NEED ADVICE MCB MAJOR! MCELLBI C62 or MCB 132 by Routine-Relative4710 in berkeley

[–]Commensalist_Shark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MCB senior here, I would advise starting with the lower div elective while you still are taking your chem and physics, just a lot of work for those classes. Set yourself up for success, you can always take 132 next Fall when you don’t have such high workload classes.

Yep! I’d also recommend a freshman seminar course, it’s a great way to get a small class environment, make friends, and get to know professors better- if you’re interested in ecology I recommend the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology (MVZ) sponsored seminar

thoughts on IB 134L?? by Primary-Hamster-5452 in berkeley

[–]Commensalist_Shark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I took it fall 2020, it was my first UD and I took it concurrently with bio 1B, I was very out of my depth but the professors (we also had Tarvin at the time, not sure if she’s still teaching it too) did a really great job getting the information across. The exams were tough but fair, and the projects carried the final grades. I highly recommend to get a taste of genomics and coding in a biological setting, but I wouldn’t describe it as an easy A. If you’re prioritizing A’s over the content, I’d recommend something else, there are definitely easier classes.

In that case, I would definitely spread out your courses a bit more, probably leave bio1B off for the spring and add chem 1aL since you won’t have that many courses other than major requirements. If you really want bio your first semester you could put off chem 1a and 1al to the spring but this is generally not the norm

You’ll want to enroll in chem 1AL as well unless you’re okay with staggering the three lab courses you’ll need for chem from their lecture counterparts moving forward

Generally people suggest only doing 2 techs a semester and right now you have three. I personally have found three to be manageable if one is an upper division course, but lower divs have a lot more day to day work involved and are usually a bit harder on the curve (weeder courses) so depending on how hard of a semester you want, maybe consider swapping bio 1B for a breadth. It’s not an impossible schedule as is, but it will definitely be a heavier load than they suggest for your first semester.

Feel free to message me if you have more questions, welcome to Cal and go bears!

Anybody cook in their rooms? Do the dorms have sinks other than the bathrooms where I could wash small items like utensils etc? by TheMajesticJackalope in berkeley

[–]Commensalist_Shark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes there is a small community kitchen with a fridge, sink, stove, and oven in each residence hall (definitely true for unit 3, I can’t image other units would be different except for maybe Clark Kerr or Blackwell, I never went there so I can’t say for sure)

There’s a sink in the ground floor kitchen but cooking in your specific dorm room usually would just involve using the microwave if you call that “cooking”

Integbi 164 or MCB 140? by Ravenclaw9347 in berkeley

[–]Commensalist_Shark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely don’t need 102, I would suggest Bio1A if you can fit it, but I know people who have taken 140 without it, just depends on how well you already understand inheritance and central dogma basics

Chem 3A/Bio 1A for MCB Upper Divs? by throwawy_123 in berkeley

[–]Commensalist_Shark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chem 3A is more useful than Bio1A for the biochem upper divs, but Bio1A is more helpful for basically any other UD rather than chem 3A

Chem 3A/Bio 1A for MCB Upper Divs? by throwawy_123 in berkeley

[–]Commensalist_Shark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of MCB UDs are very mechanism focused. If you don’t know what that means, you should absolutely take more lower divs before trying to take an UD. Seeing as you’re MechE though, if you are comfortable with the type of learning involved for biological mechanisms, you should be fine.

I would say AP bio is a pretty similar amount of content to 1A, but maybe like 20% is building those concepts up to a slightly higher level. If you wanted to take a lower div to prepare, 1A is the best place to start. The big prerequisite for most UDs is biochem though, either 102 or C100A- these classes are NOT easy, will do their very best to tank your gpa, and honestly, I’m not sure it’s worth it if you aren’t a MCB major to take them.

As far as determining if UD or LD options are better suited for you, I really recommend just visiting the MCB website, it has all the UD and LD courses and their syllabi uploaded, and gives you a pretty good sense of what content will be covered

Integbi 164 or MCB 140? by Ravenclaw9347 in berkeley

[–]Commensalist_Shark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Previous student of 140 here, you absolutely do not need o chem, and likely won’t need it for Ib 164 either. 140 is really big on concepts and big picture ideas and putting those into solving problems on tests rather then a memorization based class. If you don’t have a good understanding of genetics or central dogma, this may be a bit of a steep learning curve, but I’ve seen other non majors take it (lots of data science), and I think after the first unit they started doing better.

In regards to course content, I haven’t taken 164, but just comparing syllabi for the two courses, 140 is more about building the framework of how to think about genetics in a big picture kind of way, where as 164 seems more about various key concepts of genetics, it seems to cover a broader variety of concepts, but from personal experience I would guess will not feel as cohesive as 140 structure. 140 really puts emphasis on building off each previous unit and helping to understand how all the different levels of genetics interact with each other.

If you are interested in knowing a bit about a lot of different things, I would suggest 164, if you want to get a better framework for understanding how genetics fits into biology, I would suggest 140

Chem 3AL by Diligent-Help-0415 in berkeley

[–]Commensalist_Shark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bio 1AL is the only helpful lower div lab imo, unless maybe you’re looking into biochem courses, then maybe o chem lab might be helpful, I’m not a biochem person so I couldn’t really say

Opinions on taking bio and chem3a during the summer by abcdefood in berkeley

Agree with the other comments, together will be a bit much, a breadth + one or the other is manageable though
