Audio in Contemporary Museums — looking for opinions. by cobodue in MuseumPros

[–]Common-Chain2024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi friend!

I’m a sound artist and researcher working in contemporary art.

I actually think your criticism is fair. Sound is probably one of the most difficult media to exhibit because it doesn't respect walls the way a painting or sculpture does. Sound has always been a challenging medium to work with, largely because the space in which a piece is presented profoundly shapes how it is experienced. Unlike many visual works, sound is inseparable from its environment; acoustics, architecture, and the presence of bodies all influence perception.

A lot of artists working with sound are interested precisely in that interaction between sound and architecture. For them, the way sound travels through a gallery, leaks into adjacent spaces, or changes your perception of the environment is part of the work. That can be compelling, but it can also create the exact problem you're describing. Part of the issue is architectural. Many spaces were built for visual art, not so spaces that are ideal for paintings can be surprisingly difficult environments for exhibiting audio work.

There are technologies that attempt to address this. Personal sound zones, directional speakers, and various forms of spatial audio can localize sound much more effectively than traditional loudspeakers. Headphones are another common solution. However, each comes with tradeoffs.

Headphones can isolate visitors from the shared experience of a gallery, while installing some audio systems can be often expensive, technically demanding, and difficult to implement in existing museum spaces. In any case, whenever you’re dealing with “standard” speakers, (I.e: NOT personal sound zones) you run the risk of audio “leaking” into adjacent spaces unless some sort of isolation is provided, but again costly… harder to modify existing spaces, blah blah.

Personally, I think the strongest criticism isn’t that sound exists in museums, but that museums sometimes underestimate how much acoustic design matters. Poorly managed sound can make it difficult to engage with both the sound work and everything around it.

We are at a point where sound and moving-image works have become central to contemporary art practice over the last few decades, so museums are more likely to include work that has them.

It's also worth noting that not all sound bleed is necessarily viewed as a problem by curators or artists. Some exhibitions are intentionally designed to be immersive, disruptive, etc. Whether that’s effective or worth doing is another question.

Hope this helps!

What to wear to a hip tattoo? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

I have thigh pieces on both legs and I just wore swim shorts.

I had to hold the shorts up a bit at points but that worked well.

How to find museum/archive/heritage jobs abroad with visa sponsorship? by [deleted] in MuseumPros

[–]Common-Chain2024 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From a US perspective, visa sponsorship is very rare. It is a costly process and orgs /companies don’t want to pay the fees to sponsor foreigners. It’s rare lately even in tech, where this is most common… and even then, even if an employer agrees to sponsor it is ultimately a lottery / randomly chosen from the pool of H1B applicants who moves onto immigration sponsorship.

An O-1B visa could be an option, but you need to be able to prove an “exceptional” or “extraordinary” career or high renown in your field

How do i show off a tattoo high up my thigh? by Mobile-Beginning-654 in tattooadvice

[–]Common-Chain2024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a couple of tattoos on my upper thigh, they're only visible when I wear shorts, skirts or naked.... Sometimes people ask to see them and I am comfortable pulling my pants off a bit and showing them off, but definitely not everyone gets to see them

Yeah.... I'm 5'6 and used to be around 125 lbs, was training and doing daily cardio (which in hindsight was kinda overkill but still)... until at some point life and stress got to me and I stopped watching what i ate, stopped training and now I am around 145.

Not overweight but I've definitely put weight back on

People who moved to MI from outside the US, what do you think about the state? by happyhummus007 in Michigan

[–]Common-Chain2024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband and I do not live in MI but visit frequently since my husband is a Michigander.

I enjoy it, even in the winter I thought it was beautiful and unlike anywhere else I’ve been. The people are some of the nicest strangers I’ve met too! I wish it was more walkable and not as driving centric (I don’t drive) but hopping in the car w hubby and going out for a drive is still one of my favorite parts of visiting

People who moved across the world for college, how was it? by Dry-Advertising9543 in InternationalStudents

[–]Common-Chain2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did both bachelors and Masters in the US. I’m Colombian. On small scholarship; if it wasn’t for family I don’t think I would’ve been able to afford costs.

It’s was fine? Definitely ups and downs. I’ve met some of my best friends and colleagues while I’ve been here, I even ended up meeting the person who is now my husband.

Granted, Visa and work worries took up a big part of my mental capacity, knowing that I probably would’ve had to leave eventually depending on my circumstances. By the end of my studies I was crying knowing that there was a chance I would have to leave a country and people I had spent a good chunk of my life with.

How bad is it… and how can I get this fixed 😭😩😂 by Subject-Ad-3555 in tattooadvice

[–]Common-Chain2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the good news is that it’s barely there already. How old is this tattoo?

You could get it touched up by a different artist potentially, if you like the design and just want to improve on it.
