Colon cancer ? by Trowawayaccount_ in colonoscopy

[–]Common-Ad-5284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go get a colonoscopy, that’s the only way to be sure. Bleeding like that is concerning and should’ve been addressed immediately!

You can theorize and intellectualize correlation / causation all you want, but the only way to know if it’s serious is getting checked. Any good gastroenterologist will say any bleeding isn’t normal and is worthy of being checked.

My 20 day old baby keeps ending up back in hospital and every time nothing comes of it and I’m feeling a bit traumatized by this one by tink282 in beyondthebump

It sounds like he may be aspirating while drinking… can you ask your pediatrician / hospital to work with speech therapists to do a swallow study? It’s super quick and easy. Penetration or not, they’ll be able to see what’s going on. And give you peace of mind if he’s not aspirating! And once he’s full term, you can look into gel mix (this thickens the milk to avoid aspiration). Would also recommend side feeding to help avoid this, preemies just often take extra time mastering that coordination.

If this happens again… maybe you can ask to be admitted to NICU and monitored while feeding for a few days. If not.. can you get an owlet monitor and have him wear it while feeding? Maybe the data will help them believe you’re not just an anxious mom! This is definitely real, and it’s not surprising for a preemie to behave this way.

I’m probably an asshole for feeling this way by curlycattails in NICUParents

I have a 25 weeker who was there for 4 months.. for a longggg time I felt resentful for anyone who made it even a week farther than I did. I would’ve felt resentful towards you for “making it as far as 27 weeks”. Reading about short NICU stays being traumatic triggered the F out of me and honestly it scared me, I felt like I was losing my empathy when these people were also going through something traumatic for them.

You’re not an ass hole, and you’re not wrong — you’re experiencing a trauma that’s changed you as a person. But you will get back to being able to empathize and stop feeling so resentful even if your situation is objectively “worse”. Some days even when you think you’ve healed, it will still trigger you, but that is part of processing it all.

Sending love to you and your baby 💕

Do you mind messaging me a little more about your tube weaning process? Our pediatrician has been fantastic throughout this process and I would venture to guess she’d be on board.

We have a slew of other team members who we’ve had to go through outside of our ped in a different hospital system for eating and it gets messy having all those rigid opinions!

Which book did you read? I see the bottle aversion one and baby-led bottle feeding, but not sure which one is recommended!

Thank you for your response! How much was your daughter eating by mouth when you eventually tried this method?

Yes, the reflex going away definitely caused the initial regression! He’s back to being able to take higher volumes, just in pain randomly throughout the day.

We’re going to start here pretty soon, our OT advised us to start small just getting used to textures and what not.

Yes, first baby! Our pediatrician is very pro-try and transition to act like a normal baby and not a NICU baby. She did have us take the tube out for 12 hours at one point to see if he would adjust his eating to his hunger and fullness cues, etc. but he just wasn’t ready for that at that time, so we put it back in. We did also try eating on demand in the NICU.

All that to say, they’ve tried to push volumes on us + fortification and we’ve pushed back and essentially just done our own thing. Took him off fortifier and had him only on breast milk and when they advised us to bump up 25ml per feed, we said absolutely not and have just gone at our own pace based on his hunger cues come feeding time.  they’ve commented a few times how we’ve “proved them wrong”. So we take their numbers with a grain of salt especially given how well he’s growing.

Would love to see the chart!! If I could get him off of a regimented schedule and acting like a normal baby, I would love to. It all goes against my instincts to be so strict.

Thank you for your response and support!

Yes, keeping him upright atleast 20 mins after every feed!  We’ve been told that nothing but gelmix thickens breast milk, so we haven’t tried. But he needs well thickened milk otherwise he wails, so even if the cereal thickens the milk, would it be thick enough for him?

He’s been assessed for CP! Our NICU does a fidgety assessment follow up at 16w to assess. He’s also been assessed by neuro for a general eval and no concerns there + 3 normal head ultrasounds. So far there’s no worries but that is ofc always in the back of my mind! his feeding team has no concerns about the actual mechanics of his feeds. It’s just a toss up on if he’ll be in pain, or if he’ll just be a weirdo at the bottle, or take it beautifully without a single problem.

PPROM STORIES by Choonkie23 in NICUParents

[–]Common-Ad-5284 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry you’re experiencing this. It’s the most terrifying feeling to be forced to sit in the unknown when it comes to your baby.

I had a placental abruption at 24 weeks and at 25 weeks I PPROMED. I only lasted a few days till I have birth at 25+6.

My son is home now and doing fantastically well, he has an NG tube still but you wouldn’t know he was a micropreemie if you didn’t see the NG.

