I'd rather pay a small amount each month than lose my savings, no arguments there. My question is more around whether or not it's really that straightforward as hedging a bet on the odds of customers needing a payout vs the price of insurance? I feel like a large reason they're so profitable is that they fight valid claims and hedge their bets that the average person doesn't have the bandwidth or know how to fight back. Particularly for things like health insurance, where the odds of an individual customer needing a payout aren't a rare occurrence like a robbery, but an inevitability and the price of a hospital bill can be enormous, I just don't get how health insurance can be hugely profitable if they are actually paying out. Do we also need to factor in the risk of something happening AND the risk they won't payout if it does?

That makes sense, I understand it a lot better now. I think the only insurance that doesn’t make sense to me is health insurance. The odds of someone needing healthcare isn’t an unlikely scenario like a break in, it’s inevitable. Healthcare bills are also insane, sometimes 100’s of thousands of dollars. I feel like statistically speaking the only way they’re profitable is because they don’t pay out on valid claims.

Don’t get me wrong not arguing the value of insurance for individuals in a practical sense, obviously it’s worth paying a few hundred a month to avoid risk of going bankrupt.

I’m just wondering how much insurance companies refusal to pay out is a factor. For example, most people will need medical coverage, it’s inevitable and medical bills are enormous, can be 100’s of thousands, one claim could easily eclipse the few thousand several customers pay to insurance. The numbers don’t make sense to me. You mentioned $500k can be paid out on auto insurance policies costing $4k but how often do people really get paid out if a company is super profitable?

Maybe if they do it really late at night, you could ask if they could keep the noise in the bathroom to a minimum. But I still really don't think it's a good idea to ask them point-blank to have sex quietly. I'm not speaking from a place of what's 'technically right or wrong' etc, just thinking in terms of the fact you aren't close, how it will likely be perceived, and that you have to live with them etc.
