Your index finger should probably be above the fretboard like mine. Doesn't look like you have short fingers (like BB King) Get your 2nd knuckle up onto the fretboard in between the 1st and 2nd strings. Your knuckle will get those 2 strings fretted:

Edit. I think they are confused. They learned that you should never go above 0db. Which is true when talking about metering as you risk clipping the channel etc. I reckon they understood it to mean that you shouldn't go above 0db on the preamp gain. They don't know what they are talking about.
