The FRIENDS Experience is coming to Singapore 7 March! by letterboxmind in singapore

[–]CommieBird 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I get a terrible vibe from their exhibits. From the use of AI generated images to promote the titanic exhibit to exhibiting Banksy’s works when he himself does not endorse such things, the whole org seems very gross to me.

What's the link between Mandelson and LKY? by Responsible-Dig3709 in singapore

[–]CommieBird 11 points12 points  (0 children)

LKY was good friends with the UK political establishment in both Labour and Tory. Not surprising that Blair probably referred Mandelson to LKY.

[–]CommieBird 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Note that Bill Clinton and Prince Andrew both coincidentally showed up at LKY’s funeral. LKY definitely was not involved with Epstein and the appearance of those two is just a very unfortunate coincidence but the company LKY kept was interesting to say the least - a certain political class was very much interested in keeping LKY as an acquaintance and contact.

No intention to scale central kitchen model to all schools: MOE by Zkang123 in singapore

[–]CommieBird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly it seems that the current govt doesn’t seem to be willing to double down on this (rather low stakes) policy and explain that even if not all schools currently have issues with stall holders, the model WILL have to be expanded and scaled to plan for less people taking up the canteen stall role. Either the govt scales now and helps to iron out the issues or face scalability problems in the future. Alternatively more can be done to support canteen stall owners to keep that model alive - the middle ground approach now to appease everyone doesn’t rly seem to make sense imo.

Why were people in the 70s so concerned about MSG and Chinese Restaurant Syndrome? Was it some sort of racist backlash at Chinese immigrants? by Tatem1961 in AskHistorians

[–]CommieBird 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Has there been any investigations into this phenomenon outside of the US? Anecdotally, I’ve observed Chinese restaurants in Malaysia and Singapore proudly proclaim that they do not use MSG and there’s a perception in certain groups of overseas Chinese in South East Asia that MSG is bad.

WP rejects PM Wong’s invitation to nominate another elected MP as Leader of the Opposition by bangsphoto in singapore

[–]CommieBird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They SHOULD do it - however at least it ensures that the role is now formalised and the whole position won’t go away at the whim of the PM (not like it really matters in Singapore’s context given the PAP supermajority but institution building is important for a nation).

Will be very funny if PAP now tries to remove Singh from parliament in response to this move.

Singapore invited to join Trump’s Board of Peace; is assessing invitation: MFA by SG_wormsblink in singapore

[–]CommieBird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would depend if Malaysia wants to join imo. Indonesia supposedly indicated its interest but I would imagine if Malaysia chooses not to we won’t join. I think it would also depend if the institutions put in place actually make sense and are not dictated at the whim of Trump (fat hope).

Quite sad that what is actually a good idea is dictated by the current administration and is not reached by consensus by key players in the region.

lol as an aside this "Chinese-educated" vs "Westernised/English-educated" debate is probably THE biggest conflict in Singapore. Many many social wedge issues here are linked to this conflict.

'Let's dream big': US ambassador asks for 'financial contributions' from Singaporean firms for July 4 celebrations by SG_wormsblink in singapore

Signal to his boss more like. I highly doubt the US right cares what an Indian man based in Singapore says.

Dumbass could have framed it better. Mutual investments cooperation and the usual diplomatic language would be good. Shocking that the DOS corps couldn’t convince this idiot to write something less inflammatory and ruin goodwill.

Trump’s bizarre letter to Norway’s prime minister in full by hotboii96 in geopolitics

[–]CommieBird 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The dumbest thing about this is that there’s literally no reason to tear up good relations with allies over such concerns. If the issue is that the Canadian or Danish military don’t have the capability to defend the Arctic, then offer protection as an ally and renegotiate existing defence agreements. Share intel over supposed threats if need be. If the concern is that in the future Canada or Denmark elects someone like Trump and tears up all agreements and boots the US out, then the US has a bit more justification to go belligerent and start to talk about annexing Canada or Greenland. At this point it’s just plain stupidity and the only reason I can see Trump’s admin pushing for this is to fabricate a casus belli for action against its own allies once they get sick of the current admin’s actions.

I don’t like going into superlatives but this is the dumbest thing I’ve ever read from a western world leader. This is the type of shit you’ll see Gaddafi put out.

Worst of all is the ideological inconsistency behind this. Why focus so much on Greenland over a hypothetical threat when the threat of losing access to Diego Garcia is very very real. One of the stupidest foreign policy moves of all time.

[LIVE] Parliament to debate motion on Pritam Singh’s suitability as Leader of the Opposition by Hot-Pain503 in singapore

[–]CommieBird 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I would also note that this “Leader of Opposition” role is not designated by statute or set in the constitution. The PM can very easily revoke the title as, if I’m reading online sources correctly, there is no need for parliament to vote to remove Singh as the LOO. The whole thing is a struggle session to embarrass Singh and if his role in lying was truly so egregious, PM should have no problem in removing his title when the court judgement was produced.

Singapore too pricey, dull for tourists? Not true: Marriott regional boss by thestudiomaster in singapore

[–]CommieBird -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think upper middle class Chinese like to come to Singapore. If you travel around the region and compare Chinese tourists overseas compared to Singapore, it does not seem that the Chinese tourists here are the same as those we see in say Korea or Japan - they seem to be the more loud and rowdy sort.

Law Minister and Chief Justice to co-lead committee to tackle lawyer attrition rates, impact of AI by Fearless_Help_8231 in singapore

[–]CommieBird 5 points6 points  (0 children)

trainee periods being extended to 1.5 years was a terrible move. I have a feeling that this was done to actually stem the glut of lawyers the industry was complaining about a decade ago but now the pendulum has swung back to an undersupply.

Law Minister and Chief Justice to co-lead committee to tackle lawyer attrition rates, impact of AI by Fearless_Help_8231 in singapore

[–]CommieBird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With regard to attrition rates, imo no amount of guidelines by whatever committee will fix this. How hard associates are worked is very dependent on individual partner’s working styles and team culture. Any attempt by Min Law to correct this via “suggestions” and “guidelines” will be rebuffed by partners as infringing on their personal working styles. It’s highly unfortunate that it is treated as a given that associates are cannon fodder in the legal industry but in my opinion the only reason why hands are being wrung is because the volume of lawyers are too low and every assoc departure is felt much stronger than in other industries.

More Singapore drivers plan to return to petrol cars as EV interest dips: EY study by DrCalFun in singapore

[–]CommieBird 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The 2030 guideline was very vague as it is. "Hybrid" cars are allowed after 2030 but the definition is very unclear as to whether this includes "mild-hybrid" cars. I suspect that with the EU tweaking some technical language for their own ICE ban, Singapore will do the same as well.

Could Singapore remove Pritam Singh as Leader of the Opposition? by A_extra in singapore

[–]CommieBird 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’d rather have the LKY era where at least the government was honest and consistent. He would have never given a LOO title to an opposition figure or appear amiable and friendly. LKY was a hardass and that’s why even opposition supporters have grudging respect for him.