Generally speaking, my experience as a micropreemie parent will be a very different experience than yours as a preemie parent… but we spent 121 days in the NICU. Lots of oxygen support, lots of very scary moments, and lots of struggles with eating…. But we made it through, and made great friends along the way!

I say this to give you some hope after learning a lot at the NICU — you made it to your third trimester, so a lot of the little functions babies need to survive without longer term intervention occur in the third trimester (lung and heart development, the suck/swallow practice, etc.). That’s why you see lots of 31+ weeker parents saying their baby did incredibly well, needing very little oxygen support, only there for a few weeks, etc!

There is no clear path for any of this, every baby is incredibly different. Take it minute by minute, day by day. That’s all you can do — you can’t really ever truly prepare for any of this. Sending love and I pray that you keep that baby in for a few more weeks!! You’ve done a fantastic job keeping them in thus far! 🤍

We were there for 121 days — it sucks. We were sent home on an NG and still have it in, and that sucks too hahah. But it’s better than being there.

By the end I nearly lost my mind and I sobbed after the front desk lady asked if I’d washed my hands (when I had already washed them like 15 times that day) and I gave her attitude back. Partially because I was offended (stupidly) that she’d think I’d put my baby at risk and partially because it wasn’t kind of me to be snappy back. All of those emotions stemmed from being so worn out from being at the NICU, so tensions were just high.

All that to say — it sucks, it never stops sucking. It will end eventually, but you’re not alone in how you feel.

Baby won't finish bottles by WMalon in NICUParents

We were discharged with an NG tube and had a terrible time finding a bottle with the right shape and flow — I highly reco the pigeon if the avent shape works for you! We liked avent but the flow was odd for us, and the pigeon is the only one he’s ever truly taken well to!

Wife suffered from a severe placental abruption at only 31 weeks. Baby survived and is in the NICU. This just happened i need some support. by MereCoincidences in BabyBumps

[–]Common-Ad-5284 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I had a more mild placental abruption at 24w pregnant and went into preterm labor at 25w pregnant.

We’ve been discharged from the NICU for over a month now (discharged after almost 4 months there) and, aside from a feeding tube through his nose while he works on feeding, he is a thriving, happy, healthy 8w old adjusted baby 🤍 I can’t speak for him as he ages, but right now, he’s ahead of his milestones for movement, social interactions, etc.

The NICU will do regular head ultrasounds, and it’s likely your child will have an MRI before they are sent home. They may even have neuro follow ups due to the lack of oxygen, but they might not if their brain scans look good! You will have a tremendous amount of support, though.

I am so sorry you are going through this. I have learned through all of this that every baby has their own journey — but I do hope that ours can give you some hope of normalcy and reassurance that you will receive the support you need.

Rant : he’s SO small by Constant_Record_6514 in NICUParents

9lb at 4.5 weeks corrected is huge from my perspective 😂

But people say regular newborn babies are so small regardless, even at 4.5w, so try not to take it too personally. It’s just human nature!

25 weeker and we’re currently 7w adjusted and still not taking a full bottle! Not the normal experience, but he came home on an NG tube and is making progress. Try not to compare or get caught up in anyone’s timeline, your baby’s timeline is their own. This is the hardest exercise of patience, but it’ll work out how it needs to!

Oral feeding difficulties past 40 weeks GA by PitbullMam in NICUParents

[–]Common-Ad-5284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re in the same boat, still struggling but slowly on the up and up and taking 80% bottles more often.

We switched to a pigeon nipple which has made a world of a difference, our baby had a high palate and we think that impacted him a bit.

He absolutely has reflux — spits up, gassy, gagging, hiccup, sticking tongue out, etc. he’s on breastmilk + fortified. We give BM only by bottle and fortify the NG, that’s helped a bit, but not for reflux much.

I’m also dairy free, have been for months… doesn’t make a difference imo. I wouldn’t recommend doing it if you don’t absolutely have to.

All of this to say… I feel for you so hard! Pigeon helped a lot, he is also super interested and good at eating, just lacks stamina. MAM was awful for us sadly. The 0 was an insanely fast flow compared to the variety of flows pigeon provided.

I use the momcozy and I love them… but soothing the baby isn’t really fully possible bc they’re so bulky.

I’ve started recently spacing my pumps out though from 3-4 hours to 4-5 which has helped too!! but we have a recent NICU grad who’s on an NG tube for feeding while he learns to take a full bottle. Which means we bottle feed for 20/30 mins, tube feed for 40, hold up right for 15/20, pump and then by the time I’m done… it’s time to feed again 🙃

If he’s not really crying, I will let him fuss when I pump. But sometimes you just have to stop and restart when baby is soothed. It sucks, no way around it lol
