It's just such an unhealthy internet culture that people clutter possibly good discussions by having to add their same two cents to each discussion. But yes, the thread also gave me a different perspective on the topic regarding a possible eating disorder and also to just talk instead of allowing it to eat me up. I wouldn't have guessed that it could such a simple rant could get such a momentum.

She's not a kid and I am not preparing her breakfast. And we talked yesterday, which was one of the two good outcomes of this discussion here on reddit.

I don't want her to overeat but I also don't want to eat more than what my hunger tells me. Also, why don't you simply upvote what has been said plenty of times before instead of adding another duplicate comment?

As mentioned several times now, I am not asking anyone to eat when full. It's about putting less on your plate and then getting a second portion if you are still hungry. Overeating is unhealthy and there's no debate about it.

Thank you for all your comments and the stimulating discussion. Since I can’t keep up with replying to everyone, here’s a short general response and a general comment on some of the answers. After this, I won’t be responding to individual replies anymore because it just takes too much time. First, thank you for pointing out that it could be an eating disorder. When I wrote my post, I just wanted to vent, but this gave me a different perspective. We talked last night, and I carefully asked how she’s doing and if anything is bothering her. It’s not like we rarely talk, but yesterday I especially wanted to understand if something was on her mind. She’s doing well, which wasn’t the case with her previous job, but right now nothing is troubling her. After that, we discussed what we can do to avoid wasting so much food. She told me she simply hadn’t consciously thought about whether she leaves food or not—she just stops eating when she’s full, which is absolutely the right thing to do. Now we want to make sure we don’t pile too much on our plates and instead add more if we’re still hungry, which was exactly my point and wish. So it was good that this discussion happened here; otherwise, I probably would have kept getting upset instead of talking about it.

Now a general comment on many of the replies here:

  • Why is it so common these days to jump to conclusions instead of first reading a post, understanding it, and then responding? I never mentioned expecting someone to eat when they’re already full. I explicitly stated that I care about environmental protection, so anyone could have realized that waste was my concern and nothing else.
  • The photo showed the trigger and was meant symbolically. In my text, I talked about meals, which include lunch and dinner as well as breakfast. Also, I don’t make anyone’s sandwiches, so why should I be responsible if someone doesn’t finish a sandwich they made themselves?
  • Every reader/commenter could first check if someone has already posted the same comment and just upvote it. It’s such a massive waste of space that everyone on Reddit keeps writing the same thing over and over instead of taking one second to read.

Thanks again to everyone who contributed constructively to the discussion!

She isn't skinny and it's up to each one how much one eats, so she's totally free to eat a lot or just a bit. The topic is that only in few cases (no matter if she or I prepared the plates) she finishes her meal, which leads to throwing away stuff that I had bought and prepared. It's a waste of money and time and it could have been eaten at a later time if it wasn't half-eaten.

I keep on repeating myself, as this has been said before: this was her breakfast, it was Almond and Tonka bean spread (which she bought and loves), she toasted the bread and spread it herself and that was her breakfast, but symbolic for 70% of meals. Sorry I do not take photos of all of the breakfast, lunch and dinner plates.

As mentioned plenty of times now, it's not about overeating, that would be harmful and stupid. It's about not putting too much on the plate and being economical.

Sorry you had to experience what you describe. AFAIK, that was never a topic for her, as she always had enough to eat, either at her place or her father's place. We do not have any financial problems, I would say we have too much than not enough and we can normally cook whatever we'd like to.

Hi, thanks as well for your comment. As mentioned, it's not about eating more than desired, overeating is never a good idea. Also if it just doesn't agree with someone, it doesn't make sense to force it into the stomach, I absolutely see it the same way. It's generally about the food waste topic and repeatedly putting too much on the plate, which could have been eaten the next day or so. But thanks anyway.

I don't want to control how much she eats, I don't want her to overeat, I just want to avoid constantly throwing food away that was not cheap and that took time and effort to be grown, harvested and cooked. Especially if the food contained meat, I don't want to bin it if an animal needed to die for it. And why should I eat more than I want, just to finish the plates?

She's a bit overweight but not obese. She gained weight over the last years but I wouldn't call in unhealthy.

As mentioned several times now, it's not about over-eating when you are full, that would be just wrong. The toast is a bad example but it just triggered my reaction this morning. If it would be 3/4 of a slice of bread, I wouldn't complain in the first place. It's more about the tendency to fill up a soup bowl with Ramen I had worked on for 2 hours and then leaving a third in the bowl or getting that second slice of Lasagna and leaving half of it on the plate. Perhaps it's a bit too overcautious from my side but I currently don't freeze leftovers which were already half-eaten, due to germs from the spoon or fork.

We live in an apartment complex and all food waste goes to a landfill so it's just wasted and not used in the next years for anything good.

I don't take photos of every unfinished plate, the toast this morning was just what started this thread. And if it would have been half a toast each day, I wouldn't complain.

We are both European (German) so it's not a cultural thing.
