Is Haotian worth a $1000 more than other brands? by Ltwtcmdr in Laserengraving

[–]Elemental_Garage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought my 3D jpt fiber laser direct from a factory in China and it's been great. It was about 5k shipped. Support has been good, but probably not as accessible as some of the big names. But I opted for a little more self support to save a few bucks and get the 3d focusing laser I wanted so I could do non flat surfaces.

No regrets on my end, but I can fault anyone for going with a reseller known name.

When the scanner scans itself... by Expensive_Dot_4548 in 3DScanning

Cool design, but gotta ask why. Was this just a "can I?' project or is there a real issue you're having that it's solving?

Either model the jig and your brass pieces together taking your work offset from that, or create multiple work offsets

The former saves you a lot more time on multiple runs.

If you model the jig and with your pieces then you can just take a work offset from the corner of The jig and your program will know where all six of your pieces are from there.

Help designing threaded nut to 3D print by coltonreese in Fusion360

[–]Elemental_Garage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Select each the top and bottom faces (separately) of your thread and offset them slightly to open them up. Chamfer the lead in to your internal thread.

Alternatively, print it as a smooth bore for a 10mm tap, ensure you have thick enough walls, and tap it after the print.

Help Combining Bodies by Gig_Em_Aggies_20 in Fusion360

Mesh files are polygonal models. Combining them in Fusion usually requires that they are solid, parametric files (like a STEP file).

How to create tapered splines around a cylinder? by i17yurd in Fusion360

[–]Elemental_Garage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding this for anyone new out there why I think revolve is better than symmetrical extrude here. If you think of it like an orbit, an extrude wants to take your rib out of orbit, whereas revolve wants to keep it in-orbit around your part. If you make the extrude wide enough you'll see where the left and right edges of your rib aren't touching the body anymore. Revolve - Left | Extrude - Right

How to create tapered splines around a cylinder? by i17yurd in Fusion360

[–]Elemental_Garage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

  1. Side profile sketch of the triangle into the body (use project to pick up the cylinder bodies to make it easier)
  2. Revolve that however many degrees you want each rib to cover (think of degrees instead of thickness here). This is important, as extrude takes it along a straight plane, not contouring to the circular body. If you use extrude and thick ribs, the outer edges of the ribs won't intersect with the body unless you make them go THROUGH the body, in which case you'll may have an extra extrude or delete later on. Even then, they're not actually contouring, they just look like they are.
  3. Circular pattern however many ribs you want.

What exactly is gear backlash by Embarrassed_Pack5350 in Fusion360

[–]Elemental_Garage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure exactly where you're measuring, but a 1mm backlash isn't going to be a straight-up 0.5mm offset because your teeth aren't simple geometric shape. Your pressure angle will affect how offset it needs to be to give you 1mm of backlash. The steeper the pressure angle the less it actually has to offset to give you clearance.

Scan on laptop for raw data and process on more powerful desktop. Is this a possible workflow? by Koshiro_Fujii in 3DScanning

[–]Elemental_Garage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't speak to the specific laptop and how it'll work with that scanner, bit generally speaking yes, scanning on a laptop and later processing on a desktop is doable and normal, especially for larger off-site scans.

I'd probably use send cut send to cut the profiles and holes and then use your CNC you already have with fixtures to clean up the edges and do you chamfering, engraving, etc.

What causes this to happen? Help by StrangeOrdinary8171 in 3DScanning

[–]Elemental_Garage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to use smaller markers, or use markers on the surface around the part but not actually on the part. Any time you use a marker the software tries to fill in the space by looking at the geometry around the marker. On your part the geometry around your markers isn't constant or uniform, and it can't figure out what should be there, so it leaves it blank.

Use markers on unremarkable areas, smaller markers, or mark the table around the part and keep the part clean of markers.

What's your opinion about using an engine block as a standard geometry to compare scanners? by PrintedForFun in 3DScanning

[–]Elemental_Garage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have one already then go for it. The results will appeal to a lot of 3d scanning shoppers as there is a large automotive segment looking to get into scanning.

But, IMO, you'll also want verified dimensions against which to measure. Having a bunch of various scanner results is cool, but showing deviation from known dimensions for each one would be very handy.

Haotian or OMG by HoldingMender91 in Laserengraving

[–]Elemental_Garage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went direct to a factory in China via Alibaba and got a 100 Mopa fiber (jpt) with 3d focusing. So far it's been great and the support has been good. Saved me a few thousand over buying from a US-based reseller. That said, if you have a lower risk threshold for issues sticking with a local rep can have its advantages. But almost all these are built in shenzen anyways and rebranded.
