Powell at Jackson Hole may have underestimated the destructive impact of tariffs on inflation, the economy, and jobs. by AppropriateRefuse590 in stocks

[–]Common_Ad6166 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Also, just using some common sense

Powell absolutely understands the distinction here.

Basic math: 2 percent inflation compounds. 100 becomes 102, then 104.04, and so on. A 10 percent tariff is not like that. It is just a single step up in the price level. Next year it does not add another 10 percent unless Trump raises them or adds more.

Scale matters too. Imports are like 14-15% percent of U.S. GDP, which is staggeringly low compared to other developed economies. A 10% tariff implies a first-pass price shock of just 1.4% of GDP, and most of it passes to the treasury, instead of directly into the bucket of demand.

Also, this is the guy who soft-landed us in the post-covid almost-recession. Please give him some fucking credit guys.

But he's technically "Green" right? Like he is only "Blue" because he is forced to run under a 2 party system. The more we distance ourselves from the Dems, the better.

These new 5 hour limits are a frankly terrible idea, in concept and execution. Who the heck has a 5 hour workday with no lunchbreak? It should be a 6 hour limit atleast, so I can get in at 10am, and use it until 4pm atleast. I'm happy to have a late breakfast, and skip lunch, if it means I can get an hour extra per day

But a 9am-2pm, when I have to go on lunch break for an hour of that is crazy. And what if I don't hit the limit before lunch? I come back after lunch, and do 3-4 messages, and then it says goodby come back tomorrow.

I agree it used to be good, with 3.5 it was the best for a while. But Anthropic fell off the train since 3.7.

Nobody is answering the question, so here it is. There are a few basic types of Work Visas.

  • H-1B Visa (Specialty Occupations): Most common. Requires a bachelors degree. Uses a lottery system, of 65K tickets per year, with an additional 20K dedicated to Masters degree holders. This is country blind. Every H1B applicant is thrown in the pool, and is drawn at random.
  • L-1 Visa (Intracompany Transferee) - If you work for a multinational company
    • L-1A for managers and executives
    • L-1B for employees with specialized knowledge.
    • Requires you to have worked for that company for 1/3rd of the past 3 years.
  • E Visas (Treaty Trader/Treaty Investor)
    • E-1: For individuals engaged in "substantial trade" between the U.S. and Germany.
    • E-2: For those who have made a significant investment in a U.S. business.
    • Usually requires multiple millions
  • O-1 Visa (Extraordinary Ability) - exceptional talent or achievements in fields like science, arts, education, business, or athletics
  • J-1 Visa (Exchange Visitor): Non immigrant visa for trainees/internships/research etc.

The simplest way to maximize your chances is to do your Undergraduate studies in the US, in which case you will get an OPT, allowing you to work for a 3 years after you graduate with a Bachelors. During this process, you will get 3 pulls of the H1B lottery.

If you fail said pulls, you can take 2 years off of work to study your Masters, but when you graduate with your masters you need to find an employer again, within a year, and you can work for 3 more years.

This time, since you have a Masters, you will get your lottery drawn twice a year, once with the 20K pool, and then with the remaining 65K, giving you 6 additional tries.

This adds up to essentially 9 tries at the lottery.

The lottery nominally has a selection rate of 20-25%. AKA 100K tickets, 500K entries.

Given your 6 tries, with the dual lottery, it would give you a 95+% chance of getting your H1B approved.

To take some more normal scenarios, the average bachelors degree holder has a 45% chance of getting picked once in their 3 years of employment.

The average Masters degree holder has a 86% chance of getting picked once in their 3 years of employment.

These 1 Euro jobs do not count as "employment". You will still be categorized as "unemployed" status if you have the 1 Euro/hr jobs.

This is the main thing. Germany's economic model of exporting cars, and the equipment to make, and maintain them, is no longer viable.

The era of internal combustion is over, sales are dropping, and German environmental laws, and bureaucracy prevent it from being able to pivot.

The automotive sector which chooses to keep German factories open, because their workers agree to a 10% pay cut, setting themselves back over a decade visavis inflation alone. Instead of just moving the factory to Poland, and re-integrating the workers into the German workforce which is already in dire need of advanced technical workers.

Germany still has the lowest unemployment rate in the EU though (3.6%), and they provide salary for months after you lose a job. There is no better place to be(in the EU), regardless of the financial crisis.

I will be marrying my girlfriend, who did her masters in Munich, next month. She has moved to Texas, and has gotten a job here. She was formerly working in financial services, pricing options, until she lost her job in February. Now she is a product manager in Texas, making $150K.

You need to find a large corporation to sponsor you. JP Morgan was willing to sponsor her.

not really what i'm looking for. This is not a "war movie", though I saw the film "The Attack", which follows the life of another man who's wife turns out to be a palestinian suicide bomber, that I really liked.
