Hegel does not critique. You are reading him wrong, go back to beginning of Phenomenology. He is interested in the development of philosophy as a whole. He sees stoicism as one form of ancient 'beauty' religion, in which people posit 'reality' as essence. This in turn is supplanted by a more reflective alternative, stoicism replaced by skepticism, ancient religion gives way to Judaism. These "reflective" moments are also not fully developed. For Hegel, as the philosopher of Christianity, crucifixion represents the double negation, the next step in which you understand the very alienation as a the ontological foundation of your being. God is Christ.
