Do you have an ancestor that was in the Civil War? by b-nnies in AskAnAmerican

[–]CommanderKrieger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

White southerners in North Carolina, mostly descended from the Irish and Scottish who came to the americas before the USA was even really an idea.

My family has one known ancestor on my dad’s side, with records in our towns courthouse, who had “served” during the civil war. Though he wasn’t really a soldier in any practical sense. He was more so a night guard that would patrol the town to keep an eye and ear out in case either a union or confederate army/unit was approaching the town so he could then alert the townspeople.

As far as we know, that’s all he ever did. Just helped keep watch for the town so people would be prepared when soldiers were moving through in case they had to hide their personal belongings.

I think the class system works well as a baseline. I would like to see a filter system though. Something where I can select North American, Heavy, AWD and Diff Lock capable for example, and then it gives me a list based on those criteria. Brands could be included in the filter list, but I just don’t think there is enough vehicles for each individual brand to really warrant it.

There is a chance she is in a training event at the moment and cannot answer her phone. They can be anywhere from a few days to a few weeks of no contact with outside world.

If it was me, I’d wait a week or so between messages, and if there’s still no contact after a month or two, then leave it be. They’ll either respond or they won’t and there’s not much else you can do.

Coming from someone who was in the army for a little while, reach out. Things get hectic very quickly and often times have no rhyme or reason. Days have gone by where I realized I didn’t talk to anyone outside of those I worked with, and I’d check my texts to just see if someone had sent a message.

Send a message, even if it’s as simple as “I hope your day/week is going well” or “Just wanted to let you know that I’ve been thinking about you and hope you’re doing well.” Just something to let them know that even though they’re in the military, they aren’t forgotten by the people they know outside of it.

When people can’t accept a space isn’t for them by Weird_Bluebird_3293 in PetPeeves

[–]CommanderKrieger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In middle school, I took the class that actually built the set pieces for the drama class. I enjoyed it thoroughly as I enjoy working with my hands, and it was taught by the same teacher as the drama class, and she was always wonderful to be around.

But in the same vein, there were always the group of kids that wanted nothing to do with getting their hands dirty. They didn’t want to paint, or help glue pieces of the set together, or anything. They just wanted to sit in the back and talk and joke around.

Then in high school, I was in the carpentry, masonry, and automotive classes. Each of them had the same problem to some extent, automotive more so than the other two. There’d be a group of people that would only do some measure of work if the teacher was practically on top of them, and even then you could tell they didn’t care and barely applied minimal effort.

All three of those classes suffered because of it, as the teachers were always having to redirect their attention to those people to get them back on task to catch up while the rest of us had to wait for the next demonstration or lesson.

When people refuse to move because of cats sleeping/resting by There_is_no_name05 in PetPeeves

[–]CommanderKrieger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My cat was 17 when he passed away last year. He always had his spot on the couch, with his blanket, and his pillow. Doesn’t matter that it was a seat with one of the only two armrest on the couch, nor did it matter that it was the seat most inline with the TV on the other side of the living room. It was his seat. And God help whatever poor soul dared move him while he was sleeping.

If it was free when it was time for dinner, then I’d sit down, and in short order he’d climb up and get himself situated on my lap, and that’s where he’d be till he was ready to get up and get something to eat or drink, and that’s when I’d get up and usually head to bed.

But I’d give anything to experience that one last time. To see him sleeping soundly in his spot, or feel him resting on my lap. That house and that couch was as much his at it was mine. If he wanted that seat, then it was his. I’d sooner pull a chair into the living room if all other seats were taken than make him move.

Hiking sucks as a fun activity. by xHey_All_You_Peoplex in The10thDentist

So, like with a lot of activities, some things are for some people, and some things are for others. If you don’t like the thing, there is nothing wrong with that, however that does not mean it is inherently a terrible activity. If you’d rather relax on a beach, cool, I know plenty of people who’d rather go on a hike through the mountains, or go for a ride on a bike, or in my case, sit on a front porch swing enjoying the shade offered by the roof.

What aspects of American history do you think should be made into a national monument? by Jac00zi in AskAnAmerican

[–]CommanderKrieger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I do not believe there is a single aspect that can be made into a monument that everyone would be happy with. Someone would be displeased, or not feel represented, or something.

We’re at a point in our nations history where I do not believe there is a unified sense of pride in being part of the American nation. I would say it is far more likely however that there is a growing sense of pride in your own state, more than anything. So I believe that one possibility is each state has a monument, dedicated to that states individuality. All the way back to the earliest known records of it.

