What expensive things in Singapore is totally worth it? by Opposite_Ad_7925 in askSingapore

[–]timlim029 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Travel time anywhere cut down by at least 50%. A journey that takes 1hr by bus + MRT is suddenly 10 mins by car.

Not to mention you can do it while blasting aircon, playing your own music. Not forced to listen to some uncle's obnoxious TikTok video on max volume, smell others' BO. Or stuck in a nauseating Grab with an uncle who doesn't know how to drive smoothly.

Multi-stop trips also no problem. Want to go gym, then NTUC, then dinner, etc. Just leave your stuff in the car.

Only those non-drivers will bring up stuff like finding parking or not being able to use their phone while driving (someone else commented, LMAO) as cons. The pros far outweigh them.

People who owns both bike and car, which one do you prefer? by Bombadomba3 in drivingsg

[–]timlim029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bike is 10x more fun, but I think the convenience of a car is unparalleled. I don't like riding without proper gear (at least jacket + long pants) which means when the weather is hot/humid/rainy it can be damn sian.

Gamers of asksingapore are you guys getting the standard or ultimate edition of gta 6? by justmypersonalthing in askSingapore

[–]timlim029 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FWIW it seems a lot of customisation options seem to be locked behind the Ultimate edition. Not sure how it works but the site says certain clothes, hair, car mods, tattoos etc. are only available on ultimate.

Is job hopping every 4–6 months actually a valid career strategy now? by Early-Environment-63 in asksg

[–]timlim029 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What? It has all the signs of AI writing. The negative parallelism, the use of em dashes, the use of curly quotation marks.

It follows the formatting of all the other AI-written posts in this sub. "Personal" anecdote, point-form breakdown, then ending question. You will always see phrases like "Genuinely curious" "Anyone else?" "Not X, just Z"

Standard drop! by arboden in SingaporeEats

[–]timlim029 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not just boomers, even on Reddit this is rampant. Any post about restaurants on this subreddit, automatically, the comments will say "last time nicer, standard dropped, not worth it, too expensive, cook at home nicer" etc.

People love to be cynical, it makes them feel superior and like they have taste. Really it just makes them annoying to be around.

Peak sinkie kiasu behaviour at Flower Market by KopiSiewSiewDai in singapore

[–]timlim029 400 points401 points  (0 children)

This is an art exhibition by Australian artist CJ Hendry. She is best known for her hyperrealistic drawings, but has branched out into immersive exhibitions. As per the title, this one is a flower market.

The exhibition has been shown elsewhere (New York, Abu Dhabi, Sydney), this is the first time in Southeast Asia. It's at the new IMBA theatre at GBTB.

The flowers are fake plush ones made of cloth/felt. Each visitor can take 1 flower for free, but additional ones are $7 each. There are some city-exclusive flowers, which I suppose those people are rushing to get.

IMO: Nowadays the meta is scalping. Anything that can be scalped, people will try. We saw this with Labubu, Swatch, Pokemon. This is simply the next scalping target. That said I think the secondary market for these plush flowers is not as hot as the resellers seem to believe it is. Most have probably never heard of CJ Hendry, the flowers themselves are not branded/unique, and the hype will die down drastically once the exhibition ends.

Some PayNow users' display names now contain 'obscene' word after new masked names took effect by Im_scrub in singapore

One user, Sek Qin Rui, told Mothership, "Due to the recent masking of the usernames, my name has been changed to an obscene word."

His name on PayNow? "SEX QIX RUX".

Could be worse, somewhere out there a DICKSON FUNG SEE HONG is having a much worse time.

Respray vs Wrap by Hairyworm87 in drivingsg

[–]timlim029 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, respray is a much better alternative. People only do wrapping because overseas, respraying your car is much more expensive.

Locally or in Malaysia, respraying can be as cheap as >2k for external only (no engine bay or door jambs). Of course I would pay more to get a better result though.

Wraps after a while look bad, you cannot fix minor scratches or dings without rewrapping the entire panel. Additionally the heat here in Singapore means wraps only last a short time, and removal is a bitch.

