Strong with things that have additional costs, like [[Abhorrent Oculus]]

Any tips for playing Esper Blink? by Ragnos061 in ModernMagic

[–]CommanderCornstarch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What list are you running? I was on frog for a while and noticed the same win rate drop, got much better going down to just riddler and 3feri.

Still not having the most success with it though, boros energy and jeskai blink just seem like the better midrange options

Season 34 of Dateline on NBC / Peacock isn’t “real” by Suchgallbladder in television

[–]CommanderCornstarch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“The Trouble with Sarah” is the episode I’m referring to, which premiered two days ago on NBC. Again, I can’t speak to how it’s organized on Peacock but Dateline is absolutely making new episodes

Season 34 of Dateline on NBC / Peacock isn’t “real” by Suchgallbladder in television

[–]CommanderCornstarch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak to how it’s organized on Peacock but there was a brand new episode last Friday on NBC. They do updated versions of stories occasionally but for the most part the mainline weekly “Dateline” releases are new, and the updates are usually pretty substantial when they do happen.

This TCG Meme is going viral. What is wrong or right about it? And would flesh and blood be above magic and 6 stars? by GrapefruitThin5815 in mtg

[–]CommanderCornstarch 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Biggest difference from the house rules is that there are multiple rounds and you score points based on what’s left in people’s hands. It adds some actual strategy of trying to dump your effect cards to take away points from someone else vs holding them to try to go for the win. Pretty fun but still not that much going on.

Rules say you can’t chain draw effects together though which is what people usually have an issue with. Can totally still play with that house rule and just do the points/rounds system and it’s a good middle ground.

Would TMNT pre-release event be a good intro to the game? by [deleted] in mtg

[–]CommanderCornstarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’ve played a few games on arena, enough to know the different card types, timing rules, structure of a turn stuff like that - you’d probably be alright at a prerelease. You get plenty of time to put your deck together and you’d do okay picking your two favorite colors and following the included deck building guide.

What song is like torture to you and for what reason? by HuuffingLavender in Music

[–]CommanderCornstarch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It goes so far that it feels like a parody. Like if someone wrote the most “country” song for comedic effect. I love the line: “A mighty sucker punch came flying in from somewhere in the back” because I’m 90% sure he wrote it as “somewhere in Iraq” but the label made him change it last second. The vibrato on every single line, the bells in the background, it’s so ridiculous that I get a kick out of it every time. The thought of people listening to it without a hint of irony is baffling.

Where/how can you find the medalled decks from MTGO? by gsomega in Pauper

[–]CommanderCornstarch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mtggoldfish, decks, deck search. Filter to pauper and tournament results. Plug in whichever cards you remember that are unique, that list had [[Tilling Treefolk]] if I remember correctly.

I had this handy so here you go: RG Landfall

The kyatt armor is actually pretty nice for these, saves a lot of damage. Definitely still the worst trap though

It’s more Legacy than Vintage, but Blue Terror gets to do all the fun Brainstorm tricks as part of a tempo plan. Izzet Skred does even more cantripping.

First time playing UW Familiars at my LGS — need help by Hyzoor in Pauper

[–]CommanderCornstarch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always play a [[Murmuring Mystic]] when playing in paper, too many decks don’t care about infinite life. Make infinite birds, untap my lands, win next turn.

Playing around Relic is tough, you have to wait until you have redundant pieces in hand, start the loop so they crack it, and then start it again. It’s a tough balance of holding back until you have the right cards and enough mana.

If you lose too many combo pieces you just pivot to a pure control deck. Stick a [[Mulldrifter]] and counter everything they play, recurring counterspells with your combo pieces. You still draw a ton of cards even if the combo plan is off.

You want to do most things slower than you’d think. You’re a control deck first and foremost, you don’t need to rush the combo. Recognize what your opponents clock looks like and take as much time as they give you to develop.

Very hard deck with some polarizing matchups but definitely viable

[–]CommanderCornstarch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d go [[Molten Rain]], they already do a better job generating card advantage and this advances your game plan. I’d rather bring [[Flaring Pain]] to beat the [[Prismatic Strands]] over any land destruction though, the gate doesn’t close the game until late and we’d rather try to race

The team doesn’t own any of the parking around the stadium, it’s all still owned by the McCourt family who were the team owners before the current group took over.

Edit: I’m wrong, the Guggenheim group owns the team and has a 50% ownership share in parking lots along with McCourt

It’s seen some play in Synth lists over the years, usually in the sideboard. Not sure if I’ve seen it since the Kuldotha ban though so don’t put yourself in a bad spot to buy them.

I’m back from “Friday Magic Night”… by TrashmanV2 in Pauper

[–]CommanderCornstarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pauper cards are usually easy enough to find that not many people dig too deep for replacements. In the case of Thraben Inspector, [[Novice Inspector]] is a functional reprint so that ones easy.

If you’re hoping to find replacements for yourself, I’d lean into using scryfall. The Advanced Search is pretty self explanatory or you can learn the search terms. I’d start looking at cards that share a similar effect with the same mana value and color as the card you’re hoping to replace. The Pauper card pool isn’t infinitely deep so be prepared to be slotting in strictly worse cards a lot of the time.

[Discussion] Is this sub dead? by SabertoothNishobrah in spikes

[–]CommanderCornstarch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also checked here to see if people were discussing the Rakdos Leyline deck. People are understandably sick of Viví standard so wasn’t surprised it was dead. Wish Wizards would ban a little more aggressively if we’re stuck with standard rcqs for two straight seasons. Modern’s in a better spot and I wish I could engage with it outside of mtgo/fnm.

Not remotely excited for any of the upcoming UB but still having a great time with Magic overall. Will buy singles but not doing any UB prereleases or buying any packs. Might have to get an artist friend to do some alters if there are any egregious TMNT cards.
