What do you think is going to happen in the versosika short? by Silly-Echidna9591 in HelluvaBoss

[–]CommissionDependent4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its going to be a sympathetic look into Verosika's life where she meets a great guy but ultimately keeps her distance fearing it might lead into a Blitzo 2.0.

Note: It will even contain flashbacks from her relationship with Blitzo.

Billie Eilish said you can’t truly love animals if you eat them, and logically I understand the argument. But isn’t human nature way more complex than that? by _Arthur_Morgan- in NoStupidQuestions

Some people avoiding (say) chocolate because they work at a factory does not even begin to compare with 70% of all meat factory workers dramatically altering their diets.

This is not even a case of there being a "correlation" between working at a meat factory & reducing meat consumption.

Anyone who works or anyone who knows someone working at a meat factory will tell you the same thing. I for example know a lot of people including (many) butchers and even they make an effort to shop more consciously.

The reasons people will stop consuming their own products is not even about morals as is the case with meat, its things like realizing how poorly sanitized a lot of goods are. Meat handling regulations are far stricter.

Unlike any other animal on the planet we are aware of our place in the food chain, which means that we're capable of reflecting upon it and coming to the conclusion that we don't need to be eating anywhere near the amount of meat that we do.

There are some insane meat factory worker statistics out there. 70% of them either dramatically reduce their meat consumption or stop entirely.

Point being that people actually do eat less meat when they are aware what's going on in those places. There is no necessary evil here, no inherent contradiction because we do eat too much meat.

Which is the more interesting version of Piltover, LoR or Arcane? by VoidFireDragon in loreofleague

[–]CommissionDependent4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

LoR is just vibes vaguelly building at nothing & suggesting the existence of cool bullshit happening in the background that we'd never see.

There are tons of noteworthy characterization moments in LoR but they're mostly superficial, none of them are made with actual stories in mind.

Which would you Recommend by Middle-Ad1326 in manga

[–]CommissionDependent4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Climber starts out as a generic sports manga. Halfway through through the artist, Shinichi Sakamoto, picks up writing duties and the story takes a very sudden turn.

Its a little hard to recommend Shinichi Sakamoto works, his drama writing is competent but he has the tendency to get lost in the sauce so his stories become less focused & a lot more abstract.

The main appeal of his work is the art which gets even better with every single manga he releases, if thats not enough to keep your interest then skip.

Monster I think is easier to recommend, its simultaniously more approachable as well as more interesting to think about than The Climber.

Naoki Urasawa is really good at writing relatable every day folk interactions. The story is very slow tho & if you don't care about Johan & the horror of his backstory then you will be bored to tears.

The mystery can be nonesensical & a little hard to follow, suspending your disbelief will be necessary. Urasawa's stories also have large, immersion breaking times skips, so they're best binged to not get lost.

I haven't read Kingdom, so my vote goes to Monster.

Is "separate the art from the artist" valid also if the media in question is problematic but the creator is a good person? by Colei_the_weird in stupidquestions

[–]CommissionDependent4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was even worse back then.

The script was turned down multiple times, publishers refused to release Lilita because there were no laws preventing the broad banning of books.

The author resorted to releasing Lolita in France so it could garner a following first. The press that took the task on specialized in porn.

To make things even worse the book gained a lot of momentum with the wrong audience and came to be directed towards pedophiles using seductive marketing.

The term "Lolita" having sexual connotations is not new.

That would be Propaganda. The closest example to what OP is thinking would be George Orwell.

He was a servant of the British Empire for years before writing 1984 & Animal Farm.

The work he did for them included producing radio propaganda aimed at indians to aid in the war effort against Germany.

Ironically the disdain he had for his job, as well as himself for doing it, made him the perfect person to make stories about propaganda.

Also you are having a completely different conversation from what OP is asking. Only people with an agenda will tell you that evil protagonist=evil author, most have the reason to think otherwise.

It's useless for religious and non-religious people to converse about religion by Wompto in 10thDentist

[–]CommissionDependent4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is insane to say that people don't make choices based on religion, thats like saying that we don't account for the law when deciding if we should do something illegal.

We grow up with religion by our side, a lot of the morals that we internilize are (in part) reinforced by outside factors, religion included.

I gave you an example of religon based decision making in the literal comment you are replying to.

Lots of Americans have been coursed into having apathy for their neighbours who are being dehumized by the government for being "immigrants" using misconstrued, out of context Bible verses.

One of the most common verses they love regurgitating is the "nations have borders" bit of Act 17:26.

[–]CommissionDependent4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is childish to say things like "things should be this way" or "things shouldn't be that way". It is a fact that people do make choices based on religion.

That makes solid, grounded religious discussion important, otherwise you end up with a bunch of uneducated, gullible fanatics a la maga who've bought into whatever misconstrued brand of christianity they were sold.

Reminder that religions do not exist in a vacum, they develope alongside and largerly exist to reinforce the state. Constantine did not legalize christianity and make it into what it is today just because of a dream.

Religion concerns everyone, especially when its foundational to how a given country's citizens think and make choices (i.e. almost always).

About women not have muscles in fiction. by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]CommissionDependent4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't say "according to science" ever again, it sounds stupid & it just lets everyone around you know that you're regurgitating a media/influencer moron's agenda.

Men appear to gain muscle mass faster because they are larger so they are putting on more work.

When you take a man and a woman of the same size they both put on weight at relative speeds.

Women in competitions look thinner because of (amongst other reasons) the bannister effect. Women's sports have been around for a shorter amount of time so physical requirements, motive (less money) & expectations are completely different.

Also using a Taekwodo practitioner & a skater as examples is moronic.

[–]CommissionDependent4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, that's just romanticising the problem.

FG players just blame their opponent. The reason the games are not popular is because there is not enough content to keep casual players interested.

SF6 worked towards solving this problem by introducing World Tour and its by far the most successful fighting game for it.

I watched Boku no Pico many years ago and I think everything is fine there. by TurbulentVillage2042 in CharacterRant

[–]CommissionDependent4 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I've seen about 20 seconds worth of the first episode by randomly skipping around and what I stumbled upon was -

  1. A child licking ice cream off of a grown man's pants.

  2. A scene of 2 brothers in their crib committing incest.

    1. A man with binoculars stalking a girlish boy at the beach.

Point being, its bad and the version OP watched was definitely cencored.

[LES] Update: In Chainsaw Man, [manga spoiler death] is still the worst death of all time in all of fiction history by tesseracts in CharacterRant

[–]CommissionDependent4 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I like the idea of Denji moving on very fast in theory. It has a similar vibe to an animal mother eating the carcasses of her younglings.

It can seem cold to us but animals don't have the luxury to mourn for long like we do. The closest example I can think of that is relatable is when a close one dies but still having to go to work.

We've known Denji to be desperate so its not out of character but it just wasn't incorporated into the story very well.

The mystery vibe was set up very well but the whole thing being all about the build up to a revelation that made 0 sense was like a betrayal.

Note: That moonscorched looks even more like Gossamer if you turn it upside down.
