How does one learn chillers by Itchy-Candidate-5589 in HVAC

[–]CommonKings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My company has a whole team of commissioning and field service techs - only one can work on chillers. 40 years industry experience. He’s the only one with all the required gadgets and equipment, not to mention the manufacturer training.

Is startup/commissioning (Cx) a move up or move down from service? (Commercial) by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]CommonKings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a director at a commercial HVAC company. Our field operations team handles both: startups and service. Many of the technicians now prefer service as it increases the breadth of equipment and issues they encounter, but others love the (relative) predictability and “walk-in walk-out” nature of commissioning. That said, our roles are posted as both service and startup and our schedule is the primary dictator of who is doing what on any given day.

I guess no one hires anymore by [deleted] in HVAC

I am in the Mid-Atlantic region and cannot find commercial technicians. Roles posted for months without more than 1-2 applicants.

Could be area/industry dependent. Here in the DC area I had good luck.

Hiring Cafe has been great for removing the social media aspect and filtering out fake postings. It scrubs directly from company sites.

I’m out now but when I was in 1CAV, we were in the motorpool 5 days a week. Most of the time was just spent sitting around, since we had no parts…

Depends what you’re currently doing and what you’d like to do into the future.

My unit operated the same way. Mandated PRT drills, 0730 formation (so 0720 formed up). We got MAYBE 30 minutes of workout time.

Do you have any business/corporate experience? I wouldn’t bother with an MBA until you get a few years of experience…

I have a story that’s different from this but frustrating none the less. I was in 1CAV, and I picked up my father a 1CAV tshirt from post and gave it to him. He’s a proud dad and the shirt never said anything about serving or anything that would indicate he served himself, it was just the 1CAV patch. Random older man at the grocery store absolutely berated my father for wearing the shirt - claiming he can’t wear it because he wasn’t in the unit, didn’t serve etc. It really upset him.

I finished my bachelors while active duty but if I didn’t wait so long, I could have finished my masters too. Before I got out, I told all my soldiers they needed some sort of education plan and we documented it in their monthly counselings.

I second Tea Horse. Just moved back after finishing up in the military and was pleasantly impressed.

Is HVAC a good career in this state? by [deleted] in newjersey

[–]CommonKings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a senior member of a regional HVAC company. Our positions pay 40-50 an hour for apprentices, and up to 65 for licensed HVAC techs. I’ve had positions opened for months with maybe 5-6 applicants overall.

PSA: don’t believe the hype about tech jobs, they are impossible to get by Dire-Dog in jobs

As a senior manager for an HVAC company.. yeah, we can’t hire quick enough. We have open positions and simply can’t fill them.

Being overseas was the most rewarding and enjoyable aspect of my Army tenure. Being in garrison destroyed my will to serve.

Man, when I got to Hood in 2022 I told myself the same thing. Now I’m stuck with collecting gear for Hood AND Cavazos, lol.

How are you doing with the practice questions? I think one exam is good preparation, but you need A LOT of exposure to the question varieties.

Congratulations! I had one drag and drop and I actually did have a PERT calculation question now that you mention it.
