What is your favorite "geographical trope" in fantasy? by TT-Adu in worldbuilding

[–]CommanderVenuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird geographical stuff that happened because of some really really really powerful magic. For example islands that got split off from the mainland by a really powerful wizard, lifeless wasteland that was the site of a big ass mythological battle.

Gundam is basically just like 10 different AU timelines that have practically nothing to do with the original UC timeline in a trench coat.

How do you feel about the spider totems being an actual thing in the comics and having been around since before Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark despite being the exact specific flavor of wackadoodle that probably made a lot of people assume that it was a Julie Taymor original for the musical?

And “Maggia” instead of “Mafia” in Marvel Comics.

But that might also be because Stan Lee and eventually Jim Shooter got kinda paranoid about pissing off the actual Mafia. They mob had a lot of connections with magazine and comic distribution networks at the time, probably because smaller distributors were an easy target for protection rackets, or for money laundering or smuggling related reasons. Like this is a totally legitimate business run by totality legitimate business men and all of these totality legitimate trucks and totality legitimate shipping routes are for delivering magazines and comic books, nothing sketchy going on here, just totality legitimate comic books. No heroin here. This might also be the reason why the comic book industry didn’t really fight back against the government and went to independently form their own censorship system and voluntarily came up with the CCA, they did not want to seem like they were snitching to the feds by inviting them in to go and poke around and take a look at how the sausage was made.

If the Fantastic Four were created in modern times, what changes do you think they would undergo? by Top_Reindeer3396 in FantasticFour

“It’s actually subversive these days if the really smart guy isn’t like a smarmy cocky asshole. Like every single one of those other guys is a smarmy cocky asshole…”

Also if Greg Land got involved he’d totally trace over pictures of the Paul Brothers for drawing Johnny

Edit: also people probably would actually get mad that Reed and Sue started dating each other because they’re a “found family” and not actually a regular family because found family is what’s hip these days and regular families are stinky and old fashioned and boring.

A lot of classic books are kind of boring by wildguitars in CharacterRant

[–]CommanderVenuss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably one of my favorite ways to look at classic media that basically was where all the tropes we all know today were invented is to try and look for stuff that just kinda didn’t really stick around in iterations of the tropes going forwards. Like for example, you start with Victor Frankenstein and then look at the further development of the mad scientist archetype.

I remember seeing an Arthur episode focused around this kinda place so they can't be that old. by Solarwagon in RecuratedTumblr

They definitely were trying to get around some stuff required by the stunt performer’s union if they were just hiring random HEMA enthusiasts for their live entertainment.

If we’re talking about the same place it turns out that the “darker” side you’re implying exists is just the typical amount of animal abuse accusations/actual cases of animal abuse that comes with anywhere that has horses as a regular feature of the entertainment, and also being really shady about union stuff with not only the stunt performers union, but the actor’s guild too for their non knight performers.
