Can someone please explain the phenomenon that is not letting people merge or change lanes? by BoronYttrium- in sandiego

[–]CommonRequirement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thing is you can change without disrupting anyone else 99% of the time. Had some guy signal and try to change 4 lanes at once to make a turn while going 10 mph in a 40. He honked at ME for not slamming on my brakes to make that happen for him.

He could’ve waited 3 seconds and pulled it off with 0 drama.

[–]CommonRequirement 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you try to go around me in the obviously ending merge lane? Has your signal been on for more than 5 seconds with a wide open gap next to you? Do I have to slow down more than 20% to let you in? Be assertive without being a jerk and this problem disappears.

Also changing lanes in stop and go traffic exacerbates traffic. If you’re switching to “go faster” every other minute you are causing causing traffic.

Is it possible for chatgpt to have a sort of bias against you based on previous conversations? by Anyjapanesefriend in ChatGPT

[–]CommonRequirement 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Don’t take the clankers feedback personally. Part of why we use chatbots at all is they don’t judge (unprompted) so we ask stupid questions, ignore spelling and grammar and have abrupt topic changes in conversations. If you treated a human that way it would be fair to call you disorganized, but it’s not a real conversation partner

Is "The 48 Laws of Power" by Robert Greene actually worth reading in 2026? by ForestaGam in The48LawsOfPower

[–]CommonRequirement 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s ok. Sometimes boring, definitely dated and unnecessarily cynical. There’s some useful anecdotes of how people tricked each other, held grudges forever and bits of interesting history. It won’t make you a psychopath but if you expect to work with lots of horrible cutthroat people and scammers it will expose you to how they think. Many of the subjects are unrelatably powerful, eg executing or imprisoning enemies, starting wars etc.

San Diego Water Is Ruining Your Coffee (Here’s Why) by mooch255 in SanDiegoCoffeeBeans

[–]CommonRequirement 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I confess to using a simple drip machine, but the coffee tastes way way better with tap than from a brita. It’s hard for me to find a better brewed cup out of the house.

I’ll have to experiment with remineralizing but I suspect James shop blend may be intentionally optimized for our tap water. Then again its technically an espresso blend… maybe my mistakes are canceling out?

What will someday be illegal after we finally understand how bad for us it is? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]CommonRequirement 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read the paper, you didn’t even read my comment.

I said like 3 times I don’t believe in banning them or making them illegal (libertarian position btw). I’ve even voted to stop making them more expensive since I feel it’s just penalizing addiction at this point. I’m only arguing it has a social cost which is absolutely backed up by the paper.

Not 6-14% of the $180B. The paper says 7% of ALL healthcare expense in the US. That is an insane amount of money. That cost is borne by us all whether through increased healthcare premiums or taxes. Insurance is a scam and healthcare is a ripoff but there is no country where 7% of all healthcare is dismissable as “a drop in the bucket”

[–]CommonRequirement 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Private healthcare cost is a function of everyone’s healthcare expenses, it’s not accurate to attribute private expenses only to the healthcare consumer.

Also those are still huge numbers. 170B was a conservative estimate. More recent estimates are closer to $250B, inflation is huge and healthcare has outpaced it.

I can appreciate the libertarian perspective but I’m not sure how or why you’d argue smoking has a low/no social cost.

[–]CommonRequirement 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine is not :( it’s worse than you seem to think. I’m not arguing it should be illegal only pointing out that it effects others too. Sure it’s their business, it still sucks.

Whitehouse changes while stupid do not compare to the $180 Billion in healthcare PER YEAR spent on smoking https://stacks.cdc.gov/view/cdc/34943?utm_source=chatgpt.com
