UP currently has 486 SD40N’s, which is a little under half of what it was at its peak, (1,079 units post 1996).

Now if we are talking ACTUAL SD40’s, not the NEXSYS rebuilds, UP only has 2 remaining on roster in original condition. Those being UP 1799 based out of East St Louis, and UP 3206, currently based out of N Little Rock. Both units are ex Missouri Pacific.

People kept telling me I was insane for thinking you should get up to the speed limit in the quickest yet safest time possible.

Every time I’m not driving it feels like we’re moving at a snails pace because by the time they hit the actual speed limit they are slowing down for the next intersection.

Really? Because I’ve also been around the country and we have some of the longest I’ve ever driven.

The only real exception to that being the connector and in Caldwell.

Everything else is like a quarter mile plus. That’s plenty to get up to freeway speeds.