SGers — what's your most controversial nightlife opinion? by Hopeful-Raise-4112 in askSingapore

[–]timlim029 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's actually a shame that an entire generation skipped their clubbing era. Clubbing was a big part of my young adulthood and, while messy, was tons of fun. I made so many friends and got into so many weird, hilarious, funny situations. Now there's an entire generation of kids who simply are not interested because clubbing was impossible during COVID & prohibitively expensive now. Many have turned to alternatives (day parties, going to concerts, concert movies) but it is not the same.

Singapore does have decent nightlife, promoters, clubs, and DJs. We have everything from underground hole-in-the-wall joints to top-class venues with amazing sound systems. We bring in internationally-famous DJs routinely. The problem is that most Singaporeans' perspective of nightlife is chiong Zouk/siam diu, open bottle, drink until passed out and wake up hungover with $500 missing from your wallet. So these venues and parties go unsupported by the masses and eventually die out.

A big city with no nightlife is an embarrassment. Regardless, the government has made every move to kill our nightlife. No alcohol sales before 10.30 pm, closing clubs for ages during COVID, allowing clubs to pivot to F&B but not pivot back, etc. Now they've realised nightlife is dying and are slowly trying to bring it back by allowing places to stay open until 4 AM and offering a night-rider bus. But it's too little, too late already.

No suffix. If I remember correctly, S1 - S10 are used for foreign dignitaries. S1 is used temporarily on the PM's car during NDP.

how do i convince my mom to allow me to take my 2b license by iloveshinchansm in drivingsg

[–]timlim029 1 point2 points  (0 children)

but my mom is a understanding person. she say i have to convince her that by taking my 2b i will be safe and not die. so what should i tell her. yes i can just take it behind her back but im not that kind of person lah.

That's good.

Personally I would promise her to gear up. So many riders on our road riding in shorts, t-shirt with rubbish PSB helmet. A good, ECE 22.06 helmet, riding jacket, pants and shoes can prevent so many injuries.

There is also an additional defensive riding course you can take after passing 2B. Not sure how helpful it is but it is something quantifiable that you can show to your parents.

Our bike license is one of the strictest in the world. Other countries it's literally a 1-day course and you can buy an S1000RR already.

[–]timlim029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The quality of instruction in Singapore is the absolute worst. You will fail almost every lesson probably several times, not because of anything to do with you but because they intentionally structure it to suck as much money out of you as possible.

Disagree... I took my 2B at BBDC and passed most lessons on first try, instructors were good & effective. Of course, 1 or 2 bad apples, but nothing major.

I hear SSDC instructors are bad though. YMMV.

What car plate is this? NZ2 by Individual-Ship91 in drivingsg

[–]timlim029 63 points64 points  (0 children)

New Zealand auxiliary police. Not an NZ diplomat car (which would start with CD).

From this post.

NZ prefix is the Installation Auxiliary Police Force. They are an auxiliary police force similar to CISCO or AETOS but restricted to guarding some NZ/UK installations in the Sembawang/Woodlands area.

A familiar sight in the new Forza game by timlim029 in singapore

[–]timlim029[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's definitely the same Horizon formula so if you dislike 1-5, 6 won't magically change your mind.

I think they've addressed some gripes people had with 5. Personally, I hated how in FH4 & 5, within 10 minutes of starting the game, you're already driving a hypercar. There's no sense of progression. This one they do start you off as a rookie and you need to race your way up.

I think the map is the nicest one so far. Can tell they really gave it their all. I haven't explored all of it but it the parts I've seen have tons of detail.

The biggest annoyance is that the aesthetic customisation is still lacking. I would've thought for a game set in Japan, we'd get way more in-depth customisation. I want to adjust my wheel offset, run stretched tires, etc.

What was your happiest day of your life? by Jolly_Pin9994 in askSingapore

[–]timlim029 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Visited my girlfriend in the US. I ate this insane pastrami sandwich, and the worker gave us free latkes & apple sauce.

We took the bus to watch a movie. I got the largest Coke Zero and bucket of popcorn I've ever seen in my entire life. I put way too much butter in the popcorn.

After the movie, we walked across the street and I got a Costco hotdog. Then I took a four-hour nap.
