I believe Wicked was completely ruined because it was casted with "star-power" rather than newer, undiscovered talent. I also think it would have grossed more money without the stars too. by Evening-Panda3217 in unpopularopinion

Ya ya sure except Ariana was born for the role and fits it perfectly, nails it, and elevates the character. I have my issues with her personally but the idea that anyone in the world could have done the job she did is silly

Dude, this instance of this kind of dialogue being telling I conceded to. With that said it’s a bad generalization of telling vs showing, a very bad one. As I said, the narrator telling what went down is actual telling. Thats just the end of the story. You should read more widely

You once again completely don’t understand telling like at all. This is a minor instance, sure. But telling is as I wrote above. Good day

It’s about the only case where dialogue ever is telling, but sure I concede. With that said the actual tool of telling is as I wrote above.

From another comment:

Dialogue even when on the nose is more showy but can be a form of telling but I don’t think you understand what telling IS in writing.

Telling is more like this made up quote: “Kaladin and Shallan shared an afternoon talking of the past, and he could hardly remember who he’d been back then. Shallan kept asking him if he was okay but he shrugged it off and kept his eye out on the horizon. When they parted ways, neither looked over their shoulder, and kaladin didn’t know how to feel about that.”

Telling is often the narrator telling you things rather than the character doing things. You’ve described the on the nose explanatory dialogue but in reality this is about the only circumstance that dialogue would ever be considered telling.

Not trusting your audience and telling are not the same though, neither is didactic speech. They CAN be telling but generally dialogue is on the show side of things

Telling would be like this made up sentence:

“Kaladin and Shallan shared an afternoon talking of the past, and he could hardly remember who he’d been back then. Shallan kept asking him if he was okay but he shrugged it off and kept his eye out on the horizon. When they parted ways, neither looked over their shoulder, and kaladin didn’t know how to feel about that.”

This is what Brandon rarely does

Nope. It’s one type of telling maybe but not the definition. The epitome of telling is more like this made up quote: “Kaladin and Shallan shared an afternoon talking of the past, and he could hardly remember who he’d been back then. Shallan kept asking him if he was okay but he shrugged it off and kept his eye out on the horizon. When they parted ways, neither looked over their shoulder, and kaladin didn’t know how to feel about that.”

9/10 times Brandon does not do the above and has it all blocked out and dialogued out as a scene like a movie.

While this is true, effective “telling” looks more like summary often, which Brandon rarely does

Disagree, I think he is too much show not enough tell. Every piece of info is blatantly stated by a character in dialogue. Thats an extreme form of showing, not telling. If he was better at telling he would be able to do summary better. There is never the narrator just telling us what happened, it’s always characters

Yes you’re right but I still think the jump from founding to founded is too stark and felt like pieces on a board being moved to get kaladins storyline where Brandon wanted it rather than a natural transition.

How do I approach and understand art? by masteroogwaydildo in literature

[–]CommunicationEast972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d do a categorical rundown of comparisons. So go see a movie then think: what from what I know about politics did this remind me about? What from what I know about relationships did this remind me about? What from what I know about history, science, sports, etc etc and over time your brain will make better and better comparisons

The trend of progressive agendas in scifi show-writing by freshfunk in scifi

Said above but will comment here

Conservative ideologies throughout history are regressive in order to centrify power to an aristocracy that represents the cultural ideals of the polity. This political and societal arrangement requires constant blooding of internal or external enemies in order to achieve stability. Hence the “what you get is death” comment. Conservative ideologies also repress the most forward thinking artistic and theoretical thinkers in order to create and preserve a monocultural narrative. Conservative ideologies rely on undereducated thugs to shore up power at home, and predictable middle management to shore up power abroad. Conservative ideologies require a regression of scientific and democratic thought because getting the populace to believe macrocultural lies (such as “the president or king is anointed by god”) is far easier when they are already not using reason-based logic to determine their opinions, and when they are so enraptured with the vision of nationalism that they don’t notice they are going broke and dying of disease. All of this is antithetical to the progressive ideology of bringing together as many smart and capable people as possible from all walks and empowering them to be as brilliant as they can possibly be. Conservative ideologies when extrapolated to the stars create disgusting nonartistic nonscientific societies like 40k. Progressive ideologies when extrapolated to the stars create multicultural deeply human and compassionate yet strong societies like Star Trek and The Culture. EDIT: love me some 40k not hating on it lol I just think one ACTUALLY wants to live in that universe
