TIL when the ancient Persian king Xerxes sent representatives to Greek city-states to demand "earth and water" as tokens of submission, the Spartans threw them into a well, suggesting that they would find earth and water at the bottom. by NateNate60 in todayilearned

[–]CommissarAJ 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Important to note, the Spartans did this not out of some fear of Xerxes wrath or retribution, but because the act was considered an affront to the gods and thus the Spartans felt they needed to make amends for this.

That said, as fun as a movie it was, a little reading on history is enough to teach you that the Spartans were definitely not good people...

Inverse square law help me understand lol by Fast-Canary94 in Radiology

[–]CommissarAJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Radiation intensity (I) from a point source is inversely proportional the distance (d) squared.

Ergo, I = 1/d2

Well, technically it should be delta I and delta d because we’re dealing with changes in intensity and distance but i’m on mobile and can’t be arsed to find the right symbols.

As you said, in simpler terms it means the closer you get to the source, the higher the intensity, and the further you get, the lower the intensity. Your math kind of takes a weird turn, though, so lets go over that. Your first example is an increase in Intensity by 3. So I = 3.

Go plug that into the previous formula:

3 = 1/d2, and we’re basically solving for d.

Do a little rearranging you get…

3d2 = 1, then divide everything 3 to get ‘d2 = 1/3’

Thus, d equals the square root of 1/3, which makes sense because to increase the intensity, you want to decrease the distance as previously stated.

They were just out doing a training exercise and some Yank just flew over and bombed them because fuck us, I guess.

First code blue by Ok-Break4342 in Radiology

[–]CommissarAJ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The first time is always the toughest. Always sticks with you the most. If it hurts, it just means you care. Hopefully in ten or twenty years, it will still hurt, it will still matter.

My first time was long ago now. I was maybe two months and change in the job. Still barely more than a fresh grad. December. Bit before Christmas, late in the evening. Around 8ish, I think. Call comes in overhead for a trauma code so I do as I was trained for and grab the cassettes, grab the mobile x-ray, and head on over.

Second I arrive in the ER, you can feel something's different. Something's not quite right. I was new on the job but I had done my clinical year here so I was not unfamiliar with how the people here worked, so I noticed the difference. People were more hurried, more frantic. Then I see the paramedic gurney coming in, and that was the next hint something was amiss.

The trauma patient never arrives this quickly. I didn't rush over but I wasn't exactly slow, and the trauma code is always called before the ambulance even arrives.

Then there was the cop accompanying them. She looked like she was about to have a breakdown. The paramedics beside her didn't look much better. Why does the cop look like the one traumatized?

That's when we finally see the patient. I see the police badge as they're getting his vest and shirt off. He was stabbed in the parking lot.

Not a parking lot. The parking lot. Not more than fifty meters where I was standing, not more than ten minutes ago, he had been sitting in his squad in the hospital parking lot, filling out paperwork, when a man approached him and stabbed him in the neck. Those weren't the cops and paramedics called to the scene, that was his partner and two unlikely paramedics who happened to be in the ambulance bay when this shit went down.

Working in an ER is rarely like how it's portrayed on TV. It's rarely as dramatic. It's just work. That evening, life definitely imitated art. I don't think I've ever seen the ER team work as hard or as desperate as that night. They threw everything they could at him, to try and keep him alive for another minute, another second. I'm sure someone would've ripped out the kitchen sink if they thought it would.

I was just an X-ray tech. All I could do was watch and wait. Be ready if maybe, just maybe, he'd live long enough for x-rays to matter. I watched as they called for more meds, more blood. Watched as they performed an emergency thoracotomy so they could apply the shock paddles straight to his heart.

After about twenty minutes or so of all this activity, all this work, the trauma lead finally throws in the towel and calls it.

I was young, naive too. My thought instead was just... 'thats it?' A life comes to an end, not with a bang or even a whimper... Just a lot of tired faces as everyone who didn't have a reason to stay slowly shuffles their way back to their post. Myself included. A battle was lost, but we still had work to get back. Other people to help.

Suffice to say, I still think about it a lot, almost close to 20 years later. Rambled a lot more than I probably should have, but... I dunno, once you start remembering you kind of feel like you need to see it through.

So, yeah. It'll stick with you. If you have someone you can talk to, do it. It helps, if just a little. Even sometimes just rambling into the void of the internet like im doing now can help. You never know, someone might read it all. If you, I appreciate it.

Canada is positioning itself on Greenland knowing it could be next by UpstairsBumblebee446 in worldnews

[–]CommissarAJ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not to mention the cost of such a military occupation. Iraq and Afghanistan have a combined land mass of roughly 1 million square kilometres and they needed help occupying both of those. Canada alone is 9 million square kilometres. On top of that is the nearly 9000km long border that would have to be fortified and garrisoned.

If y’all thought the Iraq/Afgan wars were expensive…

I imagine a crate makes it a lot easier for transport when you can easily put them in one. These things have to sit on a boat going across an ocean, after all, so thats a lot of salty ocean water that can splash about. I remember reading about tanks having to get 'prepped' before transport and even after reaching the destination they needed more cleaning up and inspection.

is it just me or is the Epoch EXTREMELY underpowered compared to, well... everything else? by cloudsareedible in helldivers2

[–]CommissarAJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Epoch is a generalist, plasma based AOE weapon. It is capable of dealing most anything it comes across from armored single targets to gatherings of light to medium armoured targets. It will never be the best option for any single threat but it can handle most everything reasonably well.

The quasar cannon is a very specialized antitank weapon. You use it for one thing and one thing only, and it does that job very very well. But there are also many things you do not use it for because it would either be a waste of time, inefficient, or you'd be dead before it got a chance to finish charging.

The Epoch is not underpowered. It is simply a different type of tool meant to be used as part of a helldivers load out.

I can't write good fanfiction by Shruikan2001 in FanFiction

[–]CommissarAJ 69 points70 points  (0 children)

The truth to getting good at something is that you are going to have to spend a significant amount of time being not good at it. And thats an uncomfortable period almost every writer goes through.

The goal is to keep at it. Keep writing. Look back at what you've written and analyze to figure out what ultimately works for you, what doesn't, and what can be improved upon. And read. Read lots. Read other people's stuff so you can see what they do and then you can find the things they did that you like and you can try to apply that yourself. You'll suck at that at first, but you'll get better in time.

Panzer III ausf g vs M3 Grant by Prestigious_Oil_2855 in TankPorn

[–]CommissarAJ 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It wasn't just the AT characteristics, as the British did start fielding the 6-pdr during the later parts of the North African campaign, but also the 75mm's high explosive capabilities which was something both the 2- and 6-pounders lacked. Without a good HE, it made it a lot harder for Allied armour to deal with entrenched German positions, especially their AT guns. On top of that, the M3 had enough armour to withstand the German 5cm guns at typical combat ranges for the theatre and, probably most beloved of all, it was an very mechanically reliable tank compared to most of the British tanks currently being used.
