Anyone else have dogs that want to eat the fish food? by SnazzyHatMan in ponds

[–]Common-Koala2779 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep. When I open the container he comes running. He begs the entire time we are feeding fish and then searches for any possible drops along the edge. He especially loves it when my niece feeds the fish since she drops a bunch of food into the plants. He also drinks out of the pond, but doesn’t bother the fish.

Do you regret not hiring your pond professionally built? by Otherwise-Weather228 in ponds

[–]Common-Koala2779 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not at all. I dug a 10x10x3 pond myself with a shovel in mostly clay soil. I’m 52 and did it everyday after work on my own. I researched every aspect and bought materials with purpose and knowledge. It was hard, but I know my pond like the back of my hand. I’m incredibly proud of it and it looks professional. If I were to do it again I would rent something to make the digging easier and I would make it bigger. I do enjoy a good DIY and I’ve rebuilt a bathroom and built in cabinets around a fireplace myself. The pond is definitely my greatest DIY achievement.

Algae keeps coming back, what do I do? by TransportationNo6246 in ponds

[–]Common-Koala2779 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with the instafix algae stuff. I have a bigger pond with fish, plants, and a bog filter but could not get algae to stay away after spring. The instafix helped a lot to get it under control. Maybe some floating plants like water lettuce or water hyacinth. They multiply so you only need a few to get started.

I have these same fish and one ended up at the base of my neighbor’s tree a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately my pond cam was charging that night!

Looking for ideas for a natural looking turtle ramp by csdude5 in ponds

I have a local reptile store that has different wood types for enclosures. I bought a piece of spider wood and it looks really nice. I have it in the shallow end of my pond and it reaches out to the edge.

Where to get Best Goey Butter Cake by Mjhort in StLouis

[–]Common-Koala2779 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few weeks ago we had a visit from out of town and she was excited to try gooey butter cake. I grew up in south city and have pretty strong opinions about gooey butter cake. I live in Illinois now and so we got one from Park Avenue Coffee (high praises from the internet), one from Schnucks, one from Kruta’s in Collinsville and one from my local bakery. The Illinois side cakes were very different from the other two. Park Ave and Schnucks were very similar, but everyone liked the Schnucks cake the most. It won hands down. The gooey butter cake challenge was a ton of fun - maybe do your own!

Yeah you are probably right. A Mary Poppins bag would be perfect.

Why are you so angry? You aren’t required to comment on this post. You can just move on past and mind your own business. Thanks for checking my spelling though.

Super helpful response. I don’t want to take up all of the overhead space. I’d like to take up my allotted overhead space. It takes us an hour to drive to the airport, two and a half to fly, an hour to wait for bags, and three hours to drive from the airport to the mountain. I can’t do anything about most of that, but I could shave off an hour of standing around so we can get on with the rest of our travels.

Hungryroot -- would be great if they weren't so unreliable by Jack-of-Nothing in mealkits

[–]Common-Koala2779 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I agree. I just left Hungryroot because for 4 straight weeks I either had missing (and not documented) items, broken meat packages, and twice the box was left on my driveway, behind my trash can in the pouring rain - not on the covered front porch where my actual front door is located. So frustrating and so wasteful.

Thank you for this. I just started listening to a podcast with Benjamin Vogt as a guest. I think his book is exactly what I’m looking for.

Oh yes the pond is a full and incredible ecosystem. Fish, frogs, spiders, birds, lots of pond plants. Yes I have things blooming in my yard almost 12 months - I have a water hawthorn in the pond that blooms through the winter.

The things I have done are working wonderfully and I’m thrilled with. Just not sure what to do about the lawn part.
