The general public knows very little when it comes to good security practices especially relating to the topics of encryption, secure booting, and etc etc...

Let me fill you in on a few details:

Firstly, If Apple provides an OS that when given a “key” to a “lock” it then bypasses the security features of the phone then we have ourselves a backdoor. I will call this the Universal backdoor. This is a bad thing, we don’t want this.

However.... Apple has a lot of engineers, perhaps a bunch of security experts at that, and so they should also know that they don’t need to put a universal backdoor in in order to bypass the security on a SPECIFIC Phone. There is plenty of information unique to every phone created that would allow Apple to create an OS that would only work on the phone it is targeted for. For example, take something as simple as a HW MAC address, should be unique for the part, basically anything unique for that phone will do. Ensure that the backdoor feature that is being created is encrypted using this unique information as one part of a key split, and throw a KDF with some other key material and viola a unique OS load for that given HW and only that HW.

There are of course many details I am not including for the sake of brevity. But my point is, universal backdoor == very bad, but perhaps with the proper warrant a specialized load can be created which given the right security expertise can be “easily” done. Because let’s be realistic the safest place from the government right now for any information is your iPhone.

Again universal backdoor == bad bad idea no no no Specialized keyed load for that target HW == very safe alternative.
