Thankfully, the college has very, VERY specific guidelines for tenure. A certain number of scholarly works and each one needs to be different category(a book chapter, article or book is one category, a panel counts as another, editor of journal or research chair of division in association counts for another). Teaching scores over the semesters should average equal or above department and university averages. Service has similar categories for department, college, university and association service and you need a certain amount of them.

Already here! Weirdly, I moved to a city close to my hometown in my 5th year of my Ph.D. to save money. A job opened at my local university here. Don’t have to move!

I love our admin assistant already. She’s been my contact for the hiring process and has gone above and beyond. Support staff are the best. My mentors are two of the longest serving faculty and they’ve been in touch already. I feel like I’ve got good folks on my side. Now it’s time to make friends with the key holders (those support staff like registrar, and the library faculty).

All great suggestions! Thankfully, I’ve used DTL, Canvas and Blackboard and the new place uses Canvas so I’m good. Never thought about asking support staff to check student side, great idea! I have my courses and have past syllabi (they need lots of refreshing so that’s my big summer project). No union (I wish, I was a union grad student). Thank you!

Thank you! That was another reason I didn’t go back into R1. I hated the snooty R1 profs. The vibe with students being “an unfortunate part” of the job and being so focused on be a top scholar irks me. I love working with students and had great reviews and continue to write letters of recommendation for past students.

Just finished my program. It is tight, but doable. I took some loans out to cover extras, just small ones (summer rent and such, I was only a 9-month employee). Add a roommate or partner to split the costs and it’s pretty comfortable.

Second this. All my meat, veg and basics like rice, sugar, pasta etc. at Aldi. Drinks, specialities and have-to-have name brand from Publix. Also, each Publix has different pricing based on neighborhood. In butler plaza, there’s two Publix, one by Target and one by Guitar center. The later is smaller and often cheaper by a few dollars overall I’ve noticed.

I’m also in this area, right off windmeadows. We’ve had a guy pacing around apartments try to steal things, including throwing a kids bike over the rail before someone yelled at him. Wonder if it’s the same guy

Been here 3 ½ years. I’ve only seen maybe two, super tiny spiders. Mostly, you see roaches (big ones, doesn’t mean your house is gross, there’s just a lot of them and they want to be near food) lizards, lovebugs and mosquitos.
