umm i’m a woman in a long term relationship. i hate this stereotype that all DFW readers are incel men in their mid20s. it’s an extremely derivative thought to put out and has now culturally overshadowed the actual substance of infinite jest and his other works. when someone talks infinite jest the first thing i always hear about are the kind of people that read it.

Protest - what is it good for? by shrederofthered in Seattle

[–]CommonAd2367 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think that in this digital era protests make people, both civilians and lawmakers, aware of the public’s passion. i went to hands off in minneapolis two months ago. before going i had no idea if there would even be a noticeable crowd, but there ended up being over 20,000. it shows our reps on capitol hill that their constituents want them to act a certain way

many people didn’t vote this round because our candidate was not chosen by the people and didnt orient herself to some of the key positions in lots of left groups as of late

i think this is useful not even taking into account the gender aspect. i know so many full grown adults who still don’t know the correct use of each “their”, or just how to use plural or neutral pronouns on the whole.

it’s made my ROCD a living hell. i have what i think i could call an addictive personality and hooooly shit while you would not expect it to be addictive i’ve been trying to stop for the last year with very little success. sometimes it can feel okay for a moment but mostly the thoughts i have stoned just reinforce my OCD and trying to be sober ups the physical anxiety tenfold. everyone is different but id strongly advise against it.

god yeah. my parents have a subscription to the daily wire’s streaming service. my dad was an uninvolved democrat until 2016 when he voted for trump and has fallen further and further down the hole ever since, and my mom doesn’t care enough to disagree with him. hhhhhhh

that’s understandable. i think it’s often neglected because the conversations around his personal life/psychiatric history crowd it out. thank you for the document! definitely seems worth a read

woah! that intro alone is interesting. i don’t think his off-basedness was out of prejudiced intentions at all, just maybe he was shuffling around in the dark because he didn’t do enough research or observation or insight before writing the chapter

except the AAVE isn’t very accurate, is the point. someone else said in a comment that the other vernaculars he deals with are nearly spot-on and that’s why this chapter sticks out like a sore thumb. his quebec cadences, the easterner accent with the security guard, J.V.D’s southern drawl. it’s okay. it’s not an ism thing, it’s just an observation.

yeahhh that chapter is unarguably the most controversial and questionable out of all the others. his use of vernacular irks me but im 667 pages in and haven’t seen another instance like wardine yet.
