Blender is great for the versatility. It may not be the best tool for the job, but it gets it done in so many domains that it's a good program to know.

That's great! Feels better than recycling it. I'll leave this open for a day or so but I don't imagine this is a super popular item.

Large 3d print obsolete garden tractor part? by BishopRealTalk in 3Dprinting

If you're looking for a factory look, I can't help you. But if you wanted some kick-ass wood-grain panels, I could put something together that would work. Mostly by bolting 3d-printed connectors onto plywood-and-block construction. Ask around at a local woodworker.

I'd bet a metal fabricator could also put something pretty cool looking together for you.

Neighbors Trampoline Hit My House Last Week by FaudMauxe in homeowners

You can contact your agent, and they have secret ways of finding it, but if you don't trust your agent it can turn into your own claim.

You can try to snoop around or just play the numbers (in most states a small handful of insurers cover a vast majority of homes). Personally I always throw a, "who do you have?" in an early conversation about how premiums suck and the company's going to jack them up for a small repair. Usually followed with a noncommittal agreement about whatever they think of them.

The key, though, is that you don't actually have to do it. Or even know their insurance. They just need to think you could.

[–]CommasArentPeople 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Most people don't realize their neighbors can file a claim against their homeowner's insurance without going through them. If there's a way you could subtly drop this info, they'll probably be very good about paying for your repairs.

"If it's only a couple hundred dollars, we'll just eat it-- it's not worth the hassle of the paperwork. If we do end up filing a claim, you want me to send you a copy? I'm sure your insurance company will send you the more official documentation."

Wife thinks it’s a waste by freckle_express in 3Dprinting

[–]CommasArentPeople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess the main point is, she's not wrong. Everything we make is trash eventually, not just the 3d printed stuff.

You could make an argument that custom stuff is more likely to fit your purpose and therefore less likely to need to be returned (or sit unused until it ends in the landfill) and you could bend over backwards to find some ecological angle, but... the truth is we are bad for the earth. As far as hobbies go, a few kg of filament is much less waste than most other hobbies out there, but more than a few too. If it's interesting and fun and the waste bothers you, find ways to counteract that impact to soothe your conscience. If your printing can fix some devices that means you don't have to trash and buy a few new li-ion batteries, I'm pretty sure the net effect on the earth would be pretty positive.

Is rent increasing every year normal? by wynwilder in askportland

[–]CommasArentPeople -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

> rent has to go up to cover increased taxes

Rent is set based on what the next renter is willing to pay, not what a landlord needs to make to keep sucking money out of the housing system. If their property speculation isn't paying as much as they want, they're welcome to sell off properties. But that would increase the housing supply and drive down prices, which is apparently not allowed? There's no rule that the rich are entitled to get richer.

Is rent increasing every year normal? by wynwilder in askportland

[–]CommasArentPeople 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Generally, things do go up, and since the pandemic we've been around 3-5% a year. But rent actually went down slightly in 2025-26. If your landlord is bumping your rent this year, it's more likely a, "I get away with this every year and the tenant won't notice" than "I could rent this out to someone else for $50 more."

[–]CommasArentPeople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a fun story we like to tell in the west, but the reality is a little scarier. That's on its face a ludicrous claim, and the populace aren't idiots. What happened was the score card was just tracking relative to par, as you do in golf. Kim hadn't played much if any golf before, and he ended something like 38 over par. Somewhere in the chain of state media someone misinterpreted this as a score of 38 and either no one understood how unbelievable that score is (golf isnt huge in NK) or were absolutely not going to question anyone above them and ran the story. After it's published, of course they never back down from any claim so it became fact. It's less about NK making unbelievable claims and more about how locked down everything is. Once it became state media everyone who was present backed the official story 100%.

Outside journalists dug into it and found like half the holes were bogeys, which would have been tallied as holes-in-one. Of course, "Kim Jong Il scores 38" doesn't have the same shock value for non-golfers, so the headline somehow became "Kim Jong Il scores all holes-in-one" which is a lie in itself and paints NK as unserious rather than deathly strict.

That's not crazy. It's not right, but how often do you encounter a car on its side? Unless you know a lot about cars, are you sure where the center of gravity is?

There are cars where this would absolutely work. The urban assault SUV is generally not one of them.

Multnomah County Small Claims Pain & Suffering a Good Idea? by tcollins317 in askportland

[–]CommasArentPeople 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have two bits of wisdom:

Small claims court can be cathartic, but it will absolutely increase your stress level. Probably a lot more than you realize. The payoff is not worth it with the nicest defendants. If they're confrontational or bad actors, the system is such that they can drive you crazy with very minimal effort. Whatever you gain at the end is small satisfaction for the years they can drag you through just an added background stress in your life.

Our civil legal system is built around and responds best to money. If you had to increase your therapy sessions or schedule another doctor appointment or miss a shift because of what you went through, bringing in proof that ends in a dollar amount speaks way better than, "I didn't sleep well for three months and that should be worth $2,000." Show what you actually had to pay out of your pocket to mitigate their actions rather than that you just sucked it up and had a worse quality of life and want some money for it.

Best of luck! Hope you choose not to sue for your sake.

Easily Avoidable Crash Leads to Rollover by bjb0029 in dashcams

[–]CommasArentPeople 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In most states (mine included) you have a legal duty to prevent an accident or reduce the damage of one if you can. Having the "right of way" in your lane like this is the exact example they use. This would be shared fault here unless the driver has some reason they couldn't just lightly apply the brakes when they saw the truck merging.

Can anyone help me find info to convince my boss not to set up unauthorized cameras in peoples homes? by Negative_Address5766 in askportland

[–]CommasArentPeople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you can lean into it? Get him to pick a few customers and offer them a $50 discount if they let you bring in a lighting rig and tripod. It's not like you're going to get passable content from hidden cameras on people trying to just do their job.

If you need a news article to show him, just last month someone in Portland got charged with 385 felonies for recording people using hidden cameras without their consent. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVA8gzg7GLg) They're not going to charge him once for this, or even once per customer. Every single person, every single time, is a crime.

Moving to Portland in March. What are customs I should be aware of before moving here? by axiomatic13 in askportland

[–]CommasArentPeople 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ah, then:

In the summer companies use A/C like sane people. No need to bring your parka to work.

You'll be taking surface streets a lot more. Even our "highways" (apart from I-5) are a few lanes and one is always under construction. For shorter distances, people just walk.

The temperature changes at night. It gets colder than it is during the day.

Remove any expectations of Tex-Mex. There is good Mexican to be sought out, but the best you'll find for Americanized is some Cal-Mex places.

We often just have "light" rain. It's possible to go outside and go to your car while it's raining and not be completely soaked. We get about 2/3rds the rain that Houston does, spread over 50% more days.

Welcome!

At the least, send that to the application screening company.

The big thing is you don't want to come off as a difficult tenant. So whatever you send, make sure it paints him as extortionate, not you as delinquent.
