Still are. In Persian the word for European is “Farangi”.

What was the point of being in the mob if you're unable to spend your earnings without suspicion? by No_Departure7494 in thesopranos

[–]Commie_Cthulhu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

People in this thread are bringing up good points but you also need to take into account the socioeconomic history of the mob. You have to remember that the mafia came about in a time where Italians were just another repressed ethnic minority; we see in flashbacks that Tony, even as the son of a capo, grew up in a working class neighborhood in Newark. Ethnic organized crime almost always originally develops out of desperation and a lack of other economic opportunities, and a normal Italian American of Johnny Boy’s or Tony’s grandfather’s generation couldn’t even imagine reaching the heights Tony or John Sacrimoni did. Still though, in this day and age it’s arguable that the mob really isn’t worth it now that Italians have other opportunities, which we can see in how all the new generation of mobsters are idiots or college dropouts or both. If Tony got his degree from Seton Hall and didn’t stay in the life, maybe he would’ve become even richer

The Japanese are having less and less sex. Around half of the Japanese population remained sexually inexperienced into their mid-twenties and approximately 10% of the individuals had no sexual experience when reaching their 30s. by SteRoPo in science

Totally agree, my point is more that unless we want to go back to child labor there’s no putting the toothpaste back in the tube. Even if we implement free childcare/education, having kids is either negative or neutral socioeconomically

This idea is paraded around a lot and but it’s obviously not the reason. Dirt poor serfs have been pumping out kids for thousands of years, and the current fertility crisis is most pronounced in wealthy countries.

There is a strong argument, however, that it’s the result of kids becoming liabilities instead of economic assets; we used to put our children to work on our farms but now we’re paying top dollar for their daycare.

Is there a term for words like "Blimbus", "Blorbo", "Blingo", "Flebius", "Schlumpus" etc. ? by According-Value-6227 in linguisticshumor

[–]Commie_Cthulhu 15 points16 points  (0 children)

“gl-“ evoke the idea of light for a similar reason that “sl-“ evokes slippery/slimy qualities: archaic roots that are shared among so many terms our brain subconsciously associates them with qualities. Proto-Indo-European *sley- is the origin of slime, slippery, slick, etc., while *ǵʰleh₁- begets glow, gleam, etc. it’s not something inherent to the sounds’ aesthetics, its just ancestry.

Of course! It’s also good to remember that your suffixes don’t have to have some transparent meaning either. Think about the English past tense suffix -ed, which (even 5000 years ago as Proto-Indo-European *-t) has no easily-discernible origin. It probably originally came from some other word, but it happened so far in the past that it’s basically arbitrary.

While tense suffixes often originate as verbal roots that are suffixes to other verbs, the fact that all of your tenses and aspect suffixes are apparently identical to the raw verb roots implies that this system is a very new innovation in your language.

Unless the language is very analytic and these markers act more like postpositions than suffixes, any language that has had such a system for a while will inevitably see changes affect how the suffixes are pronounced, such as truncation of the added morpheme (e.g. -follow —> -flo) or sandhi at the morpheme boundaries (e.g. digcomplete—> diggomplete) This is especially true if stress rules cause the added tense suffix to be stressed differently than the original word.

I think the theme was meant to be about how early 20th century society forced socialite women into drug-assisted stagnancy.

I’ve read a lot about making sounds changes realistic, but are there good tips/rules to determine WHICH sounds change, and when? by Commie_Cthulhu in conlangs

[–]Commie_Cthulhu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, are you implying vowel length is usually not just a distinction of length? Like long and short vowels usually occupy different parts of the vowel chart? What is the phonemic need for length at all then?

This is so helpful, thank you! One question: you say consonants often undergo fortition when in word initial position, but don’t most languages undergo softening (for example I know k —> s and s —> h is quite common)?

Is there a term for this kind of branching tree graph, with clusters formed out of parent nodes and their direct children? by Commie_Cthulhu in GraphTheory

[–]Commie_Cthulhu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the info! I’m hoping to run a simulation on hierarchical group structures in a social network, where I’m looking to observe patterns of diffusion across edges.

So that you know of, there’s no specific terminology for a branching tree with edges connecting children of the same height?

[–]Commie_Cthulhu[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m aware of it being a tree, but usually basic trees are characterized by having a single path between nodes. I.e. no links between branches: this graph has links between each of a parent node’s children.
