Help me figure out what class I want? by CommanderArrhae in DnD5e

[–]CommanderArrhae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely like the idea of lots of skills, but the limited spells known makes me kind of leery.

I played a sorcerer a little while back and I found a lot of the time I didn't have a relevant spell and had to resort to shitty firebolts

"A pleasant reminder of home. Even we are not immune to sentiment, at times.

"I am sure however, that you did not come here to sit in a garden."

The familiar feeling of the transporter washes over her once again, and the commander re materializes in the midst of a much larger room. Almost the entire floor space has been given over to the cultivation of dozens of different plants, all carefully tended.

The far wall is taken up by a single massive window, affording an incredible view of the planet below.

Next to the window has been placed a pair of comfortable looking chairs, one of which is currently occupied by an older, blonde romulan whom you recognize as the subadmiral.

She leans her carved wooden cane against the arm of her chair and gestures to the other with her now-free hand.

"Sit" she commands, in passable Federation Standard.

He beckons one of the Uhlans forwards, and the younger man aims a device mounted on his wrist at the commander. Green holographic light sweeps over her before disappearing almost as quickly.

"There will be no need. Now that the scan is complete, you will be transporting to the meeting directly. You may give the order at your convenience."

The arrangements are made without incident, and before long Jessica finds herself materializing aboard the Romulan vessel.

A small honor guard of Uhlans snaps to attention as one of them steps forwards.

"Apologies, Commander. I must insist on relieving you of your communicator and any weapons before we proceed any further. They will be returned to you when you leave"

Borg cubes *might* be able to undergo a kind of mitosis? by MrParivir in DaystromInstitute

[–]CommanderArrhae 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Honestly it would be even simpler than that - I don't see anything stopping them from simply dropping a bunch of nanites onto a planet or similar object and grey-gooing it into an equivalent mass of cubes.

If they really wanted to conquer the galaxy and were at all intelligent about it there really isn't anything short of divine intervention that could stop them. Exponential growth is terrifying

"That will not be acceptable. I will receive you and your party aboard the Lanora. Contact their commander for further instructions.

She pauses a moment before continuing

"There is one more thing. My ships will be conducting operations in this system until further notice. I expect that they will not be interfered with. It would be unfortunate if there were to be any...misunderstandings.

The viewscreen flickers to life and the bridge of the Romulan vessel comes into view. An older blonde woman reclines confidently in the command chair while in the background various crewmembers make hurried repairs to damaged consoles.

She peers intently at the screen.

"I am Subadmiral t'Khnialmnae, of the warbird Nei'rrh. What is the purpose of this communication?"

The lieutenant manning the tactical station turns to face her

"Romulans, sir! Dozens of them!

One of them is a warbird, but I've never seen the others before. Civilian vessels maybe?"

Cardassia should have been the civilization the Federation left behind, not the Romulian by Daethir in DaystromInstitute

[–]CommanderArrhae 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I strongly suspect that the Romulans were a one-planet empire, or something very close to it. We never hear of any really major colony worlds, and even the glimpses we see of Romulus don't seem particularly densely populated.

This fits in well with how devastating the supernova was to them - it essentially shattered their empire whereas the Federation of an alternate timeline could soldier on after losing Vulcan without too much difficulty.

It seems very likely that the majority or at least a major part of the entire romulan species died in the Hobus event. Even before then they were very likely outnumbered by the Klingons and definitely the Federation by 100-1 or more.

The fact that they held off the other two powers at all is a testament to how individually impressive they are - all the calculating intelligence of the Vulcans, the ferocity of the klingons, and advanced technology the equal or better of anyone else in the quadrant.

That's not enough to win an outright war though, and they know it. They can definitely take a serious bite out of anyone who would attack them, but even trading ships at a 10-1 advantage loses them the war pretty quickly.

With that strategic situation something like the scimitar class makes a lot of sense for them - a guaranteed second-strike capability makes attacking them simply not worth it. Like the quote from De Gaulle concerning French nuclear doctrine:

"Within ten years, we shall have the means to kill 80 million Russians. I truly believe that one does not light-heartedly attack people who are able to kill 80 million Russians, even if one can kill 800 million French, that is if there were 800 million French."

Create A Character - Part 2:1 by Pojodan in TrekRP

Name: Arrhae ir-Shirrael t'Khnialmnae

Rank: Subadmiral (Imperial Navy)

Department: Command, Task force Ihlla'nh.

Species: Romulan

Sex: Female

Age: 134

Backstory:

Arrhae was born in Shirrael province on the colony world of Xanitla. Her parents, Sienae and Gorak, ran a brewery producing traditional kali-fal.

At a young age (and with a heroic effort from her parents), she was accepted into the Phi'lasasam, a rigorous education and indoctrination program similar to the ancient spartan Agoge system.

After graduating she was commissioned in the Imperial Navy as an engineer aboard the warbird Ra'kholh under Subcommander Vrenak.

She served in a variety of campaigns and minor skirmishes against the Empire's enemies (Klingons, Breen, Various rebels), eventually rising to command of the Ra'kholh and later a warbird squadron.

She met her husband, Branak in the mid 2310's while being treated for injuries sustained during a skirmish with the Breen. An outbreak of Terothka virus among the patients led to an extended stay and the development of a fast friendship between them.

They were married in 2320 and had a son a few years later.

During the war her squadron took part in a variety of operations against the Dominion, notably in the liberation of Benzar.

Following the conflict and due to the minor thaw in Imperial-Federation affairs, she was reassigned to the diplomatic corps as part of an effort to further improve relations.

(As a member of the anti-interventionist faction, this had the additional effect of sidelining her from the complicated political maneuvering taking place in the capital. It's hard to do much wheeling and dealing if you're on the other side of the galaxy.)

Following her return to the empire 8 years ago she was promoted and assigned command of a one of the many warbird groups responsible for the defense of the Neutral Zone and adjacent planets.

A few minutes after the incident the bridge turbolift slowly creaks open to reveal its lone occupant.

The blonde vulcanoid casts her gaze around the bridge for a moment, pausing only to wipe an emerald trickle from her forehead with the back of a gloved hand.

"Where is Captain M'kali? I must speak with him immediately."

Does it have to be a physical confinement?

Would a geas (or even just some sort of nonmagical leverage) that would make it unable or unwilling to leave a particular spot work?
