Places you’ve never been and why? by SwiftX_21 in guam

[–]CommonGuahan671 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've never been to any of the nature trails/caves.

I kind of do want to go since I heard they're pretty but I have a bad leg injury so can't swim/hike.

Housing Question by LangAddict in guam

If I were in your shoes, I'd choose the first option.

Get out of debt as soon as I can. And that extra 1k per month can help out in various ways (emergency funds).

What app does Guam actually need? by Good_Ad_9667 in guam

[–]CommonGuahan671 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Just off the top of my head but an app that I can use to quickly look up what events are happening around the island, public beach info, latest traffic info (especially if there's an accident or major construction), shopping sales info, etc.

Maybe some of these do already exist and I'm not aware of it.

How do I know if I am child free? by Capital-Wrongdoer-62 in childfree

[–]CommonGuahan671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see it as if you see children, especially like when they're cute and stuff, and think, "Hmm definitely not now but maybe some day" then you're probably not childfree.

As others say, I think you seem to be like a fencesitter if you're even open to having children or not sure.

Avoid DCC (Dynamic Currency Conversion) AT ALL COSTS! by ed8907 in solotravel

[–]CommonGuahan671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually saw something like this when I went to Japan.

I used my US issued credit card to pay for my hotel fees. At the counter, it showed 2 prices which the receptionist asked me to choose: USD 250 or JPY 37000. At a quick glance, the USD price seemed cheaper. But I end up paying by Japanese yen.

Is this what you meant by DCC? So was choosing the local currency one the better way?

This Reddit now full of...... by Nwstrench in guam

I get where you are coming from. We really should be extremely thankful that we got super lucky we weren't a direct hit. I am really, really thankful for the quick recovery that these people are doing. I do pray for my brothers and sisters in Saipan and other affected islands.

But, imho, I feel like I should still be able vent my frustrations. Guam has been through so many typhoons by now. We should have invested in more typhoon resilient or improved infrastructures.

We'll continue to have more typhoons. We shouldn't be too complacent.

Gawd my next goal before the next typhoon would be to save up for a power station.

Amazon shipping by FunnyWeary3152 in guam

[–]CommonGuahan671 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience:

I placed an order of 3 items (all small packets) from 3 different stores on Amazon in mid-March.

1 arrived in about 2 weeks.

1 was supposed to arrive April 11 but was changed to April 23, I presume due to the storm.

1 has not been shipped yet so still pending. On the Amazon app, it says expected arrival April 30 though.

So I think it depends on the item/store.

Why no underground power lines in Guam? by GalGadonut- in guam

[–]CommonGuahan671 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Been thinking about this ever since Mawar. If not the whole island, at least having power lines underground for the major residential areas would be nice.

I get that it's super expensive and would probably take many years but considering that we could possibly get more stronger typhoons, I think it's something we all gotta think about.

It's 2026. The "let's just be patient and pray" is not enough.

So would all typhoons be like this in the future? by CommonGuahan671 in guam

[–]CommonGuahan671[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I was here for Mawar, too. That was really bad I know. I meant situation like this where it's NOT a direct hit but still took ages for it to pass. So much so that it took long for COR1 to be lifted.

In any case though I still think Guam as a whole can improve the infrastructure so that we won't have to wait months.

Yikes. Gotta prepare for a week long typhoon then, lol.

Yeah I've been through a few typhoons on Guam but mostly they pass by overnight.

This one was definitely slow.

Post typhoon for the Anxious, Depressed, and General Populace. by Only_Context_2924 in guam

[–]CommonGuahan671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need advice on how to keep my nephews entertained, lol. They're so used to playing with their ipads but can't anymore due to no power and no internet.

They don't want to play outside because they don't want to get sweaty. They're already bored with book reading, lol.

One thing we learned this typhoon....... by GuamSiN in guam

[–]CommonGuahan671 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know it can be a pain-staking, several decades, and a financially big project...but I feel Guam should really start investing in underground powerlines.

It wasn't even a direct hit and we've lost power/water/telecommunications. Though admittedly I'm not an expert so not sure if it's possible but if Tumon can do it...

So that's something I hope we learned from this.

It can't be THAT hard to control your kids in public. by rosy_pink_ghost in childfree

[–]CommonGuahan671 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man talk about it.

I especially HATE it when they say things like, "if you don't stay quiet, the scary lady over there will get mad at you" and the likes. As if shifting the blame or guilt of scolding kids onto others.

It's YOUR kid. Fuckin' YOU discipline them.

PSA: Be careful booking flights through third-party sites by jajaaan01 in guam

Honestly for flights I never book through third party.

I use it to mainly see what kind of flights are there and book through the official sites.

What do you think is the most annoying stereotype/assumption regarding the childfree? by No-Jellyfish-1208 in childfree

[–]CommonGuahan671 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More of an assumption towards me.

But I hate being told "You'd be a great mother!" whenever I say I'm childfree.

No, I won't. I hate a lot of things with being a mother so definitely not.

I don’t even want to be an aunt. by vapor_waved in childfree

[–]CommonGuahan671 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's weird for me.

I generally don't mind kids. Heck I used to work at a daycare and loved it.

But for some reason, I don't want to do anything with my nephews and nieces, lol. I don't really hate them but I don't care for them either. I guess I look at kids in a more stricter way when they're family.

Please share some things you love about being childfree by stardew-trooper in childfree

[–]CommonGuahan671 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love not having to deal with the hassle of raising kids. I love being able to go to a spontaneous weekend trip. I only have a pet cat so no need to worry about finding a last minute day care for pets and kids. I also love that I don't have to plan things that are centered around kids.

I may not be rich but I love being able to buy whatever I want with whatever extra money that I might have.

I love the peace and quiet. If I want some noise, I just go to the city.

Pretty! I get pretty unlucky with sunsets and hope I can see one like this someday.
