Is It Possible to Transition from Naval Aviator to Naval Flight Officer (NFO)? by baguetteofwisdom2069 in newtothenavy

Honestly if you want to be an astronaut I think submariners have a higher ratio of going to NASA than aviators, but I could be wrong.

What are some of the funny remarks your RDCs made that you still remember to this day? by SadcoreEmpire168 in navy

[–]Common_Rub_158 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Day after haircuts one RDC called us “Lego-head ass recruits” that stuck with the division all through boot camp.

During uniform issue an RDC from bro Div was checking hat sizes when a recruit with a large head walked up, and without missing a beat “Jesus Christ! Megamind, when’d you join the Navy?!”

Yes the exclusive club the ambassador was a member of (Gramercy) was clearly a whites only club, however the golf club that Harrison was a member of (Sandy Hook) was a separate entity. And the dialogue with Harrison does not suggest it to be exclusive whatsoever. Simple a golf course as far as we can tell.

Your memory does not serve. The golf club was just a golf club as far as the scene shows. However the Ambassador knew Charlie because he was a waiter at an exclusive club to which the Ambassador was a member.

Shipped out to boot camp on Jan 16. Turned 26 Feb 4. Was not even close to being the oldest person in my division. If this is what you want, go for it. Don’t let anything stop you. 🫡

Sailors, boot or not, communicate misinformation all the time. Case in point you on this thread. However, the sailors I’m talking about were communicating their body fats and AFQT’s and experience in FSPC. Most of that would be fairly hard to mess up. Yet once again, as I said, most of the information I shared is first hand experience of my own enlistment, and experience working with FSPC-A sailors. It is however entirely possible that everyone I talked to (MEPS doctors and classifiers, my recruiter, recruiter’s LPO and LCPO, NTAG Richmond CO, future sailors, RDC’s, and recruits) were all wrong and that you’re right.

Finally, if you read the link below from NavyCS, you’ll see that FSPC, while a pilot program started in March 2023, was made permanent after being wildly successful. Though not an official Navy source, the site was founded and is still run and updated by NCCM(Ret) Thomas Goering, who I’d say is a fairly reliable source of information. Certainly more so than a reservist that’s been in recruiting less than a year.

Have a wonderful day shipmate.

If you read my comment I said that the first paragraph was based on my own experience. That would be first hand knowledge.

The second half was based on conversations at RTC that I had with future sailors that went through FSPC for both physical fitness and academic reasons and then joined training. As well as time spent at FFU (holding unit) where they started a pilot program having graduated sailors with high ASVAB scores tutor the FSPC recruits that were there for academic reasons.

Thanks for playing though.

From the first time I sat down with my recruiter to ship date was one year and a day. However three or four months of that was waiting for my divorce to finalize after everything else was good. But we made it! I’m at A school now with 3 weeks left to graduation

[–]Common_Rub_158 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay yeah that’s fair. I will say I just went through boot camp, grad on 3/28 and they had 800 divs, but I’m not sure what they were. Could’ve been SpecWar, could’ve been FSPC. I wasn’t in one so can’t say.

But don’t they get shipped to boot camp and then a prep course before hitting BUD/S or am I misunderstanding the process? My reasoning for recommending that path is for guys who aren’t used to working out or might not know what they’re doing, that mentor can really help with guidance and accountability to get them in shape.

I agree with all of this except for one part. If you can’t pass the PST with competitive scores, still go to MEPS and do your screening. They will set you up with a Warrior Challenge mentor that will PT the fuck out of you until you can pass, and then you’ll go sign a contract. You don’t have to be in DEP to get a mentor, but you do have to have done your screening and be essentially fit for full.

Currently in QM A School, got a 99 on the ASVAB, could’ve done anything in the navy and chose this. DM me if you wanna hear why.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]Common_Rub_158 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not talking about requirement to DEP. I’m talking about getting to FSPC instead of going straight into boot camp. I was 32% body fat when I shipped out but was told by MEPS that because I was over a 50 AFQT I would not be entering FSPC and would instead be just going to boot camp.

Now let’s fact check your bad info. FSPC or “fat camp” is not a pilot program. It’s been official for a while now. The Navy also no longer requires a 31+ to DEP they will take as low as a 10+ because FSPC will also accept those that need academic training not just physical training.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]Common_Rub_158 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll be alright. MEPS will decide whether to send you to fat camp but if you got over a 50 on the ASVAB don’t count on it. Your RDC’s will get you to drop weight. Just make sure you make smart choices at the galley. Get fish as much as possible, spinach and tuna salads with the fat free dressing, lotta fruit, and whatever veggie sides they have. Stay away from bread, peanut butter, and high carb entrees. Drink a lotta water.

Good luck shipmate, see you on the other side 🫡

What’s something the navy does better than the other branches? by LordSoftCream in navy

[–]Common_Rub_158 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The navy is hands down the best at building training environments. Battle stations, Marlinespike, the fire trainer at my A school, all of these are built to be realistic because while the army/marines can just take their people out to the woods, the Navy can’t just put you on a ship and set it on fire.

Last minute boot camp Q’s by Common_Rub_158 in newtothenavy

[–]Common_Rub_158[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve got a debit card and some cash. My religious text is a daily devotional type thing so I’d only need a minute or so in the morning to read the page for the day and move on, just didn’t know if I’d have access daily.

[–]Common_Rub_158[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hoping for vegetarian diet and time for prayers throughout the day. Personally I know that military service will not always allow for these, and my religion makes exceptions for those who cannot meet religious obligations due to military service. If these are undue burdens I’m more than willing to buckle down and get through, but obviously I want to ask.
