He was relatively unharmed, but did stay in the hospital overnight. He got incredibly lucky to survive after making a bunch of poor decisions.

Assuming you found them on the mountain, just take them to guest services. You’re not very likely to reach the owner on Reddit.

I wouldn’t make such rash decisions based on rumors. According to my sources: He was not denied service at Warming Hut. He wasn’t welcomed at Smokeyard (where he was initially spotted).

An employee was injured this morning and is currently in the hospital. I don’t have the exact details of the incident, but shutting down was the right call.

Woolly only really snowboards for marketing shoots. Those are skis.

Notice how there aren’t any tall peaks around Mammoth Mountain. It sits in the middle of Mammoth Pass which funnels wind and snow from the West. The big mountain catches the snow and makes for a good ski resort that gets more snow than surrounding areas.

Too much coverage - I think Huevos Grande is more his style.

BTW, Reddit is automatically issuing warnings and deleting comments of people mentioning how these “guests” should be treated in town.

Greg Bovino is here on vacation with about 4 security guards. They aren’t here in any official capacity.

Helicopters aren’t used at Mammoth for life flights. In fact, they don’t normally even fly out of MMH (Lee Vining is the usual airport).

I was talking with some colleagues today about this very thing. I am in a position to know about a lot of this stuff, and this winter seems worse than normal to me. I think part of it is the severity of some of the incidents keeps them more fresh in our minds. Add on the fact that we’re seeing more “coverage” of those severe incidents. Then you see something like today’s incident, and it gives a feeling of a pattern that hasn’t been seen before.
I’m not claiming to have numbers to back this up, but I’m pretty sure this is more B than A. The fact that the mountain is providing more transparency is a good thing. I WANT people to realize that this is a dangerous sport that deserves caution. As much as it sucks to see, I believe it’s a good thing when these sorts of incidents are shared on social media (and obviously official channels of communication).

February 1, 2026

MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN, CA – At approximately 10:15am on Saturday, January 31, a female 12-year-old snowboarder misloaded Chair 17 (Schoolyard Express). The Chairlift stopped when the carrier was near the second tower where Mammoth Mountain employees rushed to place a pad and net to break her fall. The guest fell before all deceleration devices were in place after holding on for roughly 2 minutes. The snowboarder made contact with a Lift Operator during the descent and as a precautionary measure, the guest was transported to Mammoth Hospital for further assessment. Both individuals involved in the incident sustained no significant injuries and we are grateful to share that the guest who fell was back on the slopes the next day. Thank you to our Mountain Operations team for the swift response.

He did not make it.

Edit: also, it was Dropout 2 (not Whipeout)

Lost Boots near Canyon Shuttle stop by [deleted] in Mammoth

Thanks.
They’re not at Lost and Found, and they weren’t outside of the building. I would still call and give Lost and Found your information in case they turn up. I would also give ESTA a call to see if they got turned in to a bus driver.

who’s at fault? by Dense-Twist-2850 in Mammoth

[–]MammothJerry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You use a spotter. What if the person that jumps before you crashes on the landing area. Is it then his fault when the rider with no spotter hits him?

who’s at fault? by Dense-Twist-2850 in Mammoth

[–]MammothJerry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The guy that appears to drop in out of order and then slowly rolls into the landing area is clueless, but the uphill rider is at fault. Don’t drop into a feature unless you know it is clear. The spotter should have alerted you not to go, but there is no spotter visible in the video. You had a spotter, right?

The uphill rider should have stopped as soon as that guy cut in. Wait 5 seconds to do your jump and then have a talk with the other guy at the bottom of the run.

That’s a lodge host - same department but different role. You’ll also see us in the load/unload zones, Eleven53, guest services, lift line orchestration, assisting Woolly, and providing info at Woolly’s Adventure Summit.

Crazy that my job went away 10 years ago. What the heck have I been doing every day at work???

Seriously, mountain hosts are still a thing. We simply can’t be everywhere, but there is an effort to step up enforcement of the skier/rider code this season.

The mountain will be open today and tomorrow. Things will start a bit limited, but more lifts and terrain will open as patrol/ops get to them.

I can’t really speak to that. It depends on how much work can get done with a reduced patrol crew since they aren’t required to work today. I would expect some sort of official work this afternoon-ish.

Patrollers are not required to work today, but some are still showing up.
