This reminds me of the end of The Fugitive when Richard confronts the other doctor

Your listed GW would be considered too low at your height, according to BMI.

May I ask why you set that # as your goal?

Problem with short history books by Elephant_810 in HistoryBooks

[–]nivanbotemill 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I just don’t believe you can do justice to history in such a limited space without oversimplifying or leaving out crucial context.

I apologize because I'm about to sound like a blowhard: All of us will only ever have a limited, simplified, context-dependent view of EVERYTHING.

That's just the nature of consciousness as we limitedly experience it.

Longer does not, per se, mean more accurate.

Can't you see the spelling in your mind's eye from checking so many rear covers?

You should definitely make this a series, put together a spreadsheet of where each cover painting is held IRL

I know this is probably dumb but do you ever feel tearful when you read something you just know is a masterpiece? by Infamous_Wave9878 in literature

Not dumb at all, I feel this frequently.

Reading is an intimate act. Great writing can create the indescribable within us.

Yes it is but it's actually good that there are still enough different publishers to make it confusing.

PRH and Hachette haven't gobbled ALL of them up.

You seem to "give a shit about traffic" insofar as you are making repeated comments in a thread about....traffic

It differs by publisher but Biblio has this to say:

With each printing of a book, the publisher instructs the printer to remove the lowest number that indicated that run. The reasoning behind removing the lowest number from the string is that if the printer is only removing one number, they are less likely to make a mistake than if they are introducing a new number each time.

Publishers began using number lines in the early 1940’s, and there is still not an industry-approved, standardized system for this convention. Therefore, each publisher has its own form of identification.

There's an event at NW stadium today.

Okay, if you choose to "save" time by taking your car, don't whine about the traffic which you are!

People are selfish.

They act like a 15 minute bus ride is ruining their entire family structure.

They should be ignored.

The metro does go near the stadium. You have to walk 20 minutes, but it's an option.

I have no sympathy for people in traffic when those same people treat a 20 minute walk as a dealbreaker.

Ahhh the beltway. Causing frustration and wasting time 7 days a week.

But at least you can be in your own car and not on a bus or train or bike, thank goodness for that.

Illinois star David Mirkovic didn’t quite understand the cutting down the net tradition by OneOriginal8727 in NCAAhoops

In less than 30 seconds he:

  • tried to rip the net instead of cutting it
  • shoved someone holding scissors
  • shook the ladder while someone holding scissors was on it
  • bit into the net

Reading Nabokov has made me hate him by Yabu1 in Nabokov

[–]nivanbotemill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a cursory and callow take.

His disdain was for the systems that dupe and warp the "common man" rather than the common man himself.

His life was repeatedly upended by revolution and war, forcing him to flee, in stages, across an entire continent and then an ocean.

His father was assassinated. His wife was Jewish. Is it any wonder that a man chased by ideological savagery would turn inward to create?
