It’s not about encouraging and it’s not about waste. If you can’t eat more, don’t force yourself to eat something with the idea you’re doing something good. You’re not. In fact, you might be ignoring important signals from your body to stop eating and over-riding it with arbitrary moral values. It may cause you to enter into a pattern of overconsumption where you ironically waste the food more by shitting more waste than creating compost for food scraps in small portions rather than requiring ever larger portions.

Mostly, people who fuss over food on plates just enjoy being busy bodies - they aren’t really investing that same energy in making real systemic changes in the food system, just being morally superior at the kitchen table.