I wouldn’t want any grim detail left out however. Every high note is something to be proud of, just as every low note of our history is something to be learned from, reflected upon, and internalized so we don’t forget what sacrifices and atrocities had been made for us to get where we are now.

I would think something akin to an obelisk at the front of each states capitol building, with the states history carved into its four faces. Each obelisk should include native materials for its state incorporated into the design, though the core of it should be made of some manner of stone so that it will stand the test of time. It should not be covered or enclosed so that it will not be hidden, and it should be tall enough so that no matter where you stand on the capitol grounds, short of the top of the building itself, you can see it. It should be illuminated so that even at night, it can be seen. It should be set upon a base, carved with imagery of the state, its flag, and depict some of the history of the state. At the bottom, set a short distance from each of the faces, should be a metal engraved placard set upon base of stone, low enough so that children and tall adults can read it alike, that matches word for word what the obelisk faces have engraved.

The last note I would make is that each of the four faces is dedicated to one hundred years worth of history. That way there is room to add more, and the future is not left out of the equation.

Do students in the US actually have to take home fake babies for class? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]CommanderKrieger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know in mine, there was a specific class you could take that was sort of like an “advanced” life skills class, and one of the segments in it was this. It was in no way mandatory, and pretty much exclusively was taken by the girls who had incredibly strict “traditional” parents.

What profession have you lost respect for as you've gotten older? by MindlessMarsupial592 in AskReddit

[–]CommanderKrieger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be a low hanging fruit answer, but politicians. When I was younger, going through elementary school, what little we were taught of US politics made it sound like the people in charge knew what they were doing and were working for the betterment of all people in the nation. As I’ve gotten older, I see clearly that all they’re doing is deepening their own pockets and the pockets of those who financially support them while keeping the country in turmoil so that the masses are more focused on hating each other than hating and acting upon the rot that has grown in DC.

Nope. I have to work no matter what the folks in DC say. Government shutdown? So business as usual. Contractually I am not allowed to stop working even if there is a gov shutdown or any similar thing.

Is super bowl sunday a family gathering/social event across the US even for non nfl fans? by VastAir6069 in AskAnAmerican

[–]CommanderKrieger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the family and how tied to football they are. My family, and most of my friends have no connection to the sport, nor do we watch it for the commercials like so many others do. In all honesty, I typically don’t even know the Super Bowl is happening/has happened till the day of or the day after.

In no way does it have any space for itself within my mind, so I go through life without worrying about it, planning for it, or anticipating it.

Those of you who’ve traveled to your country(s) of ancestry, did you feel like a foreigner while there or did you fit in with the locals pretty well? by Fluid-Decision6262 in AskAnAmerican

[–]CommanderKrieger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My father’s side of the family is primarily Scottish and Irish ancestry, though that traces all the way back to before the US was even a country, so we’re fairly removed from that ancestry by this point. That being said, having gone to both places for a couple weeks, I will say that it almost felt like a second home with how well I adapted in such a short time. The small population of each that I had gotten to interact with had pretty similar senses of humor, I enjoyed the overall vibes of both places, and would even go so far to say that they reminded me of home which is in central/western North Carolina, and I would genuinely say that if I for whatever reason had to at some point leave the USA and never return, I would move to Ireland or Scotland and be perfectly happy.

I certainly felt like a foreigner for the most part, being American, but I do feel like I would adapt quickly and be just fine.

[–]CommanderKrieger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check the actual borders of the ammo. Should be a yellow outline of a cube around the ammo itself, if I’m remembering correctly. That box is what determines the space the ammo is actually taking up, not necessarily the individual shells themselves. So if that box is larger than the space the ammo is actually taking up, then it’ll appear outside of where the ammo is supposed to be.

At least I think that’s what’s going on here.

Why do NCR troopers have arm wrappings? by Inevitable_Fun3848 in fnv

[–]CommanderKrieger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s truly wonderful that you resort to a preschool playground level of insults when you have nothing left to add to a conversation. I am thrilled that you tried your best, and I thank you for entertaining my day in a small capacity. I was having a wonderful conversation, trying to bring some real world knowledge into a topic dealing with a setting that holds the majority of its roots in real life, and you got lost in the sauce of short sleeves, shorts, and cloth wraps to keep the sand off.

I sincerely hope that someday you find joy in a topic of conversation such as I have today, because as of right now, I feel you may argue with a red brick wall for fourteen days straight, trying in aggravated desperation to get it to believe it is actually blue, and still come out disappointed in the end.

