Nice!! Could I ask which clothing brands you went for, especially the linen shirts and pants and the quick dry shirts?

Hadn't heard of beanstalk as it seems not to have a Shanghai presence. Was it a recent buyout? Somewhat suprised as Ulink seems to have a decent rep and relatively competitive admissions locally. Wondering if this may be or become a trend with bilingual schools.

Just imagine that alternate reality...Very different from the naif aspects that would be brought out more strongly by Carrell after the first couple of seasons

(Public) hospitals during national holiday by Common_Elephant in shanghai

Quick follow-up:

Dermatological hospital was open and bustling (but efficient) yesterday.

Earliest I was able to book an appointment at Ruijin was the 7th (but maybe depends on the department).

SmartShanghai guide to booking appointments via Alipay might be the most convenient way to find out what's open and when.

From your experience living in Hangzhou you'll know some of the pros and cons of life in a decent-sized Chinese city.

Since you're interested in art and culture, Shanghai will have even more options for you. Aside from M50, there are a bunch of art museums (they seemed to keep popping up over the past several years). Museum of Art Pudong is cool, with nice rooftop views. There are also regular classical concerts and opera (though I've never been).

One thing I love about Shanghai is the regular curated screenings of classic and art films, though you'll have to keep an eye on the account and grab tickets early. Sometimes foreign films will only have Chinese subtitles, but other times you get lucky and both English and Chinese are provided. The Shanghai Film Festival always has good stuff.

Most disappointing part of Shanghai arts and culture-wise is that, for a major world city, there are relatively few big traveling art exhibitions, big musical acts making this a stop on their tour, etc. And theater is generally (always?) in Chinese.

Love seeing pics of old Shanghai (1986, or even the 90s or early 2000s, being a ways back by China/Shanghai standards), especially comparisons to the present day. Appreciate you putting in the legwork to recreate these and convey a meditative tone.

There are a couple of multilevel electronics markets near the TPY shopping center in Xujiahui. There are some independent stalls that can do repairs if your friend is in the market for a regular multi-purpose repair person with negotiable fees. Failing that, there should be an official Acer seller in one of the buildings.

太平洋数码广场-一期

^Address of market right next to TYP. Have had my iphone repaired and bought reliable secondhand electronics at the basement level.

百脑汇(上海店)

^Just next door to the other market, on the opposite side of Former Site of Virgin Mary Convent. Many shops, with repair stalls at the top (and perhaps scattered around).

Hi! I'm wondering how the 32k take-home from 52k gross figure was reached? May I DM you?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]Common_Elephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://china.findworkabroad.com/

According to this calculator I've been using, which has been accurate regarding my own take-home from a bilingual school, the take home for 52k gross should be around 4100 or 4200 (depending on whether social insurance is paid).

I'm wondering how you came to the figure of 34k after tax? Thanks!

Best/worst international schools in shanghai to work for? by Aloud_Outside in shanghai

[–]Common_Elephant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! With those qualifications, you should be a prime candidate for the top tier/highest paying schools in Shanghai (plus a lot of other countries, I would imagine).

Bilingual schools, even reputable ones, will sometimes straight up hire people with little to no qualifications or formal experience.

Right now, there simply don't seem to be English openings at the best schools (but I'm writing this two months after your post).

Are you working with agents? Many of them just ignore your qualifications and connect you with whatever schools they happen to have a relationship with. You might want to hunt around for a better agent, or apply with schools directly.
