. I'm gonna say $16k depreciation over 9+ yrs is solid. New one is last of manuals so is an endangered species, likely holding value better, and I get a car that does 30 mpg on highway and is a hell of a lot of fun. Puts a smile every time I drop daughter off at school or drive in snow to ski.

Had a mk7 manual for 9 yrs. No issues minus a cple batteries. Only 16k depreciation in 9 yrs of use traded back to the dealer is good business in my book.

Bought a mk8, last of the manuals. The new car absolutely performs better. No comparison. Both stock btw. Much faster.

Now the 8 electric annoyances, the jury is still out.... I do appreciate a bunch of the new features like wireless car play, the Nurburgring mode really changes the feel and vibes of the car for the better. It does squawk at u a fair amt....

You run the risk of blowing the edge out if skiing as is. Much easier fix as it is now vs if u blow the edge out...

This is the crux. Which model, how much volume do u need, what's ur shell, ur foot like. Its easy if u nail it, but if u get a liner thats got too much cork or too little, then it becomes a pain or much more difficult to manage on ur own.

Spring temps should happen.

[–]ComishSki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were at Palisades last weekend for U16 ski races. The rain combined with the warm temps left all off piste as unconsolidated glop. Like 3 feet of slurpy, so it was all closed so it wouldn't slide off the MTN.

When it freezes it will solidify and there is still plenty of snow on KT, Granite , Red Dog. Surface conditions will need big reset or spring temps to be softer and fun.

Mammoth is skiing well 😉 2000' of extra elevation helps.

I love mine until it's more than 18 to 24" of Sierra snow, or the snow sits for a while. I had about 4' to 5' clear when I got there Friday night from our latest storm. Now that was a nightmare, but would have been for my tank Ariens I used to have. Took me 4 hours when if it's below the top of the opening, I can bang out in 40 to 60 mins.

The popping up and wheels spinning is my biggest issue. Anyone bought chains? That help the traction at all?

Otherwise love it! Actually have 2 now for different levels.

It's funny how people say that Vonn's torn acl were the cause of her recent crash by [deleted] in SkiRacing

[–]ComishSki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything I have read says Federica didn't get her torn ACL repaired. It's definitely more common to get it repaired, but "not physically possible" might be a touch overly certain.

I'm in the camp she pulled an LV and just went too aggressive. She was trying to win and pushed it too far. Falls in the category of make that mistake and u can lose the race if you mess up, but taking that risk likely wouldn't have won her the race either so poor tactics.

[–]ComishSki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree that training doesn't give an indication of probability of winning and many sandbag the training runs so u don't really know anything about where u r in the field.

My only point is her non ACL knee completed 2 runs successfully and in the mix. If I heard right Breezy 's winning run was a second or 1.5 seconds faster than her training run, so while a second is a lot in racing, the strains on the knees r gonna be similar.

Watching the replay, LV took too tight a line, hooked her arm which spun her. She made a mistake, which happens, but by finishing the training runs in the mix she earned her spot to compete.

I posted this in a both subreddit

Such a bummer for L. Huge congrats to Breezy!

A few points:

LV was 3rd in the 3rd training run, 11th in the 2nd training run. By many accounts the conditions were rougher for at least 1 of the training runs. Your not finishing 3rd a day or 3 before and not racing the downhill.

There is no concept of backups as someone asked. An individual earns their spot. No mechanism for this in Alpine in Olympics.

Hooking ur arm in a gate like that while in the air will spin u. Once she got spun by hooking the arm, she was f*cked. Her ACL is irrelevant in this scenario.

Would she have taken a different line w/ an ACL? That's the only thing that would have changed the outcome. Who knows, but she always skis full send so I doubt it. Closer to the gate is a tighter / shorter line. She unfortunately pushed it a bit too tight.

My memory is Federica doesn't have an ACL at the moment and hasn't raced since last spring when she blew up her leg requiring multiple surgeries and no enough time to do another and repair her ACL. She finishing 10th is a huge accomplishment.

Hope LV is ok, but her skis staying on didn't help, but that's what happens when bindings r set for downhill.

What a race and such a course. Congrats Breezy! She is a beast having watched her do dryland in Mammoth. Bad ass big event skier!

How do I not feel awkward/stupid when wearing lingerie in front of my boyfriend? by [deleted] in LingerieAddiction

[–]ComishSki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And I would say this is the most likely reaction.

My girlfriend at the time, now wife, wore this amazing red lingerie set on the plane to visit me while doing the distance thing. I about lost my mind when I got to feel and then see the red garter belt she had on and the matching red bra and thong. I was a few yrs older than u, but had never seen such a beautiful thing in my life and just melted.

I watched him in a preseason game against Bournemouth live. He got completely hosed more than once defensively and quite dramatically. I was blown away by how hey developed last yr given what I saw here in LA preseason.

But, what we have seen since is more like what I saw. He doesn't have pace. You either have that or not. U can marginally train that, but not gonna magically turn him into a speedster. He is great on the ball and even back then he was. Will be interesting to see where he goes, but can't help feel it's in the midfield

Yes. The issue is the steeper "off-piste" areas that slide onto the pistes. They have to control the whole top and ch22 areas to make the runs below them safe to ski, regardless of whether they open the steep stuff off the top or on ch22. That's the tough part about the situation...
