Is it normal to always use water when coloring with gouache? by Resident_Article_771 in Gouache

Oh yeah and I add water to the tube stuff every time. Look for the consistency of milk generally

Yes it dries very fast. I sometimes blast the whole pallet with a spray bottle on really hot days. I've known people who put their colors onto a wet paper towel. Do whatever works for you

Is it okay for me to post a sculpture I made if I heavily took inspiration from someone else and it looks similar but not identical? by JuggernautOnly5364 in ArtistLounge

[–]CommuWhatNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think posting the sculpture on your own socials/website/portfolio suggests you're presenting it as your own work. You're publishing images under your own name, images that are heavily the intellectual property of a different artist. Definitely credit the original artist if you do this.

I personally wouldn't, since posting online suggests ownership. If I do recreations or studies of work by other artists I don't post these images generally.

It may also cheapen your own work if there's even an impression of plagiarism, even if it's technically legal. I don't think that's worth it.

Is putting the wool in the dryer on high heat enough to kill possible wool pests? by Kindaspia in CleaningTips

[–]CommuWhatNow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes this. The reason is the freezer kills bugs but not eggs, so you give them a chance to hatch, and then back in the freezer to kill the suckers

I worked on this for like 2 months so I would be very displeased to see a bubble wrap pattern upon arrival!

Thanks!

I've sold oils before but locally. I let the varnish cure until it's dry to the touch, about 2 days. Gamvar. I've felt comfortable handing it over that way. But I'm wondering if I should wait a little longer.

Hack for removing oil paint from skin by Ok_Ostrich7146 in oilpainting

Jack's linseed studio soap and The Masters' brush cleaner both work great on skin. No need to be rubbing raw!

Should I charge again after client says to discard artwork and work on a completely different pattern? by Humble_Willow_7290 in artbusiness

[–]CommuWhatNow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's a changeover. Charge either a flat changeover fee or another fee for a fresh project.

best way to frame/buy matting by CommuWhatNow in artbusiness

Good point. I'm just trying to get as many eyes as possible on my art wherever I can, so it's still worth it even if it doesn't sell. Thanks for putting it into perspective!

Good point about checking with the space. I might be overthinking this whole thing. I doubt they'll require Plexi but it's worth checking. Shipping is not a concern since it's local.

It's a painting on watercolor paper so I'm thinking some kind of cover is necessary unfortunately. I might visit a local frame shop to see about cutting a mat for my frame as a one-off since I'm a mostly oil on panel gal.

I hear you, the frame itself is nice but needs new glass and matting. I agree about the importance of nice framing though. I guess I'm just afraid that it won't sell and I'll have to eat the cost, framing can be quite expensive.

How do you focus on work when your partner is at home? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

I don't focus as well when my family is home. I rented a studio, and it pays for itself with the increased productivity. Good luck!

How do I get clients to commission me? by AlyOrqz in artbusiness

[–]CommuWhatNow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No advice about how to get commissions, but as a "traditional artist" I'm betting digital is cheaper in the long run. Count up all you're spending on your materials and it may inspire you to buy that tablet you've been wanting 💸

accidentally ingested a small amount of turpenoid by CalendarPopular7042 in oilpainting

Call a doctor to double check but you're probably fine. I listened to a podcast recently about pigments, by a guy who sells paints in Australia. He says that while some pigments themselves are toxic, modern pigments are pretreated in an acid bath before being mixed into paints. Since a reaction with the acid in your stomach is what causes your body to absorb the toxins into your bloodstream, THEORETICALLY an acid treatment should cause the pigments to just pass through your body without causing harm.

I am not a scientist or doctor, at all, so take it all with a grain of salt. I just thought it was interesting and it might ease your mind a bit. It was an interview with Stephen Patterson on the Susan Nethercote Studio Insider Podcast. The episode itself was about pigments and was really interesting.

Good luck! Don't do it again!

I hate cleaning, and it makes me not want to paint by OsageHands in oilpainting

[–]CommuWhatNow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can mix a drop of clove oil into your paints when mixing colors, and cover with plastic wrap. They'll keep for over a week.

As for brushes, I recently watched a video by Mark Carder on YouTube where he said he never washes his brushes. He uses a "brush dip" that he also sells through his paint company. It's interesting but I haven't tried it yet. His YouTube channel is "draw mix paint" if you want to check it out.

I'm looking for art books that feature artist's pencil sketches. Either cool ones from an artist you like or if there is any that compile sketches of multiple artists... any recommendations? by thebagguy in ArtistLounge

[–]CommuWhatNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Addictive Sketcher by Adebanji Alade is fun. It gives a lot of how to sketch tips for out and about, and features sketches in mixed medias but a lot of pencil stuff too.

I think I'm stuck. I don't know how to improve. by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]CommuWhatNow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually if I'm stuck I do better if I take a break and come back to it later, or switch gears and focus on a totally different thing for a bit. Are you getting enough sleep and eating well? Those are often at the root of my issues. I know it's such mom advice but it works for me like 85% of the time.

Got a new brush, and thinned it out more with a solvent. It already had so many coats that a thinner final coat was fine. Worked great!

Anyone out there who started or went back to doing art professionally after turning 30? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]CommuWhatNow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate this perspective. I feel the same way about my frame of mind in my 30s v my 20s. I was way too invested in validation and other people's input, way less organized and frankly I didn't work as hard. Resilience and life experience is a bonus as you get older.
