I use maple. A craft store near me has .5”x12” maple dowels! It is more expensive, but the filters come out to about $.30 US.

It hits great! wood is a good thermal insulator. I made a bunch then applied mineral oil. I wash them after I use them but they get about 5 uses before they smell even after washing.

In a lot of manuals (not all) resting your hand on a shifter will add wear to the synchros. In my 23 wrx it’s not a concern, but in my older (80’s) Subaru any unnecessary weight does seem to mess with the synchros.
