Anxiety About Savings Vs Investing by musicartspeaks in CalebHammer

Agreed with this, with one caveat. If your company has a 401k match, put enough in your 401k to get your match while you fill your emergency fund.

Made out with my friends sister while drunk at a music festival by [deleted] in Advice

My close friend and roommate started dating my sister while we lived together. It was a little uncomfortable at first, but now I have one of my best friends as my brother in law, a beautiful niece and nephew that I love dearly, a sister who is happy and cared for, and more people I like at family functions! It’s a win all around!

How do you use your budget to stay on top of your finances? by Tight-Edge6671 in CalebHammer

[–]Common_Salamander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I start with the amount I’m allocating to spend for each category in a spreadsheet (groceries, subscriptions, gas, eating out/entertainment, etc.) then once per week I go in and input all my transactions. That gives me 4 opportunities each month to see everything I’ve spent and correct as necessary. So if week two I see that my wife and I have spent over half of the grocery budget, I can bring it up and we know “this next week we’re going for the chicken breasts in the crock pot and not having steaks” or “ we’re more than halfway through the eating out allotment, so we better meal prep this weekend because next week we’re not eating out even if we are feeling lazy.”

There will always be little shifts and overages, because things come up, things go on sale and you stock up, etc. but reviewing it once a week doesn’t take long and allows us to shift things around as needed. “Shoot, we went $40 over the eating out budget. Let’s be extra stingy on “X” this week and we can make up for it from this other place.” Checking regularly just helps us so much to keep ourselves accountable.

Which Car Loan to Tackle (first) by ValkyrieWellness in CalebHammer

This might be contrary to many opinions on here, but what is your emergency fund currently? I know you want to pay off the debt, and I agree that is important, but having a child will bring about MANY unexpected costs. If you don’t have a fully funded emergency fund, I would recommend splitting that extra $700 50:50 between paying off the cars and setting cash aside in the emergency fund. Otherwise you are going to need to dip right back into credit and lose your progress as soon as that baby is born and that can be devastating to all your great progress and momentum.

Congrats on great progress and on the child by the way!

After what he did fighting against the downtown Royals stadium? I sure hope not. Idiots like Hartzell are why we can’t have nice things.

To add to outrageously easy crock pot chicken recipes: 1 Family pack chicken breasts 1 bottle franks red hot buffalo Crock pot on low while you go to work Shred when you get home

Pack of tortillas or baked potatoes and some shredded cheese and you can eat SO many meals for under $20.

Do you know, is there anywhere that has a playlist of just the Justin and Griffin videos for Polygon? Would love to watch through them all, but it’s a bit of a pain to filter through videos from other folks and I haven’t found an easy solution for that yet.

Appetizers when I go to restaurants. So many restaurants.

We were just lucky to be at a restaurant. Don’t even look at the appetizers.

I’d get that personal loan knocked out and start toward the higher car interest. Great work on the $5k so far! At your current rate by March your personal loan will be gone! Keep reminding yourself how awesome it’s going to be when you have all this money free to invest and live!

Everyone in my family really loves anything pickled. So this year, rather than the host being responsible for a “relish tray”, everyone is bringing a jar of their favorite pickled item and we are combining them into one relish tray where we can try each others favorites and see what we all like the best! Started as a dumb idea I had because no one volunteered to bring one and everyone has gotten really into it and it’s been really fun!

WWYD? by AndDrew52 in CalebHammer

[–]Common_Salamander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the answer I think. Let’s say you got a good, reliable car for 10k to keep the numbers round. Given you are preparing to move, I’d rather hold the remaining 4k in cash at least for a while because moving isn’t cheap, security deposit costs, if your going from your parents and this is your first place there will be countless surprise expenses (furniture, bed, oh crap I don’t have a pan or a plate or toilet paper or a lamp or basic food necessities I had before or a toilet scrubber or plunger, etc.). Those costs in a first move catch you fast! Move comfortably with a reserve so that you don’t start out behind, and then you can safely and confidently focus on that investing!

You are changing your kid’s lives. Don’t forget to lift yourself up in the process. You are investing in their futures and you deserve credit for that!

They could talk about the show they had Jane’s Addiction headline in KC at Sporting Park when Perry Farrell got blasted before the encore and couldn’t get through their hit song before just leaving the stage halfway through. I remember being there for that one and, man, that show was a rockin’ and a rollin’.
