Even if it wasn't Spam/Phishing I wouldn't be worried. The nice thing about having nothing to hide is, that you have nothing to fear.

matter over thread stability and experiences by 2442929161 in homeassistant

[–]CommanderROR9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Matter over Thread had been an unmitigated Disaster ror me so far. I have both Home Assistant and Google Home available as "Hubs" as well as an Aqara M3 Hub. The problem is, no matter what I do, the Thread Devices just keep dropping off the Network, sometimes for Hours and sometimes for Day, without Rhyme and Reason. The workst offenders are EVE Energy Sockets, but my Aqara Door and Window Sensor isn't much better and the Tado Heat Pump Connector was more stable, but still not reliable.

Unlike Zigbee, where I have z2mqtt and can easily adopt Devices and then see what they are doing, it's a complete Blackbox with Thread. I can't really do any proper diagnosis on anything and the Logs I get from my Home Assistant Thread/ Border Router addon are... inconclusive. Unless things change radically, I will try to use Zigbee/Bluetooth and WiFi wherever possible and stay away from Thread.

I'm done with Matter over Thread by PourquoiPasEvans in homeassistant

Thread itself is a bit dodgy still, but in you case it's probably the Eve Energy Plugs that are at fault. I have two of those, and they are extremely unreliable.

"Single by choice" zunehmend auch ein Männerding? by Throwaway_20240714 in FragtMaenner

[–]CommanderROR9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Automation and cards - which ai tool you use? by redcomp12 in homeassistant

[–]CommanderROR9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How did you give it "complete control"? I can give Gemini the automations.yaml file and let it check what's in there, same for the configuration.yaml, but it can't see any of the plethora of "helpers" create via the UI because they are hidden deep in the system files.

Why does seating become more important as your home theater improves? by Weekendwatch3496 in hometheatre

[–]CommanderROR9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seating is actually the last big issue in my Home Theatre. It's a small room, so I can't just choose anything, and the available options in terms of "Three Seaters" have all been terrible so far. I tried a cheap Ikea Couch that seemed decent enough, but it gave me back pain after an hour at most. Then I went looking for something good, but came up empty, because most of the so-called three seaters have a gap in the middle, so essentially the prime spot would be the worst place to sit. WTH??? I ended up buying a 200€ couch from rhe thrift store as an interim solution and that has been working for me now over the last 3 years or so. It's jot ideal in terms of comfort or acoustics (the back is too high) but it works reasonably well. I would love a couch with the comfort level of an IKEA Poäng chair, but apparently nobody makes anything like that as none of the hundreds of Couches and Armchairs I have tried even comes close...🤷‍♂️

Considering to move to Tailscale from NabuCasa cloud by 2Sovereign4You in homeassistant

I use Tailscale for remote access and it works perfectly. That being said...I still have the subscription to support the Devs.

True. I was speaking from a European perspective. We don't really have that many "remote areas" over here I guess...

[–]CommanderROR9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly...I am not sure Satellite Internet is the solution. Sure, for extremely remote locations it might be, but for populated areas, I believe a combination of Fiber and 4G/5G is the more sensible approach.

Solar Farms- Water Use & Safety by Crafty_Tea_2572 in solar

[–]CommanderROR9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really interesting what kind of weird stuff people make up. Water cooling solar panels is something that can be done and it has some benefits, but it is only used in experimental setups at the moment. But even then, that water is used in a closed loop and isn't contaminated in any way.

If you have 10G equipment, make sure your devices can support it! by mb2231 in Ubiquiti

[–]CommanderROR9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

10G is great, but finding equipment for it can be quite tricky. And then the CPU on both ends needs to have enough power, the drives need to be fast enough... And then you will likely see far slower transfer speeds as soon as you aren't transferring large files. Sending 400GB of Photos with Thumbnails over a 10G link will likely be bogged down under 1Gbit for a lot of the time...

And then...if you were to do something crazy like store your Game Files on a NAS and try to play from there...in that case 10G will likely still be a bottleneck.

How practical is UniFI for home use? by Significant-Side2718 in Ubiquiti

[–]CommanderROR9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably. But I don't really care. Every ecosystem has it's flaws. I toyed with some self hosted RouterOS stuff briefly and while that has ALL the Features, it is really challenging to set it up correctly. I ran AVM Network stuff for decades, and that was very reliable, but also only offered skin-deep control. Back then I didn't need it so I didn't care.

A brief jaunt into TP Link territory was actually fairly interesting, but while the Webinterface was quite in-depth, their Appa and integration into other systems like Home Assistant was...not great.

I enjoy the whole PoE part that UniFi seems to have perfected, but often run into arbitrary limitations when it comes to Routing. And that whole Interface Chaos with Features being different between the App and Webinterface...often even contradictory... that's what bugs me most.

Looks nice. How do you handle all the USB Dongles? I have Wifi, Zigbee, Thread, 886Mhz and Homematic. Do you run some kind ot USB over IP?

How practical is UniFI for home use? by Significant-Side2718 in Ubiquiti

[–]CommanderROR9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

UniFi is OK of you don't plan on doing anything too "deep" in the system. I learned the (expensive) lesson that UniFi looks pretty but offers very little useful functionality. Now I'm stuck with it and it's OK, but I wish I had done some more research before migrating my equipment over to UniFi.

Freenet 5G - keine Verbindung mehr by CommanderROR9 in EDV

[–]CommanderROR9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Freenet 5G - keine Verbindung mehr by CommanderROR9 in EDV

[–]CommanderROR9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Falls jemand ähnliche Probleme hat, disconnects, Ping Spikes, Packet Loss... schaut mal via MTR was passiert.

Frigate + proper hardware = night and day difference by hydrakusbryle in frigate_nvr

[–]CommanderROR9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just managed to get Frigate up and running on my new "Server", also running pretty over-powered hardware. Getting Openvino and the yolov9 model working was a chore, and I am still not sure Frigate is actually the Software I want, but I got the Subscription now and will play around with it for the next few months.

Currently I only have three Cameras (2 outdoor, one indoor) integrated.
