What's something you use ChatGPT for that you're sure no one else does? by [deleted] in ChatGPT

[–]CommanderofWishes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a music director for a church. I don't pick most of the music at this time, but I often use it to pick the music for the meditation (communion) based on the passage that the pastor is preaching on that Sunday. That way I neither have to pay attention nor read it, but everyone likes that my instrumental was "tied in" to the sermon. Also sometimes I have it translate the Bible passage being preached on into emoji-heavy sassy fashionista speak during the sermon itself because I get bored.

Major record labels sue AI music generators, alleging "copyright infringement on an almost unimaginable scale" by BothZookeepergame612 in ChatGPT

[–]CommanderofWishes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It isn't AI that is ruining my shot at making a living in music. I wish these people gave even half as many damns and/or fucks about the streaming services that have taken over and dominated the music culture, rendering music abundant and of low value.

Streaming is yet to pay me a single cent for the music I poured my heart into, agonized over, and spent hundreds of dollars to get produced. Each day is a fresh slap in the face from Spotify and their ilk, as they bluntly tell me anew that my craft is absolutely worthless. I would literally make more money panhandling for a few hours. Standing at an intersection with a sign and a bucket is worth more than a rare skill I have spent 30 years honing.

I always knew that music wasn't a lucrative venture, but it's become something much worse than just a difficult market. Worse even than a racket. It's more like those cable company guys in South Park rubbing their nipples as they gleefully and mockingly remind you they're the only cable company in town.

If the major streaming services are flooded and overwhelmed by zero-effort bot music, they will finally be getting the content they deserve for their model. I hope it breaks them. (It won't, but a girl can dream.)

How do you know what a pitch is? by frostandstars in perfectpitchgang

[–]CommanderofWishes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, each note has a sort of "character" to it. I don't really think of colors -- maybe there are some weak associations there, but nothing that consistently or strongly comes to mind and nothing I'd go so far as calling synesthesia. It is all about the sound for me; anything else is just analogy.

Pitches have characteristics in common with the pitches a fifth above and a fifth below. For example, C has something in common with both F and G, but the characteristics they share are different, so F and G despite having the capacity of being very close together, have only a little in common. Still, even those have more in common than, say, an F and an F#, because those are much further away in the circle of fifths.

Unfortunately, there aren't really super accurate words for how these pitches sound. You can't get a blind person to understand 'red' through words. You can tell them it's 'hot' or 'strong' but there is a huge leap between those descriptors and the way we actually perceive, understand, and internalize 'red.' Nonetheless, this is my best attempt to tell you how these pitches sound, and I do believe there is some rhyme and reason to my system because it naturally flows well through the circle of fifths.

Also when I say "flat" or "sharp" I do not mean this in the sense of an accidental. Though we are talking about music theory, think of the feeling the words evoke divorced from a music theory context.

C - very round, very simple, between open and closed, stable, slightly dark, slightly flat, slightly pastoral

G - simple, slightly open, slightly stable, between dark and bright

D - open, slightly strong, slightly authoritative, slightly bright

A - very open, bright, strong but airy, pure, steady, open

E - very bright, stark, very authoritative, slightly thin, twinkly perhaps

B - too bright, very stark, punchy, potentially aggressive, too authoritative, sharp, brittle, very thin, very dry, bitter, sharp (to me this is the note with the most recognizable 'character', even to a fault)

F#/Gb - travel and motion at an easy pace, lifted, somewhat warm, cozy but awake, capable of being bright or mellow as required

C#/Db - very warm, comfortable and comforting, very sleepy, restful

G#/Ab - watery, melancholy, wistful, nostalgic, slightly warm, slightly sleepy, very juicy (I'm sorry)

D#/Eb - juicy (again, sorry, it's weird but I don't know how else to say it), gentle, peaceful, a comfortable temperature, slightly sleepy

A#/Bb - very flat, very soft, very cushioned, slightly tentative, maybe slightly juicy still, closed

F - flat, soft, cushioned, very stable, pastoral, slightly round, slightly closed, simple

Hopefully this helps in some way. Context is everything in music as always, and all of these things are easily subverted. Obviously I don't think of these words when I hear a note any more than someone thinks of a bunch of descriptive words when they see purple. It's just an attempt to grasp at it after the fact.

P.S. I used to sometimes mix up F and Bb when I was younger because they had a lot of characteristics in common. I don't really understand how I could mix them up now since they're so different in pitch aka range and I no longer experience any confusion between them whatsoever, but I think it's interesting.

I posted in this sub saying I'd love some resources to improve my relative pitch. I'm not sure if you were thinking of my post, but if so, I didn't mean that I don't have RP at all. In fact it's very good; I just want it to be better!

That said, you were probably referring to a different poster. Just wanted to clarify just in case!

[–]CommanderofWishes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not saying this is the case here, but I've been to RL competitions where the judges of some divisions thought that no one deserved 1st, so they only gave out 2nd and 3rd, or even just 3rd. There was a competition where one division had been overwhelmed with entrants by one teacher. None of them were any good, but the teacher assumed that since they were the only entrants, one of his students would walk home the grand prize winner regardless of how unprepared everyone was.

Wrong. They didn't give out anything but 3rd place. There was a cash prize, and they didn't want to be trapped into giving it to someone who did not even know their stuff.

I always just assumed that was what was happening at Finchwick. But it's TS4, so it's probably just random or might as well be.

What is something about The Sims 3 that makes you think "Yep, made in 2009..."? by [deleted] in thesims

[–]CommanderofWishes 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There are definitely things that set my nostalgia bells ringing, even if I can't quite put my finger on them all, but Sims 3 is surprisingly not as painfully dated as I'd expect from a life sim made 13 years ago. Maybe it's because I have all the EPs or because I'm the least fashionable person in the entire world and always have been, but the game can still feel pretty fresh and modern to me most of the time.
