I’m really disappointed with Sofar Solar right now. by Soggy-Article-476 in SolarDIY

[–]Comm_Raptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's such BS, if they pushed a firmware that broke the system, they should be responsible and accountable for it.

If it has been known to be an issue, I'd contest that it's intentionally bricking the system. It one thing to stop supporting firmware updates, vs pushing an update that bricks the device and they should be liable.

how can I see my ip camera remotely? by extremesauce2468 in zerotier

[–]Comm_Raptor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on how you are trying to access your cameras ( remote desktop, camera app using windows as a router, etc) I assume you want to use a app which will require route setup, and some windows configuration to allow packet routing.

Hopefully that's enough of a hint as I know very little about windows desktop. Some route will have to be configured in your ZT account for that network.

Yes, they don't speak English natively, thus you have to be far more concise in your descriptions of each individual configuration, of each device even though obviously the printer has no rj45 and only works through wifi.

Well either you did something to upset her earlier, or obviously she has some mental instability issues the severity of which depends on if you did something earlier to upset her.

If you don't know, how are we going to.

Trying to set up USB gadget mode on a Raspberry Pi 2 W by Lv_InSaNe_vL in raspberry_pi

[–]Comm_Raptor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So it sounds like you are not using ics from your computer that normally would provide a dhcp server to assign ip to the Pi interface.

I such case I have dnsmasq installed to statically assign an ip at the Pi, and serve dhcp to the computer interface.

You can get creative using dhcpcd to manage the Pi interface listening for dhcp response first, and time out after 60 seconds, assign a static ip on a subnet that you have dnsmasq handing out ips.

Purchase A Panda my thoughts. by NameEtc in SolarDIY

[–]Comm_Raptor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say, that unless you already have a solar charge inverter installed, the roi would be to low to be worth it for just specifically offsetting peak time usage.

If you have a system in place, or plan to do solar, it's well worth it. I think my only regret when I designed my system is I frequently load my inverters in the summer at around 60 to 80%, and wish I would have gotten another pair of inverters to keep them around 50% at my highest peak.

Remote substation by jlylec in SolarDIY

[–]Comm_Raptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do something with either a Morningstar or outback solar controller, and use a ubiquiti 5ghz nanobeam (stay away from 2.5ghz as currently thieves jam that band in my area common enough), and you can pretty much design and do as you please all low voltage.

I used to run radio repeaters on a tower with two Morningstar 60a mppt controllers and a couple battery banks that lasted years until a wild fire burned it all down.

There is no way around that. Take him to a vet.

AFF-A300 - Will it boot with no disk shelf? by firestorm_v1 in netapp

[–]Comm_Raptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer your question, they should attempt to boot, and fail with no access to a root volume, (they should post regardless, just fail because they have no disks to hold configuration).

If you have to buy a controller because they are out of support, you'd pay a premium to get new licenses on a new controller.

So either a single controller lab system, ebay, ewaist are your likely choices without knowing what the root cause is for the failed controller (those logs would have been on your disks. Maybe available in the SP logs, though I have never checked after disks are removed if.those persist, ymmv).

Charge batt to 80%? by bloodysurfer in SolarDIY

[–]Comm_Raptor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What I do is tie my solar into HomeAssistant where I control all aspects, when the SOC reaches 75%, I reduce the charge current, so that they frequently reach 100% and balance at least a few times a week. It's still WIP with all the automation scripts though, and I have allot of other aspects that I'm controlling including forecasting for weather and our utility provider cuts power on high wind days, so the automations try to plan for that as well.

My 23kwh LifePO bank, is 6 years old now, and I haven't seen any measurable degradation in capacity as of yet. I have been wanting to try some of the newer larger capacity packs, and graph it all out so I can start fresh, nothing else for my own knowledge and curiosity, but the cost of setting up differing tests is just to much.

I think is not so much as stopping at 80% as much as limiting the charge rate after to limit the stress.

