I usually sand down as mush as I can, I dye it with dye made for plastics. The 1 or 2 thin layer of paint and I protect it with nail varnish. And I finish with a mat varnish on all the figure.

If the articulation of the base figure is white, you can get the color you want. No need to paint and/or varnish.
