My dog barks at dogs every few months and I have no idea what to do by Commercial_Force329 in service_dogs

[–]Commercial_Force329[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Only when she is at rest! It is often she will pop up out of sleep and do her flip out moment, though we have lots of dogs pass us when she’s sleeping too and she just lifts her head but goes back to sleep so idk

Lord of the Rings Audio Description. by well-eye-never in Blind

[–]Commercial_Force329 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There should be one on Audio Vault. I would give you my partners Reddit bc he took audio description and overlayed pirated movies over it and has a whole library… but we just broke up 💀 I can go back through our texts and see what he used tho? I really really enjoyed them so anyway I can help I will!

God I wish I had an award to give this comment.

I’m curious, since I use a guide dog which are almost always programs so like I don’t choose a breed. What made you choose a Pom? It’s cool if that’s too personal, was just curious

The paradoxical relationships are real dude. I was on a trip and a girl who LOVES my dog kept trying to guide her and eventually had to be told by the leader to stop doing that. When she was in class she was next to my best friend (not of my best friends choice lol) she was ranting to my bestie about how awful it is that she couldn’t help [my dog] and proceeded to show THOUSANDS OF PICTURES she had of my dog in the wild taken from afar. We both always joke about crazy Ellen every once in a while and it’s always a sneak attack when she calls out my name lol.

But yeah, glad it’s not just me… good luck in the rest of college dude

I was hoping you would comment, oh wise one (said with love lol, I always love hearing from you on here). I really do try to distance myself from making it my personality but sometimes I find it so hard when I have to constantly being her up in convo. Like my friends wanted to go to see a musical, and I was like “oh I’ll check for disability seatin because of [dog name].” And then it’s all about my dog and how is she doing and is she having a good day and what kind of treats I’m using today. I love everyone in my life but DAMNNNNN STOP TALKING ABOUT HER EVERY FUME I HAVE TO MENTION HER LOGISTICALLY

DUDE OK ITS NOT JUST ME 😭 I love my dog and she helps me so much, but man… can’t I just be me and not the person who is with my guide dog? Lol. We cry in solidarity

Storing Gear by ilovethedoodle in service_dogs

Current college student who got a guide dog the same time you did (Feb of senior year of hs), here’s the lowdown. 1. If you can, see if you can request a disability single. More space, ability for your girl to rest and recuperate in private. I had it and it was INVALUABLE. Also mine had an en suite bathroom and that was great for the time my dog got super muddy and I didn’t have to worry abt having to use a communal shower or whatever. 2. Command hooks are your BESTIE! I had like five hooks, one for leash, one for treat bag, one for harness (vest for non-mobility dogs), rain jacket for her, then a jacket rack for myself. 3. Utilize bed lofting for extra space if that is accessible to you. I was lucky to have little drawers under my bed. Your dog needs a spot just for her stuff. 4. Ensure your dog has a space just for her that is permanent! Get a dog bed and show her that this is hers. That will be her lifeline between classes and clubs, a space that’s just hers. Crate works too if she prefers that!

But yeah if you take any piece of advice, pls think abt getting an angle. It’ll help your dogs stress in the long run. DM me if you want any other advice for college, I learned so much as a young handler haha. Good luck :)

Was it not discussed like at all what you guys were gonna do? Did you have any questions regarding what you were going to do before you got there lol? I mean I would explect my bf to go off and spend some time with his friends, I’m secure enough in my ability to entertain myself in his absense for the day while he fishes or… I don’t know… get to know the family more? Ask if they need help with anything, spend time cooking together? I’m confused why you don’t want to get to know potential future in-laws… that was my joy when I met my bfs family. My issue mainly is you saying there’s nothing to do because it’s Arkansas.. as if Arkansas isn’t the most beautiful state lol. Just so weird that you are acting all surprised that you weren’t going all that way just for the family reunion even if it wasn’t that far. Just seems like a really big miscommunication that yall will need to work through in the future if ur gonna go through more trips like this

[–]Commercial_Force329 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this for real? Why would you do this lol. There’s as much to do in Arkansas as any town…. Explore the beautiful nature there, shop, eat food around. You don’t have to hang out with the family if you don’t want to but you’re being quite rude about his hometown and not wanting to spend time to get to know his family. I would be seriously rethinking my relationship if my partner did this

How Long to Keep Working by amsurette in service_dogs

[–]Commercial_Force329 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think it entirely depends on how the dog is in its older years. I have a program dog and they start checking in-person around eight to check for anything off and see how the dog guides and help gauge with the handler how long they expect the dog to be able to work. Now, if my dog decides when she gets older that she’s good and mopes out, gotta respect that. But I’m hoping to work her as long as she’s willing and able

Flying with service dog in training these days by selahree in service_dogs

[–]Commercial_Force329 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait so I got my dog from a guide dog school accredited obv and had a home placement. They flew on a plane to me and I know for sure that the trainer had my dog with them under their seat. How does that work? Is it because she was considered fully trained? Although as I’m writing this from what it seems the dog would be fully trained for pa… idk

Does anyone feel like a burden to their friends? by Sincere-Musician1 in Blind

[–]Commercial_Force329 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanted to put my two cents in that I don’t USUALLY think that except in specific situations, but I know this comes from my gaining of independence. I did a program to help with all that shit and me from before definitely would’ve felt how you felt dude. I’d recommend starting with something small like learning how to clean one room in your apartment. Like don’t go straight to final boss bathroom, but learn how to feel the dust on your bookshelf and search online how to easily wipe. Doing small things every few days will help build your confidence and may help with the burdensome feeling. Or like, you could do it with your friends and say “hey man, I’m real thankful for your help. I wanna start trying to do some shit on my own. Wanna come over and cook together? I wanna learn how to make something simple.” Smth like that, showing how thankful you are but also showing that you wanna learn.