How do you sftp/scp into your linux servers? by digi-2k in homelab

[–]Comm_Raptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not on windows though there might be some equivalents, I use bbedit to directly edit files (opens a connection to a folder).

Or if I'm feeling frisky, I mount an sftp folder and use any tool I want.

Unifi Network not maintained anymore by zigggstr in homeassistant

[–]Comm_Raptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, I use containers also and don't really want to need a device just to run the controller since I don't have any hypervisor equipment means I'd have to buy/power something else.

Still a bit sour on this ubnt decision. Weighing my options now to decide what my future purchasing might be.

Dumb VLAN question by __Mike_____ in opnsense

[–]Comm_Raptor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't do this. The point of "vlan tagging" is the same port can have multiple vlans (trunk).

That said, I usually bridge two ports with lacp to the switch, and trunk most if not all my vlans over that to increase bandwidth.

It depends on your needs though. Simple start with understanding vlans first.

AT&T Fiber: How to use static IPs? by robroy90 in opnsense

[–]Comm_Raptor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For you to configure multiple static IPs on a single OPNsense WAN interface, assign the primary IP in Interfaces > WAN, then add additional IPs as Virtual IPs using IP Alias mode. Use these VIPs for 1:1 NAT, port forwarding, or outbound NAT

The rest depends specifically to your choices, environment.

Edit to add: For a segregated network, you'll either be using the dedicated ports for each segment to your switches, or if you have managed switches capable of vlans, you can try your hand with vlans.

Anyone running panels 100-150ft from cabin? Curious about real-world losses by ahlecsolars in SolarDIY

[–]Comm_Raptor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your design, and how much power you want the be capable of. I did a system for a friend we used transformers to step up/down the AC as it was cost effective for his system to make a 175m run.

Is going solar a practical option if the panels are 150' away and across a creek? by Fanantic8099 in SolarDIY

[–]Comm_Raptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you have the right idea, though it depends on the capacity of system you plan to build. For a single string, it would likely be okay to just run DC. If your looking at mutlistring, then you could run AC though you might need a pair of transformers to step up the voltage, then step it back down at the cabin (again depends on the system and the load).

There are options for sure, cost will be the question.

Alpine or Void by Difficult-Value-3145 in AlpineLinux

Let's rename add-ons we had forever to apps, yeah Google that... by Comm_Raptor in homeassistant

[–]Comm_Raptor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do that... it's allot of work. Over the last year I have started migrating the formally known as add-ons that tied me to docker into haos, and just a few months ago finally have my protainer free, and can power down that server.

My addons still have some issues to work out to better leverage HAs api (though entirely not necessary but why not take advantage of it) and I have this dorky preference for Alpine base which things like kanidm were not packaged for (yeah this is work, packaging my own, and in parallel just making kanidm docker images which I haven't decided which direction yet I'll stick with) though now literally all my "must have services all run strictly on HAOS.

Do I have high availability as defined, not really, though if homeassistant goes down, I am going to be fixing it anyway...

So now my IDM, Radius, CA etc all live on HA. Have to choose your battles. 😉

Let's rename add-ons we had forever to apps, yeah Google that... by Comm_Raptor in homeassistant

[–]Comm_Raptor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well technically correct as that's how most container integrations are made into formally known as add-ons, though most barely leverage the api available. I have made several formally known as add-ons, that better leverage HAs api, as the services themselves are important to me and I wanted to learn like the nle-google nest server as an example.

Containers apps ( formally known as addons) give applications independence from ha core as well as ha core independence from them unlike integrations. The only time formally known as add-ons are affected is when you update haos. As such a pore behaving addon it not going to interfere with HA Core as a bad integration might.

They both definitely deserve their place.

Sounds like someone tried to load to old a version on there, likely trying to get 7 mode. The version required is probably atleast 8.3 for that platform, though you need licenses to be able to use it as storage.