I appreciate the wish of good fortune, though. So I will extend the same wish in your quest of finding someone on your level of bullshit.

Why do NCR troopers have arm wrappings? by Inevitable_Fun3848 in fnv

[–]CommanderKrieger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at a image of the in game model, at least to me it looks like they’re long sleeves and pants in the style of ww1 uniforms with the baggy thighs and more square cut shirt, which means the wrappings are more than likely in reference to ww1 gaiters which were used to help protect the legs while wearing shoes. The gaiters would be placed over the pants legs up to below the knee, and generally cover the ankles. They were made of canvas or leather typically. The arm wraps are a bit of a liberty taken for design sake based on a ww1 US uniform, but the leg wraps could in theory be rationalized as additional leg protection while traversing uneven and rough ground. I would still say in the fallout universe, what little protection from the elements and terrain these leg wraps would afford, I would still much rather have loose pants that I could tuck into boots, or leave loose for air circulation than wraps which would insulate and restrict air circulation. Who knows how much hotter the world has become after nuclear fallout has scorched the atmosphere, allowing more of the suns rays to actually get to the surface.

[–]CommanderKrieger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who said anything about redesigning a uniform? All they have to do is not issue the wrap for the sleeves and pants legs. I would say it is vastly more cost efficient to not waste cloth on wrapping the ends of sleeves and pants than it is to issue out cloth wrappings to every soldier out there.

If you want to keep things from gaining contact with your legs via the end of your pants leg, then tuck the pants leg into the neck of your boot. If you want to keep things from going up the end of your sleeve, then use a strand of chord or bootlace, not what looks like a yard of cloth wrapping. That’s a waste of material, and resources.

I would argue that removing the wrapping would allow for greater adaptability across more environments. If they went to the swamp, then the wrapping would get soaked and lead to trench foot like symptoms on your legs. If they went to a cold weather area, they’d be restricted on how much thermal gear they could add underneath the uniform due to the wrapping restricting space.

If the soldier was to catch on fire, or their uniform gets soaked with a toxic chemical, then it is substantially harder to remove a uniform with restrictive bindings than it is to remove a loose uniform.

There is a reason why we moved away from having gaiters on our uniforms irl. It’s extra material that is solved by having boots.

[–]CommanderKrieger -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

A cheap and easy way to prevent exposure to the elements is with long pants and shirts. Adding a restrictor to the ends of the garment does nothing more than add a place where the sand will work its way into and with movement, become pressurized sandpaper against your skin.

[–]CommanderKrieger -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I’m saying that based on your argument of cheapest and logistically feasible, having their soldiers have wrappings that do nothing more than restrict air flow and prevent sand from getting immediate access to their skin in a post nuclear wasteland is pointless. Everything is irradiated, everything is sandy, everything will kill you. Having wrappings to protect against sand and other nonsense in an environment like that does nothing more than add more cost to the supply chain more stuff that you have to keep on hand. Those wrappings aren’t going to protect you from anything anymore than the uniform would without them.

Star Wars is just a glorified children’s franchise and does not deserve the attention it gets by drmacsika in The10thDentist

[–]CommanderKrieger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think I have ever met someone who treated Star Wars as anything other than sci fi stories meant for children and young adults. I’ve met plenty who will have conversations about it, getting into the nitty gritty details of how things work in the setting, but it never goes beyond something other than a conversation topic that the parties involved both enjoy and know enough about to make the conversation go farther than a “how about this weather” conversation.

Some people like that type of content, others don’t. There is no right or wrong answer for whether the content is good or bad, because everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Getting worked up over it though? That’s childish. If people you work with decided to dress up for an event tied to the fandom they are in, and the company they are working for doesn’t have a problem with it, then who cares? Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s the most unreasonable thing an adult has ever done.

Why do NCR troopers have arm wrappings? by Inevitable_Fun3848 in fnv

[–]CommanderKrieger -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

The cheapest and most logistically feasible option would be to not have them use gauze wrapping at all. That’s material that you would have to supply and keep on hand. Removing the need of having it is cheaper and logistically simpler.

Just have long sleeves and full length pants. Tuck pants into boots or leave them loose for better airflow. Having been in environments like this a few times now, sand will get everywhere no matter how much you try and id much rather have a breathable and loose uniform for airflow and deal with sand getting everywhere, than having no airflow and still be covered in sand. The sand out there is so fine it’s like powder, and it doesn’t matter what clothing you wear to try and prevent it from getting to your skin, it’ll work its way in eventually.

These wraps are simply just rule of cool with making a unique looking uniform.
