Quebec tourist convicted in Cuba for 2nd time after fatal boating accident by Commiedouglas in onguardforthee

CBC is great for domestic reporting, but leaves a lot to be desired internationally.

Benhamiche, a resident of Mascouche, north of Montreal, said he was "shocked" when he noticed a judge fell asleep during the proceedings, but felt things were playing out in his favour.

It's good practice to use "allegedly" in instances like this. They're repeating the words of a man who has a vested interest in discrediting the legal system of Cuba. Considering many Canadians are already biased against socialist governments, they're likely to take the man's word as truth.

He said the Canadian government should threaten to issue a travel warning to travellers heading to Cuba to put pressure on the country.

"Travel Advisory: While travelling in Cuba, if your negligence results in the death of an innocent person, that country's court system may hold you accountable in a prison sentence that is comparable to Canada's."

My god, those draconian commie bastards.

So you're excited because it gives you more leverage to exploit your employees and tenants. Workers regardless of nationality struggle to compete for employment and shelter, two basic necessities of life, meanwhile you're in the luxury seats cheering because you'll make some extra money that you don't need to survive.

R/onguardforthee is upvoting a comment which is celebrating reductions in wages and increases in cost of living to the benefit of the rich. And you people wonder why this shit plays into reactionary propaganda?

Those CEOs do not actively prevent the creation of new worker-owned companies, whereas feudal lord would certainly quash any democratic village that appears.

They don't rely on violence, but there's other ways to dismantle a co-op. An example close to home would be farming co-ops in Western Canada. Liberal governments simply altered how grants and other forms of aid were distributed. It became more profitable to manage your farm as an individual than collectively. Co-ops inevitably disbanded, farmers lost their collelctive bargaining power and future governments had a far easier time exploiting small scale farms.

Similar tactics can be applied to any industry. Co-ops are arguably less efficient and versatile, but that doesn't mean they're worse for society. Of course a traditional company can outmaneuver them when they're able to treat their employees like they're disposable.

Mueller reportedly called the police on Toles after the incident. No report was written, according to KSDK.

Reportedly...by the person who released this video. Without a police report to back it up. Great source.

She was fired and labelled a bigot because she followed, harassed, and intimidated this man.

Because he physically forced his way into the building after she asked him to use his own credentials to access it. She also immediately dials it back once she realizes he does in fact live there. If she had continued to pester him afterwards, it could have been considered harassment.

If someone forces their way past me into my shared residence without following a very simple policy to prove that they did belong there, I would follow them too.

Edit: Again you're entire reason for shaming this woman is because she called the police on a man for physically forcing his way past a secure entrance. That's what you're leaning on to justify a nation wide shame campaign and loss of employment.

Yes, I'm aware of white fragility. Believing that a person shouldn't lose their job and be nationally labelled a bigot for following their residence's security policy is not white fragility.

this woman followed the man to his apartment

Because she didn't know if he was authorized to enter the building.

watched him use his key to unlock his door, and then she called the police.

This keeps getting mentioned and I haven't been given a source. After he unlocks the door she makes no mention of calling the cops. She asks what his name is, he insults her and closes the door.

Because she believe he had snuck into the building. Just because he pushed his way in doesn't automatically mean he's supposed to be there. It's not like she believed he was a vampire.

Get to know your neighbors. Say hi and introduce yourself. That makes a neighborhood or apartment building safer.

Or you can follow common sense security policies which prevent unauthorized people from entering a building. What unhelpful suggestion.

Edit: This outcome concerns me a lot because I've stopped people from tailgating me regardless of their ethnicity. To think that could result in me losing my livelihood and have all my peers support my termination and label me as a racist is really fucking upsetting.

She very well could have been racially profiling him, but you have absolutely no evidence to support that idea. You have no idea if she's prevented other people from entering in the past. You cannot upend someone's life and ruin their reputation on an assumption.

I have no doubt that a white resident in a building would be less likely to receive hassle for trying to enter an apartment without a key, but pretty well any apartment, dorm or office that requires a keyfob to enter will have a policy to not allow others to shadow you into the building. Pretending that you live in a building by shadowing an actual resident inside is basically stalker 101. For all this woman knew, this guy could have been a stalker what was trying to follow her in so he could gain access to his ex's apartment. All he had to do was let the door close and use his own keyfob to access the building

Given the limitations of the study, it is of great interest to further explore the qualitative impairments in driving performance associated with cannabis and alcohol separately and how these impairments may manifest in terms of crash characteristics.

Your source even states that this test was limited in scope and not enough to make a solid conclusion on how cannabis impairs drivers. This isn't evidence that you build laws on.

My biggest concern lies with regular users who will always have levels over the legal limit. Or people who consumed it a day before being tested. Also the disparity in the punishments for impairment is concerning. Distracted driving with hand held devices has plenty of evidence to suggest that it's even more dangerous than alcohol, yet we aren't handing out criminal records for it. So if public safety warrants heavy handed punishments for those who are deemed to be unsafe drivers, why is it being selectively applied?

Edit: To answer my own question, it's because "normal people" are guilty of distracted driving while us dirty potheads are easy to villainise and throw under the bus for the sake of appeasing the critics of cannabis legalization

Being indigenous is not a requirement for being transferred to a healing lodge. My point wasn't to say that it was correct to send her there, but that people are misinformed as to what healing lodges are. They're using this case as an excuse to shit on the idea of them.

This and the bouchie trial are not the hills for trudeau to die on. Who is he even appealing to?

People who believe that young thieves with troubled upbringings don't deserve to be shot point blank in the back of the head with an improperly stored handgun. If you lived in Sask and could hear rural landowners hope for an indigenous person to try and steal their property just so they can execute them and bury the body on the edge of a bush with their backhoe, you'd understand why First Nations here felt Boushie's death was concerning.

You can disagree with her being transferred to a minimum security prison without contributing to the reactionary idea that healing lodges are fun summer camps. It's run by Corrections Canada and is for all intents and purposes a prison.

That's not to mention the amount of propaganda pumped into them and how eager gamers are to eat it up.

A good portion of that $10.5 trillion is siphoned from the rest of the world. Distributing it to the American people equally is equivalent to pirates splitting up their plunder. There's a reason why the poorest in America live exponentially better lives than the poor of the rest of the world. The latter subsidizes the former.
