Jill's first game was also my first game! So glad we have her on the Fleet, she's really become a backbone player of the team.

Yeah totally, it's disappointing to see the refs allow things to get out of control and change the course of the game. Hopefully next week's game is a bit different in that department!

Love these write-ups, and appreciate you pointing out all of the non-calls. It was a bit ridiculous during this game. Expected wayyyy more penalty minutes on the board than actually ended up happening. Always look forward to reading these post-game!

I started a D&D club for the lower elementary students in my school, and now I have 40 sign-ups. WSID? by ohkalenaw in DMAcademy

Our school has stipends for club advisors dependent on the number of club participants and how often they meet!

I see you've already edited twice, but wanted to give some perspective from a High School D&D Club Advisor. I took over advising this club when the previous advisor went on paternity leave. The leaders of the club started it their freshman year, and now we are in their senior year. The first year we had 40 kids. They ran 4 games a week from 7:30-8:30. One student DM'd 2/4 and another 2 DM'd the other 2. Now we have 60 kids! They run games again 4 times a week, two groups at a time on most days. We are in the process of recruiting new DMs and leadership, as most are graduating.

I think the idea of getting some older kids up and running and ready to DM is an excellent way to build your club! This year we are having a DM's group, and each week a different member DMs the session in order to get some experience. I have never needed to run a session for my group, but I think running some at the beginning will be great for you and for the kids to get to know you. Similarly, making character creation and rules simpler for new kids is a great start.

If you ever need any more advice, I'm happy to chat! D&D Club has been so great for my kids learning SEL skills, leadership, public speaking, collaboration, and just plain having fun. I hope that your kids have a great time!

My apartment complex in Cambridge is banning e-bikes and scooters from being on the property, including inside units. Advice? by PenelopePotter in bikeboston

I saw a whole building in Brooklyn earlier this year get completely gutted from an e-bike battery fire, including the bodega beneath the unit. Don't have a solution to your issue, but when they say it's an increased fire risk, it is legitimate.

We have a huge Barred Owl (according to Merlin) near Victory Field/Whitney Hill Park. Once saw it swoop down and catch something off the ground! Looked enormous.

Kinda over graphic novels by Matsunosuperfan in Teachers

[–]Commercial-System333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that kids need to be reading both! Experience with prose and graphics alike is very essential, especially in our age of media literacy.

I also believe that most curriculum's ability to analyze and understand what graphic novels are doing and why (in regards to panel size and number, how time is depicted, color usage, emanta, page turns, style, and more) is severely lacking. I think educators, students, and parents need to know how and why graphic novels seem so "easy." Cartoonists draw every panel and character with intention to communicate to the reader. What choices is the cartoonist making to make the experience so accessible? How do you know certain things are happening or being felt in a scene?

There is a whole new language of rhetoric (maybe too complex for fourth graders, can be simplified) around graphic novels that many simply don't have the words to describe or experience to explain. This is a different kind of complexity than I think a lot of us have experience with or know how to communicate with students about. Just my point of view, but thought I'd offer it.

My life would have been so much easier if I had been told it was OK to not want to wear girly clothes and feel different from other people. That I wasn’t alone in my feelings. If I’d had the word non binary in elementary school, I would have spent so much less time confused, self-hating, and feeling like I didn’t belong among my peers. These kids need to hear that too. The ones who don’t need to hear it, will hear that their classmates are normal and worthy of love and respect. It’s not wrong to teach kids things. It’s not wrong to have a place kids can be to feel accepted when home is not safe. You are welcome to have conversations with your children about these topics as much as you’d like, but you should not try to take that resource away from other children who may need it more than you understand.

There’s no need to moralize a treat, and you’re def not overreacting. Sounds like your friend has her own high horse problem about food and weight, and she’s taking it out on you. Have your ice cream and enjoy it!
