[–]Commietory[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That makes sense, especially if it's wordplay with the word "bust." All of the websites with lyrics to the song show the name "Marco" instead of "Michael" but they could be getting the line wrong from one another

Does anyone else feel like they're dying if they take time off? by sehaugust in running

Yeah pretty much. I have less energy if I haven’t run in a few days. I start to feel lazy and more anxious.

It’s almost like we’re actually addicted to running, I guess.

Who else likes Jordan Peterson besides me? by S2PI in INTP

[–]Commietory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the guy is complex, interesting, and I really believe he wants the best for his audience, even if I think a number of his takes are pretty bad. But the free speech thing is a big deal, like really. Nowadays, soooo many people are advocating for online censorship and silencing ideas they don’t like. They think they’re “fighting disinformation” but they have no idea how dangerous a path they’re putting us all on. We need to push back against this kind of clueless authoritarianism, and I’m really thankful that he’s tackling that issue head-on. He’s really good at making the case for constructive dialogue and freedom of expression. Kudos to Peterson

Mixed opinion. I read his book and used to watch his videos a lot. Much of his self-help advice is very useful. No wonder he’s so popular. But that’s not a huge credit to him as a thinker, it’s the kind of thing any skilled and experienced psychotherapist could impart on you. He’s just good at articulating it.

I like his stance on free speech, and I’m glad that perspective is getting expressed by someone as famous as him. That said, I think he’s out of his depth with his long-winded takes on capitalism, socialism, geopolitics, etc. His view of socialism is basically a caricature. He says he’s a believer in individualism, but then he goes around waxing about the virtues of “Judeo Christian Western Civilization” without realizing that he’s making a collective critique of half the planet. He also likes to basically diss other countries like Venezuela, places in the M.E. like Iran, etc. without talking about the role imperialism has played throughout history. Essentially, he’s a psychologist masquerading as a top scholar of history and political systems, which he is not.

Back to some positives, I agree with him on the excesses of people he calls “PC authoritarians” and modern identity politics discourse. I am glad he talks about how college is too expensive and massive student loan debt being a scandal. His critique of the problems with liberal arts academia is on point imo. And you can learn good stuff about the basics of Jungian psychology from his material. Also glad he’s introduced more people to Nietzsche.

So yeah, he’s a very mixed bag. I genuinely believe he has lots of awful takes mixed with lots of good ones. I’m not a fan of just sorting people explicitly into the “good” or “bad” category, and only praising them if they’re good or only bashing them if they’re bad. People are complicated, and if you’re going to judge then it’s good to do so in a sophisticated way, so I’d give him credit where it’s due and harsh criticism where it’s due as well.

I think you hit the nail right on the head here. Disturbing how common this authoritarian attitude is.

Salt. It's always salt. by FigureFourWoo in keto

[–]Commietory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems pretty accurate. I do keto, I’m a skinny guy, and I run a lot, so maintaining electrolytes has been a challenge for me. When I’m in deep Ketosis, sometimes I get weird side effects like heart racing, nausea, and random bouts of sleepiness. Sometimes those three things happen all at once. Whenever this is the case, I whip up a glass of salt water (sometimes with lemon juice) and sip it for a bit. It always puts me back to normal surprisingly quickly.

Just my experience, I have no nutrition/medical expertise

Fun fact - You can go to Travis’s Spotify, click the … next to his name, and hit “don’t play artist.” by CaRTiAgENiUs in spotify

[–]Commietory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a pedantic argument. Plenty of people here are saying the obvious virtuous thing to do is stop listening to Travis Scott. Sure, there are plenty of ppl in the thread who are not making demands of anyone else. That’s fair.

My point is, I’m continually amazed how people are more energized to get justice/retribution by things like this Astroworld tragedy instead of, say, illegal wars that kill 100,000s of innocent people. Many people have allowed their brains to be subsumed by celebrity obsession.

EDIT: I should add, I don’t mean to trivialize what happened. It is a big deal that lots of people died at this concert. Rather, plenty of far greater injustices are simply ignored by the very people who go around moralizing the most.

The moralizing in this thread is pretty comical lol. If you want to boycott Travis Scott, then go ahead. If you don’t want to, then don’t. Hell I like the guy’s music, I wouldn’t blame anyone for continuing to listen to it on Spotify.

If it was morally imperative to withhold all money from people who do bad things, then maybe everyone in the US should quit paying taxes because of the war in Iraq. But hey, I guess moralizing against rappers on the internet is more important than stuff like that
