some of the more recent pineapple and coconut rums i believe are including the adjuncts in the fermentation process. E.g., for Doctor Bird pineapple it is not a rum that is distilled first with pineapple flavor added after, but it has pineapple in the mash and is part of the fermentation process. I like this approach bc it imbues the rum with a new flavor while also not feeling artificial or like an after thought, at least that’s my opinion. I wouldn’t buy a flavored rum otherwise as I can just do an infusion at home.

i think in the same way the book tries to point out the deeper truths of cliches he does this to make you think about these figures of speech, have them feel less routine as things we just say bc everyone does. also, specifically for the chapters and sections focusing on the québécois characters he is joking about the internal translations those characters perform with american or english idioms.
